With the release of his latest collection, Not for Love (EP), award-winning acoustic songwriter Dan Charness emerges as one of New York City’s most promising singer-songwriters. The EP features six original songs and showcases Charness’s McCartney-esque versatility as both a songwriter and performer. He moves effortlessly from soothing folk to driving rock–all within the confines of the American songwriting tradition. As Charness insists, “I refuse to be confined to one style or genre. I grew up listening to a wide range of music, so the variety of styles in Not for Love is really just an honest expression of that range of influences.” Despite its stylistic breadth, Not for Love is unified by the consistently brilliant craftsmanship of Charness’s songs.
The EP, including it’s single, “Insomnia,” was brought to life with prodigious skill by New York City producer Dominic Fallacaro. - American Songwriting Magazine

In his sophomore EP, Forever in my Song, Dan Charness takes another giant musical leap forward. Teamed again with New York City producer, Dominic Fallacaro, Charness once again demonstrates his agility as a songwriter, delivering six exhilarating new tracks that span a range of the singer-songwriter genre. From the anthemic celebration of Ill Be Back to the absurdist, vaudevillian Devil and His Due Regard, Charness proves once again why he is considered one of the most exciting new artists to emerge from New York Citys revered songwriting scene.
Charnesss journey as a singer-songwriter has been long in the making. Trained from a young age as a classical cellist, Charness swiftly changed tracks in 2004, when he discovered both the guitar and his natural, versatile inclination for songwriting. Charness soon began performing his works throughout New England, releasing a debut album, All Over the Map (2006) and a follow-up EP, One Night Stand (2008), both of which were self-produced and met with acclaim. They also featured Dan as a multi-instrumentalist, performing nearly every instrumental and vocal track.
In the summer of 2010, having graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in history from Wesleyan University, Charness relocated to New York City and began recording a new album, promoting his work with regular performances at well-known city venues such as The Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall, and Caffe Vivaldi. His debut commercial release, Brand New Day (2010), met with acclaim from fans and industry professionals alike, and its single, Summertime Delight, took first place in the folk category of the Indie International Song Contest. The album was entirely self-produceddrawing praise for its sweeping instrumental arrangementsand garnered interest due to its wide breadth of material, a range of influences that drew from folk-rock to gospel.
In April of 2012, Charness released Not For Love, an EP of six songs that showcased the full range of his craft. Not for Love garnered praise, particularly for its single, Insomnia, which was lauded in American Songwriting Magazine. Charness can be found regularly on tour throughout the Northeast, and has performed for audiences across the United States and Canada, appearing at legendary venues such as Rockwood Music Hall (New York, NY) The Iron Horse (Northampton, MA), Room 5 (Los Angeles), The Free Times Cafe (Toronto, ON), and festivals such as the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and the Cape May Singer Songwriter Festival.
