Soulful. R&B crooner Lavel, 21, performed to a packed crowd at Zabumba club in L.A. on Tuesday night.

A standing-room-only crowd at Zabumba, a West Los Angeles nightclub, was treated Tuesday night to a strong debut performance from emerging R&B performer Cory Lavel.

The 21-year-old crooner, who hails from Paramount, Calif., sang five songs, four of which were from his soon-to-be-released debut album Like This.

And the crowd was with him every single step of the way, from his rendition of R&B star Sisq?'s ballad "Incomplete," to his very snappy club-friendly joint "Ladies," an ode to all of the women who frequent clubs.

Lavel, whose real name is Cory Lavel Lewis, is the debut artist of Lewis Entertainment, an independent record label in Los Angeles that is expecting big things from Lavel in the near future.

"We're very excited with Cory's debut tonight," said Christopher Scott, strategic planner for Lewis Entertainment. "He's about to be a big star, and tonight is the night that it all begins for him."

Lavel was the headline performer in a weekly hip-hop talent showcase at Zabumba and he immediately gave the crowd what they came to hear, literally saving the crowd from a lackluster performance from veteran Los Angeles underground group Dynamite Jive.

Singing behind a live band, Lewis went into two ballads off of his album. The highlight performance was a song titled "Woman," in which he expressed love for all the women who put up with men despite their many trespasses.

Scott said that singing with a live band gave the label a sense of what was to come with Lavel.

"We wanted to have him sing with a band, because anyone can get up and sing to prerecorded tracks, so we wanted to see how he sounds away from that element," Scott said. "He impressed everyone tonight, especially seeing this was his first time."

Despite the fact that his lyrical content was limited to the ladies, Lavel performed like an old pro, wooing the women in the front rows as he serenaded them with his voice, which compares favorably to Usher's or the aforementioned Sisq?'s.

"I love Sisq?'s music and his stage presence, and if anyone compares me to him or any R&B musician, I see that as nothing but a compliment," Lavel said. "I'm a big fan of all really good R&B singers."

CoryLavel performed at BB Kings Universal City Walk, an event which would became the third highest grossing act of 2005 at that location. CoryLavel has also performed at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica, The Gig in Hollywood, House of Blues Sunset Strip and numerous other venues in the Los Angeles area. With a strong live band backing his vocals, CoryLavel took every show by storm with over 300 attendees and new fans at each appearance.

CoryLavel received a songwriting award for outstanding achievement from Motown Legend, Lamont Dozier. Mr. Dozier complimented CoryLavel by saying, “The kids got a great voice. I don’t see how he wouldn’t be successful and crush the competition in the R&B market.” CoryLavel has been honored with an award for the best independent R&B album of the year by the L.A. Music Awards as well as being placed as a finalist in an International Songwriting Competition.

An in-studio radio interview in 2005 with Steve Harvey of the Steve Harvey morning show on 100.3 The Beat, in Los Angeles would catapult CoryLavel into the spotlight. With the initial spin of his first single “Woman” on the show, and through positive and continued caller support, the single received moderate airplay success in one of the nation’s largest radio markets.

CoryLavel would like to work with a diverse range of artists including Jay-Z, Dr. Dre., The Neptunes, Prince, Emenim, R.Kelly, Kanye West, and Ludacris just to name a few.
