One of the main advantages of the Finnish metal scene -apart from the fact that it includes a variety of bands covering most sub-genres of metal – is that every once and a while a new band pops up from the underground offering fresh blood to the whole scene.

COLLARBONE is such an example of band. After winning the “Sound & Fury” battle of bands, these young rockers were grabbed by Ranch (a sub-label of Spinefarm Records) and were given the opportunity of a worldwide career. After all, the band’s music can give them such a career. COLLARBONE are playing modern alternative rock, not far from what mainstream groups of today’s American (mostly) and English scene are playing. Melodic refrains, distorted chords, performances full of energy are the band’s main characteristic. In other words, whatever a band needs to become successful.

This debut album, entitled “The Back Of Beyond” is a promising record. The band mixes its alternative rock with some metal and punk elements, making its music enjoyable enough. I not sure if metal fans will find it interesting but those fans who are more into the mainstream rock scene will enjoy certain songs: “The last call” with its very good melody and the dual guitar harmony, “Up North” with its melodic refrain, “Nightlight”, “Wither”.

What should be given an extra attention is the drummer’s energetic performance who seems to gives the whole band an extra power, as well as the very good work that has been made on guitars.

All in all, the future can be quite generous with these young musicians. They have the skills to do even better than this good debut.

Finnland spuckt mal wieder eine neue Band auf den Markt. COLLARBONE nennen sich die vier Jungs und starten gleich mal voll los auf dem Weg Richtung Gipfel des Heavy Metal. Zumindest dem Anschein nach. Als Gewinner von Finnlands bekanntestem Battle of the Bands „Aani & Viima“ sind sie dort schon längst kein unbeschriebenes Blatt mehr und haben so einen Fuß in die Türe von Spinefarm und damit in die der internationalen Musikwelt bekommen. Sozusagen von Null auf 100 in ein paar Monaten. Und ich muss sagen, nach dieser Einleitung bekommt man auf „The back of Beyond“ auch genau das wonach die obigen Zeilen klingen: recht massentaugliche, nette, etwas zurechtgebogene und aufpolierte Rockmusik. Womit ich mal wieder bei Geschmackssache wäre.
Alles in allem ist das nur 36 Minuten lange Album wirklich ganz nett und geht recht gut ins Ohr, nur von einem Brüller würde ich hier wirklich nicht reden. Elf Songs in radiotauglichen Ausmaßen haben COLLARBONE auf ihr Debüt gepackt und diese Lieder klingen durchwegs alle sehr frisch, sehr modern aber leider auch ein wenig… nichtssagend. Da können auch die astreine Produktion und der klare Sound nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen. Relativ gekonnt wird hier zwar das HIM-Loch in das so manche finnische Band nur zu gerne fällt, umgangen, aber das gewisse Etwas fehlt einfach. Statt dessen pendelt die Combo aus Helsinki zwischen Rock, Indie, Alternative und was eben diese musikalische Ecke noch so alles hergibt, stellenweise verpasst mit ein paar härteren Gitarrenriffs und ein wenig, aber auch nur ein wenig, Gebrüll zwischen den mitsingtauglichen massengängigen Refrains („Clearance“), die aber mit der Zeit doch ein wenig auf den Keks gehen. Diese Mischung rockt zwar ganz nett, wirkt aber etwas unkoordiniert und wenig nachhaltig. Und leider auch wenig individuell, ähnliches kann man auf jedem beliebigen Rockradiosender hören. Daher meine Probehör-Empfehlung für „The Back of Beyond“.
Als Zielgruppe würde ich hier jetzt mal ganz unverbindlich den Rocknachwuchs von 12 bis 16 vermuten. Und wohl vorwiegend weiblich. Die Frage ist nur wie viele der Leser hier in dieses Schema passen. :)
Wie dem auch sei, das abschließende Fazit fällt diesmal sehr gemischt aus: einerseits haben COLLARBONE durchaus Potential und haben ein, nun, ich würde sagen solides Debüt hingelegt, aber ob da noch wirklich Großes zu erwarten ist – na, ich weiß nicht so recht. Bleibt abzuwarten.

Ranch / Spinefarm gehören zu den Labeln, bei denen man recht sicher sein kann, dass man keine langweilige Durchschnittsware angeboten bekommt, die man schon milliardenmal gehört hat. Auch mit der Band Collarbone, die mit "The back of beyond" ihr Debütalbum veröffentlichen, bestätigt sich diese Regel ein weiteres mal. Metallerohren fällt es zunächst etwas schwer, sich an die sehr alternative Gangart Collarbones zu gewöhnen, doch ist die Einhörphase erstmal überstanden bekommt man ehrlichen, guten Rock geboten. Das fängt beim ohrwurmigen Opener "Seafarer's Song" an und hört eigentlich erst am Ende des Albums wieder auf. Das ein oder andere schwächere Stück ist dabei, klar, und an einer songschreiberischen Qualität, wie sie beispielsweise My Chemical Romance aufweisen können, ist man auch noch nicht ganz dran, aber als Debüt ist "The back of beyond" absolut hörenswert. Dazu trägt unter anderem bei, dass Sänger Thomas Kirjonen (vor allem gegen Ende der Scheibe) oftmals in dem Metalcore zuzuordnenden Schreigesang verfällt, was dem Ganzen noch eine Extraportion Schmackes verleiht. Fazit: Daumen hoch!

When I was passed a copy of this album being told this would be my sort of music and to write a review, I looked a little into the band to find on the basics. Low and behold, they are from good old rock country Finland. Just when you think that Finland have no more music to offer and all the good bands are fading and drying up. They have done it yet again. How come any person in Finland who wields a guitar is instantly a God? We may never know. Maybe it’s something in the water. So with great anticipation I listened to the album, only to find yet another great band that can get me hooked after only thirty seconds. Defiantly my sort of music.
With a Metal sound Like Bullet For My Valentine/Hawthorne Heights mixed with the vocal styles of The Used you can tell that this is a band with a passion for bring together 2 different types of music. Mainly Metalcore and Rock and turning it into something new. The album itself is basically good heavy metal music without the shouting from the lead singer, Unlike bands like Trivium, Lordi (Yet again, Finland...) and Napalm Death, who really aren’t that bad, There are worse. This new breed is slowly taking over with a large cult following online due to bootlegs of the bands album being leaked and sold on imports to around the continent.
Not since my old Queen days has an album stuck in my head more than this. The opening riff is in instant air guitar for me and If I hear it the once. I'm humming along in my head all day, and sometimes even attempting to sing along even though the lyrics are not clear in all places. Like other bands of Finland, like Children of Bodom, HIM, The Rasmus and Nightwish. Collarbone are sure to do well. Not really the music for era of Metalheads who grew up with the likes of Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC, much more for the era of My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy and Paramore really.
The album seems keeps a similar theme most of the way through. Most people would call it linear or 'one long song', much like bands such as Dragonforce and early Greenday. But to me it just stays with the basics of music... Nothing complicated or going off the walls with insane length songs and solo's. Just music and lyrics. All that’s needed really. And they do a damn good job at it too. If you are a fan of Bullet for My Valentine's The Poison or My Chem's You Bought Me Bullet's you'll fall in love with this album before you get to the third track. With every song on the album sounding slightly like a different band, ranging from BfMV, Rise Against, Papa Roach and sometimes a glimmer of SoaD. There is most likely something for everyone on this album. If you listen to it the once and don’t like it at all, give it a second try at least. It will grow on you. Give it time and no doubt that the band will be getting overplayed on Kerrang! Radio and their TV channel along with Scuzz.
One of my favourite things to do with the album is to play it very loud to drown out the noise of anything being played from channels such as Kiss or anything that is sung or produced by anything beginning with MC. Trust me on this, Its like having teeth drilled by a Black and Decker without Novocain to chav's.
Overall the best track has to be the opening “Seafarers Song” which will most defiantly hook you to the rest of the album. It is all in all an amazing album and well worth the money. Defiantly worth the purchase for anyone into that sort of music.

Es gibt die zwei klassischen Archetypen in der Gemeinde der Metaller. Die einen sind sehr auf die Tradition ihrer Musik bedacht, die andern erfreuen sich an der Mannigfaltigkeit der dargebotenen Musik – auch gerne mal an der Kunst angrenzendenr Subkulturen. Wenn Sie, geneigter Leser, zur ersten Kategorie gehören, dann können sie getrost aufhören dieses Review zu lesen. – Archetypen der zweiten Kategorie sollten nun jedoch ihre Konzentration auf die folgenden Worte richten: KAUFT DIESE CD! – Sie bietet Euch eine sehr gut produziertes Scheibchen voller kreativem Rock, der gelegentlich die Randgebiete des Metalcore, aber auch des Indie streift. Die Musiker meistern ihre Aufgaben alle mit Bravour, vor allem der Gesang überzeugt immer wieder. Bedenkt man, dass es sich hierbei um die erste Veröffentlichung von Collarbone handelt, dann darf man zu Recht gespannt sein, was noch von den Jungs zu erwarten ist.

Es gibt Alben, die sind eigentlich ganz ordentlich, wollen aber irgendwie nicht so recht reinlaufen. So geht es mir beim Debütalbum der Finnen COLLARBONE. Die Songs gehen eigentlich gut ins Ohr, die Melodien sind gut und auch der Gesang ist ordentlich ausgefallen. Warum der Funke bei dieser Gute-Laune-Punkrock meets Nu Metal CD einfach nicht überspringen will, weiß ich auch nicht. Dabei sind "Up North", "The Sweetness" und das melancholisch-angehauchte "Ghost Of You" alles andere als schlechte Kost. Vielleicht kommt mir aber das ganze einfach zum größten Teil ein wenig zu lieb und nett rüber. Ein kleinen Funken mehr Drive und Power hätte vielleicht ganz gut getan. Naja ich gebe mal neutrale acht Punkte.

Die New Wave Of American Heavy Metal rollt unaufhörlich weiter. Diesmal kommt sie aber aus einer komplett anderen Richtung, nämlich aus Finnland. COLLARBONE beweisen mit ihrem Erstling „The Back Of Beyond“, dass sie zurecht die Pole Position beim finnischen „Sound & Fury“ Kontest geholt haben und stellen ein abwechslungsreiches Programm aus radiotauglichen und experimentellen Songs zusammen. Gleich zu Beginn steht mit „Seafarer´s Son“ ein ziemlich abgedrehter Opener, der in Richtung SYSTEM OF A DOWN driftet, gefolgt vom megaeingängigen „Up North“, das etwas an BLINK 182 mit tiefergelegten Gitarren erinnert.. Ähnlich bunt gemischt gestaltet sich die komplette CD, manchmal möchte man meinen, die Jungs wissen noch nicht so genau, was sie denn in Zukunft so fabrizieren wollen. Das soll aber nicht darüber hinweg täuschen, dass der Grossteil der Songs schon eine gewisse Klasse besitzt, denn mit den beiden vorhin genannten Tracks oder auch „Wither“, „The Sweetness“ und der Single „The Last Call“ ist den Finnen recht cooles Material gelungen. Und bei „Clearance“ packt man dann doch noch ein bisschen Metalcore aus der Kiste. Apropos Kiste: in die Kiste gepackt sprich produziert hat das gute Stück JONAS OLSSON, der auch schon mit DISCO ENSEMBLE und CALLISTO gewerkelt hat. Abgemischt wurde die Platte übrigens in New York von UE NASTASI (PANIC AT THE DISCO, TYPE O´ NEGATIVE, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE), und schon schließt sich der Kreis, denn diese Platte klingt amerikanisch! Und somit sollten alle, die auf die oben genannten Bands stehen, einfach mal ein Ohr reinwerfen, denn auf jeden Fall ist COLLARBONE ein gutes Debut gelungen und ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass wir noch einiges von dieser Band hören werden!

Raskaan säröisellä talttariffillä rytkyttävää rockia soittava helsinkiläinen yhtye yhdistelee soitossaan grungen sukuista alternativea, popahtavia skeittipunk-elementtejä kaartavista melodioista haikeisiin tunnelmointeihin sekä raskasta paahtoa. Lopputuloksena syntyy kiivaasti liukuvaa, pomputusta aiheuttavaa mutta samaan aikaan myös melodista modernia kaahausta. Rankkuutta tavoitellaan taltan lisäksi hetkittäisillä murinahuudoilla. Jonas Olssonin tuotantojäljen ja Jens Bogrenin miksauksen jäljiltä homma maistuu sulavasti sekä uhkaavan metalliselta että radiosoittokelpoisen popahtavalta.

Thomas Kirjosen toimivan tunteikas laulu saa hienosti tukea stemmoista. Hetkittäinen murinakin maistuu enemmän mausteelta kuin itse tarkoitukselta. Ei tässä tavoitella mitään metallisuosiota, ennemminkin Collarbone lähtee hakemaan yleisöä Disco Ensemblen ja vaikkapa Calliston omakseen kokevien keskuudesta. Vahva skedepunk-painotus luo mielikuvan yhtyeestä raskaampana vastauksena Good Charlottelle ja kumppaneille. Eli mielenkiintoisesta ja montaa nosteessa olevaa tyylilajia yhdistävästä jutusta on siis kyse. Sudenkuoppana saattaa olla se, että yhtye putoaa liikaa genrejen väliin – on liian metallista toisille ja liian lällyä toisille. Silti, täytyy todeta ammattimaisen tuotantojäljen ja ”ison maailman meiningin” ynnäämisen Collarbonen ennestään vahvaan biisimateriaaliin olevan erittäin perusteltu toimenpide. Yhtyeen tuoreus tai juttu ei ole kärsinyt viilauksesta, pikemminkin päinvastoin

Vuonna 2000 perustettu teinipoikien autotallibändi on kuudessa vuodessa kehittynyt siihen pisteeseen, että pojat ovat saaneet kunnollisen levysopimuksen ja ensimmäinen pitkäsoitto, The Back Of Beyond, on saapunut kauppoihin. Thomas, Matti, Janne ja Janne soittavat energistä ja menevää metallia Queens Of The Stone Agen hengessä.

Albumi startataan todella vahvasti biisillä Seafarer’s Song. Se näyttää heti mistä bändissä on kyse, ja millaista tavaraa on luvassa. Vaikka taustalla kuuluu paikoin matalaa örinää, on laulu puhdasta ja erittäin selkeää. Thomaksen lauluääni on hyvä, vaikka joissakin kappaleissa se ei tunnu olevan tarpeeksi vahva.

Up North tuo rakenteellaan ja sävellyksillään mieleen kovasti Uniklubin kappaleet, mutta positiivisessa mielessä. Sopivan kevyen metallibiisin voi helposti kuvitella soivan monen The Rasmuksenkin fanin autossa kesälomamatkalla. Samaa vetävää linjaa jatkaa Four Walls, sekä sen jälkeen kuultava singlelohkaisu The Last Call. Se toimii yhtä hyvin singlenä kuin albumiraitanakin, vaikka kappale onkin sisällöltään melankolista turhautuneisuutta.

Clearance on melkoista remuamista, ja rääkymällä hoidettu laulu ärsyttää. Muutoinkin levyn loppupuolella taso laskee hieman. Lopetusbiisi Ghost Of You on vielä ihan kelvollinen, mutta Petite Physique tuntuu täytteeltä. Parhaat hetket sijoittuvat levyn alkuun, jota hallitsevat erityisesti kaksi ensimmäistä raitaa.

Collarbone yllättää positiivisesti energisellä asenteellaan ja sopivasti erilaisilla, mutta silti vahvoilla sävellyksillään. Kuuntelunautintoa lisää vielä levyn hyvälaatuinen äänitys ja masterointi, joka saa bändin kuulostamaan tasapainoiselta. Vaikka mukana on muutamia hieman heikompiakin teoksia, The Back Of Beyond on hyvä osoitus, että tarpeeksi lahjakkaat tyypit saavat uransa nousuun autotallistakin.
