"Curry & Coco at Yugongyishan"

Curry & Coco, an inseparable pair since childhood, began making music since 2006 from their hometown of Lille in Northern France, where they are commonly referred to looking like "Croatian tennis players circa 1973." Music-wise, they're reviving the post-punk wave circa late 1970s with the introduction of slaying synths and grinding beats. What do they sound like? With influences from The Human League, Joy Division and The Droids, they are the anti-heroes of French electronic music, running head-first against the wave of the 'popular' sounds we commonly attribute to that region.
They bring what we don't know we crave, real authentic gritty music, a backlash against the almost boring perfection of modern music production. With Pliem on the drums and Przybylski on vintage analogue synthesizers + vocals, they bring along with them an array of old-school aural ammunition. Imagine disco infused with new-wave flavours of electronic pop, a whole lotta kitsch and even more fun to hear. - www.songkick.com

"Album review (FR)"

Du surexcité Who’s Next?

"Weekend Live Music Roundup: Metal & Punk, Curry & Coco, Air & Style"

I know it's getting freezing outside, but we don't have time to let the coldness hold us back. beside the local acts, brave westerners are coming to town to warm up the party season. French duo Curry & Coco suggest peopel to wear nothing at their gig (see our interview with them in the magazine). Get ready to dance hard if you are really going to do so tomorrow night. Yugong Yishan's heating is strong, but probably not that strong. - The Beijinger (China)

"Sex Is Fashion - EP review - Germany"

- http://www.bumbanet.de

"Curry & Coco - Live in Paris"

Fascinating mix of outstanding pop and severe krautrock, the two brothers celebrate the spousal of Kraftwerk and the Jackson 5 in a sonic orgy. (...)
Together they are the B52's of the 21st century dressed as croatian tennismen from 1975.
They cover Girls Want to have fun from Cindy Lauper to bear in mind their fidelity to MTV's pop music. - Les Inrocks.com

"Sex Is Fashion - EP review"

Finally an official single from the machine that kills the dance floors in the North's venues.

For several years, Curry & Coco mistreated the French and European music scenes everywhere where there is a Burger King, spoiled alcohol and unstable electricity.
One can therefore already give them a medal of honor for having put up a strong show in the face of this poor lot, which condemned them to false starts and wrong paths. But that would be a small posthumanous metal for a band so strong, so exciting, so relentless that you should wipe the slate clean and see the first official release as though it is a new beginning.
Not a wrinkle, not a tarnish, not a drop of rancor in these men from the North, who are among the best in class in France. The same young energy, the same incredible spirit, illuminates this single, produced with love - it's faithful to the devastating energy of this band live - by the Brit David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Faultline,...). Picture the performance: one playing the vintage synthesizer, the other on exorbitant percussion, the natural territory of these beasts; one on the ice flow, the other on the hot blaze, they play ping-pong between Daft Punk and the Jackson 5, robotic rock and MTV pop.
Without that image - which is hilarious and incredible - does their music ring true, like the Autobahn did for Kraftwerk? Certainly yes, my captain, do they respond in a hysterical chorus to SEX IS FASHION and the hymn WHO'S NEXT, which dares to again ask who's turn is it? The immediate response would be "It's our turn, and if you disagree with it then get off the bus."

Newest release SEX IS FASHION is an EP that proves this outfits prowess at creating memorable pop hooks amidst the chaos, the title track here a day glo collision of influences and sounds ranging all the way from Giorgio Moroder to Franz Ferdinand to Donna Summer and back again, throbbing synth, programmed beats, infectious choruses and disco samples all present and correct. - http://www.ukmusicreview.co.uk/

"Curry & Coco - Live in Taiwan (December 2010)"

“Sex is fashion, so let’s get trendy,” goes a line from a 1980s-sounding song by Curry and Coco.
The French electro-rock duo performs at The Wall in Taipei on Wednesday, along with local indie favorites DJ Spykee Fat and electronica group KbN.
In addition to their synth-pop/punk sound, Curry and Coco will be bringing plenty of ambition, judging from tracks like Who’s Next, in whose chorus the band hollers “Who’s next? We say us!”
Then there are the catchy hooks and anthemic choruses such as “we’re the top of the pop,” which make the duo sound like they’re hungry for genuine stardom in spite of their hipster looks (scruffy beards and messy hair) and tongue-in-cheek attitude.
“Totally, but we always want to keep laughing about us,” singer and keyboardist Sylvain Przybylski wrote in an e-mail interview with the Taipei Times.
“International ambition” is also why they sing exclusively in English, said the 26-year-old, who hails from northern France and formed the group four years ago with drummer and backing singer Thomas Priem.

Disco, new wave and post-punk are a big part of the duo’s sound on its debut album We Are Beauty .
“We wanted to mix those two energies together, disco sensuality and punk rawness,” wrote Priem, 29, who balances the duo’s synth melodies with intense rock drumming. He plays a full drum kit, and makes the band seem like an electronica version of The White Stripes.
Przybylski says their other influences include AC/DC, Blondie, Gang of Four, Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Bukowski and Cindy Lauper.
Priem and Przybylski are friends from childhood, tease each other like brothers in interviews and play up their close connection in their album art and videos as well as on stage. As for the band’s name, Przybylski says they haven’t yet decided who’s Curry and who’s Coco.
But one thing’s certain: the duo is out to have a lot of fun. When asked what their audience in Taipei can expect on Wednesday, Przybylski wrote, “[To] get physical!!”

"Friday 21/05/10 Liverpool Sound City - Day Two @ Various Venues, Liverpool"

What a funny sight unfolds in Sylvain Przybylski on his double synthesiser set-up and Thomas Priem bashing his drums to death. With song-titles including ‘Top of the Pop’, ‘Sex is Fashion’ and ‘Who’s Next’, they bring an amount of unreserved eccentricity that is tucked away from the headline hype. - http://www.gigwise.com/

Curry and Coco are Thomas Piem and Sylvian Przbylski, thick rimmed glasses, quiffy hair and a core of pop passion running through their veins.

Bio

CURRY & COCO are 2 guys face to face on stage, one keyboard player and one drummer, doing an original mix of disco, new wave and pop performed with the raw energy of punk rock.

More than 200 concerts, a reputation of hedonist performers able to burn out a dance floor without the help of any machine or sampler.

DEBUT ALBUM PRODUCED BY DAVID KOSTEN (Bat For Lashes, Chew Lips, Everything Everything,...) RELEASED APRIL 2010.

CURRY & COCO BIOGRAPHY (by Robert Sandall).

Remember the time in the late 1970's when punks traded in their guitars for synths, and re-configured disco as a bastard brother of garage rock? Well you should, especially if you weren't around for it. And here, now, to recreate the raw excitement and sonic abandon of post-punk's wildest hour are Thomas Priem and Sylvain Przybylski, the duo known as Curry and Coco.

C&C began playing together in 2006 in their hometown of Lille in Northern France. Close friends from early childhood, they acquired their joint nickname, Curry and Coco, from a Thai au pair who looked after them both. Their symbiotic relationship and engagingly untidy appearance - once compared in the French media to that of "Croatian tennis players circa 1973" - have always intrigued onlookers. Suffice to say that an intuitive bond was in place long before they decided to express it in music. "We are like brothers, and yet not", Pliem observes, enigmatically.

Bored by the processed perfection of most modern recordings, they found an echo of the authenticity they craved in the music that flourished, briefly, in the years before they were born. "This was a time, 1978 actually, when it felt like everything was happening", says Przybylski. "There were no rules. We fell in love with Devo, The Human League, the first Joy Division album. The electro rhythms of Giorgio Moroder were a great influence on us. The electronic groups like Cabaret Voltaire were changing the vocabulary of rock, and even the guitar bands like Gang Of Four were doing things differently". Aside from the inspirational example of the French synthesiser band The Droids - a theatrical post-punk trio from the 70's, known only in France - C&C are not big on the recent efforts of fellow countrymen like Daft Punk and Justice. "We're not keen on French stuff. Too many samples, too much fashionable posing."

Their commitment to doing things differently is obvious for all to hear, and it is fiercely, ideologically old-school. C&C use no samples, sequencers or backing tapes. Priem plays live drums, while Przybylski employs only vintage analogue synthesisers - when he isn't punching the air and belting out vocals. "I think today people need to hear the truth," says Przybylski. "Our aim is to make something true, even if we sometimes make mistakes, and not something that was made up by a computer. Everything with us begins in our dark and dirty basement in Lille. In this way we think of ourselves as more like a rock and roll band, although we call our music 'pop de danse'."

C&C are passionate about live performance and have played over 100 gigs, mainly in French clubs, in the past 2 years. According to Priem: "We like to play very loud, and our audience like to wave their arms and sing." In response to their popularity with female fans they regularly perform a roughed-up version of the Cyndi Lauper classic, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. "It's meant for a laugh." Critical reactions to their shows have been ecstatic, bordering on hysterical. The editor of the leading French culture mag Les Inrockuptibles, Jean Daniel Beauvallet, compared a C&C live show to "Kraftwerk and the Jackson Five having sex in the gymnasium of an Ivy League university." In another review Beauvallet likened them to "a blitzkrieg on the dancefloor : two of them, but the noise of the B-52's bombarding Daft Punk."

In 2010 Curry and Coco are at last ready to make their debut as recording artists. Working with producer David Kosten (Faultline, Bat For Lashes) they patiently constructed a studio sound that captures the riotous energy of their concerts. An ep, Sex Is Fashion - date tbc - will be followed by the album We Are Beauty in ? When it comes to singles, C&C are spoilt for choice. Do they go with the tumultuous anthem Who's Next, or play it safer with Top Of The Pop, or the gloriously catchy - and funny - Dancing Like A Monkey?

The truth is that every one of the tracks on We Are Beauty sounds like a potential hit - and a vital antidote to the formulaic pop-by-numbers that now clogs the charts and the airwaves. "We have international ambitions," says Przybylski. "It may sound proud to say but we are here to do great things. We Are Beauty means that we want to make people gather together for a great experience."
