Cognate Souls Collective celebrates the beauty of combining our separate influences. We blend blues, jazz, rock and funk into a style of music that is ultimately dedicated to reminding our listeners of one major thing; we all create great music together.
In itself, ‘cognate’ means to derive from the same root, while ‘souls’ is all about our essence. We believe we all derive from God and enjoy presenting music that shares our zeal for life, shares stories of overcoming and the wonderful experiences that connect us all.
Cognate Souls Collective got its start when J. Kevin Powell and Glen Shaffer starting playing on the same worship team. They enjoyed how their styles, traditionally considered conflicting, actually worked in a way that allowed them to have a wonderful musical conversation. They began developing music that shared their faith but mixed styles influenced by funk, rock, jazz and blues. As they searched for a vocalist, Glen convinced Kevin to sing the original songs for their EP.
As the EP was about to launch, Rachel “5Q” Devery joined the group as a vocalist. Her soulful sound and effervescent presence brought an additional element the group needed. Rachel’s take on vocals added a bluesy sound that is identifiably connected to the sound of some of the best love songs of all times. Soon after, Matthew Jackson joined the band, rounding out the overall sound with his eclectic grooves that could shift between song sections.
As a collective, we all come together to form one unit working in the same direction. Huge fans of the 70s sound and showmanship, we bring our excitement for life to the stage and share it with our audience.
