Last year Australian songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Altmann shifted his focus away from his heavier project, the Vandas, to put out Que Paso, a solo album showcasing his country-soul side. He also recently relocated to Canada, where he’s now promoting the album.
Que Paso initially comes across as silly barroom country music, but it’s a grower. Altmann is charismatic and seemingly ready to move in new directions on bluesy opener Who Knows Where. Love Like This has a sweet, simple nostalgic feel, and All The Things That You Do is a clever, clangy duet.
Altmann sings comfortably from behind the kit, Levon Helm-style, and plays most of the instruments himself (very well). Because the music is so much in the spirit of the Band, you can’t help but wonder how much better it’ll all sound live.

Not sure if the term “Australiana” has been coined yet, but there’s a wave of roots-based artists from the land Down Under getting exposed in Canada. Altmann has actually relocated here (to Peterborough) and this country rock album shows he’s a talent worth welcoming. He has worked with such notables as Mick Thomas (Weddings Parties Anything), Wagons and the Little Stevies. On this, his debut solo CD, he shows he’s a skilled multi-instrumentalist (piano, banjo, drums and steel guitar), as well as a robust singer and talented songwriter. Pounding piano and female backing vocals are key ingredients to songs like “Deadly Nightshade” and “All The Things You Do,” making his sound more Leon Russell or Jerry Lee than Keith Urban. The raucous “Who Know Where” and “Hard Tac” likely go over a treat in a loud bar. The steel-driven “Love Like This” has a Blue Rodeo/Greg Keelor vibe, while the spirit of Doug Sahm permeates “Muchos Grandes.” This is an upbeat and highly entertaining premiere outing.

When you feel like youre lost, and tired from travelling, walk on, youre slowly heading home. Thats the first line of song written by a man who, geographically, has many homes. Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chris Altmann is originally from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, and now divides his time between Melbourne, Toronto, and Nashville. Along his journey he has embraced many musical styles; from his first group, country-rock tinged The Drowners, to the more modern pop/rock sound of The Vandas, and on to a solo career steeped in early 1970s Americana.
If home is where the heart is, then Altmanns current residence is within his latest musical project, Nothing But Nice Things, a follow up to his 2010 solo debut, Que Paso. Here you will find a more sophisticated writer, who has drawn from his recent experience co-writing with some of Nashvilles hottest to select 10 of his strongest compositions. The album explores themes like spirituality, love, and people in society, with soulful, piano-driven melodies, sparse guitars, and rich backing vocals grooving to solid drum and bass lines.
When not playing shows with his 10-piece revue-style band in Melbourne, Chris handles lead guitar duties for alt-country group Wagons, and is in demand as a session player, appearing on dozens of roots recordings in Australia and Canada.
Altmann will finish 2012 with an extensive Australian tour in support of Nothing But Nice Things. He then will return to Nashville to embark on a 3-month songwriting residency funded by the Australia Council for the Arts, who selected Altmann as the first recipient of this new initiative. With a live album, studio album and European tour planned for 2013, Altmann is in the midst of the biggest creative output of his career.

Impossible to resist. Altmanns charisma just shines, the songs are great, the album sounds like it was a buzz to make. Rhythms Magazine
An upbeat and highly entertaining premiere outing. Exclaim! Magazine
3 stars. The record sizzles and pops like beans over a fire; one part 70s Rolling Stones, one part The Band, and one part Faces. Chris rocks his big-hatted butt off! The Sunday Mail, Adelaide.
4 stars. Theres nothing alternative about Chris Altmanns brand of country. Que Paso is like a double shot of Jack Daniels served up straight. - The Age, Melbourne
Que Paso is so much more than booze and bruising country rock. Theres no real mystery in Chris Altmanns ability to search out, mine and exploit the best in country and southern bar rock its simply a matter of raw talent. Beat Magazine
