"BAND KICKS OFF 2015 TOUR AT SOPER REESE THEATRE, LAKEPORT, CA"

By Jennifer Gruenke, jgruenke@record-bee.com, @rbjgruenke on Twitter

Jesse, Kyle and Jaden Crosson and Jacob and Connor Gill share more than just familial bonds. Three and a half years ago, the two sets of brothers joined forces to create indie rock band Cheating Daylight. And while this musical connection isn’t necessarily more powerful than their family ties, it’s certainly significant in its own way. “I really do think that brothers, when it comes to music, I think we know what we’re all thinking and we can communicate on a different level,” Jesse Crosson commented.

The young rockers have some serious ambition. “This is my whole life, playing drums. It’s everything I’ve wanted to do since I was 6 and I’m 16 now,” said Jaden Crosson. “I plan on doing this the rest of my life, touring the country and making records … I would never want to do it with anyone else. I think that with all the passion that we have for what we do, we all have the same dreams and ambitions, we plan on turning this into something huge.”

The brothers didn’t set out to make their music into a career, but the band now certainly seems to be heading in that direction. “Music generally starts out as a hobby for everybody,” said Jesse Crosson. “If you play music usually it’s because it makes you feel good to do it. I think we all feel really, really lucky if we can turn something we love into a profession … If we could turn a hobby like music into a career, that’s what we want. We want to be able to do this for our living.”

When Cheating Daylight first formed, the group lived more or less in the same area, attending middle school and high school in Vacaville and Middletown. But a few years down the road and the band is spread out all around Northern California. Kyle, Jesse and Jacob are now college students at Solano Community College, Sacramento State and UC Berkeley, respectively. Jaden and Connor still attend high school. But despite the distance and high levels of flux, the group still manages to come together at least once a week for shows or rehearsal.

However, making time for a performance or practice isn’t without its challenges. “Sometimes we’ll still have to miss a week of class to go to L.A. or something,” Jacob Gill said. “We did a four day stint on the Epic Proportions tour.” While making up for missed days is undoubtedly challenging, the group knows that they these are difficulties they signed up for.

“You just have to make sacrifices,” said Kyle Crosson. “Sacrificing as a band is something we do well together because we all have the same dream. Music to all of us is our number one goal.”

Jacob Gill expressed a similar sentiment. “I know people who are athletes in college or are super involved in other things and you make time for whatever you’re passionate about and we make it happen somehow or other,” he said.

It’s clear that the band has a high level of commitment to the music, the band’s future and one another, but when more pressing issues do arise, each brother can count on helping hands from the rest of the group. “If there’s something they need, anything that we can do or anything that anyone needs to do, we’ll always accommodate it,” said Kyle Crosson. “It’s a group effort and we’ll always support each other no matter what.”

This support never seems to waver. The phrase “fight like siblings” can’t really be applied to these particular guys. “Musically it’s more advantageous being family sometimes,” said Jesse Crosson. “There is a certain kind of musical chemistry as brothers. I don’t know if it’s genetic or what.” The rest of the group murmured in assent.

With a Vans Warped Tour date, a performance at the famous Whisky A Go Go and a decent list of red carpet music industry awards, Cheating Daylight’s chemistry, plus a good deal of talent and hard work, has certainly paid off. “[Warped Tour] was pretty incredible. We got to meet and see a lot of bands that we admired and are influenced by,” said Jacob Gill. “Probably in terms of our fan base it was definitely a big deal for us.”

Like any good music group, Cheating Daylight knows their fans are the gateway to success. “I think social media is a big part of getting your name out there and staying in touch with your fans,” said Jaden Crosson. “Definitely social media is one of the biggest keys to having a bigger fan base and reaching out to different parts of the world. I love it.”

Of course, forming solid relationships with fans is of as much importance as the band’s growing success. “We like to keep in touch with our fans,” said Jacob Gill, explaining that the group likes to hold contests and merchandise giveaways. “We just do whatever we can to really engage with our fans. We want to be accessible and have a good relationship with them. Social media is probably one of the biggest parts of that.”

“We do like to interact with our fans,” Jesse Crosson added. “We love it when people follow our own personal accounts too. It’s really cool when fans get to be a part of our lives.”

Though the group forms a virtual relationship with their fans via social media, nothing can replace the connection forged during a live show. “With music it is a very next level connection,” Jesse Crosson said. “It is beyond words, beyond concrete description. It is something you only know if you feel it. It is unlike anything else … Just the feeling of playing music and people engaging in that conversation with us is the best thing ever.”

Jacob Gill agreed, also struggling to put the sensation into words. “My favorite part is probably just the same thing. When you go to a live show there’s a certain connection that forms between the people in the crowd and the people on stage,” he said. “When I’m jamming next to one of these guys there’s just a certain, I don’t know how to describe it exactly, exchange of creative energy. You get to feed off of the crowd and they get to feed off of you. It’s an experience that you can’t really describe and it’s addicting.”

“You see people singing music back to you that you created yourself,” Jaden Crosson said. When the crowd sings along, he thinks, “No matter what happens I’m always going to remember this feeling.”

Connor Gill also expressed enjoying the physical exhilaration of a performance. “I like to be loud enough to where I can feel it,” he said, describing the vibrations of his bass guitar.

Though the group has three albums worth of original music to pull from, everyone likes a good cover, especially when it undergoes a transformation, which is just how Cheating Daylight operates. “We do like to cover more mainstream bands,” said Jaden Crosson, listing Taylor Swift, Goyte and Miley Cyrus as a few recognizable artists. “It’s more, like, poppy so we get to turn it into more rock, edgier, indie style.”

“Our favorite kind of cover to do is taking a pop song and turning it into something heavy,” Jacob Gill added. “I hate top 40 but I love top 40 played with guitars.”

When it comes to their original music, each member contributes his own unique influences in forging the band’s sound. Jesse Crosson lists bands like Paramore and Fall Out Boy as highly inspirational as well as classic rock and somewhat from left field, jazz music. Jacob Gill, on the other hand, spends the majority of his time listening to hip hop and metal. Connor Gill is currently on a Simon and Garfunkle kick, but his biggest influences are “heavy” bands like Fall of Troy. Jaden Crosson looks to quirkier artists such as Twenty One Pilots and Of Mice and Men, which he describes as original and artistic. He also proudly admitted to enjoying 5 Seconds of Summer, a guilty pleasure his band mates have perhaps teased him about once or twice. “One might call me a fan girl,” he joked.

“As a group I know we come from a lot of different musical backgrounds,” said Jesse Crosson. “It’s really crazy how eclectic our musical tastes are.”

So it’s no surprise that Cheating Daylight’s sound has varied over the years. “Our music has gone through a transformation … All the music that we’re writing for our third album is indie rock with pop influence,” said Jesse Crosson, though he struggled to give their music a succinct label. The group uses rock guitars and synth sounds. Kyle Crosson’s vocals have pop vibes. “It’s a weird mix but generally we call it indie rock.”

Cheating Daylight’s newest album, “Anywhere by Home” will be released this summer, which means a tour to promote the record, beginning with a kick-off show at the Soper Reese Theatre this coming Saturday. The group is especially excited for this particular show. “Unlike a club where we have a time constraint, we can just do what we want because it’s our home turf,” said Jacob Gill, who anticipates the night to be “one of the best shows of the summer.”

The show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 14 at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport. Tickets are on sale now for $25 and can be purchased online at www.cheatingdaylight.com or www.soperreesetheatre.com and at the Soper Reese Box Office or the Travel Center in Lakeport.

"Family of Friends...Cheating Daylight"

San Francisco – There is something to the age-old saying, “friends become our chosen family;” it has a certain flair that inspires all of us to appreciate and love the people we surround ourselves with.
Friends gained from work can turn out to be some of the best you’ll ever have. But what happens when your family is your work? This trend has become increasingly popular over the years, especially in the realm of music. Bands like The National, HAIM, and Arcade Fire all share familial relations within their respective ranks. While at times the family connection can be troubling and difficult, ultimately it results in a collective bond that drives each outfit forward. When it comes down to it, blood ties lead to the most honest music, and the Bay Area’s Cheating Daylight looks to be the next installment in a long line of musically talented families.
Cheating Daylight, who we discovered on ReverbNation, saw their synthesis when the three Crosson brothers joined forces with the two Gill brothers – under the diligent eye of shared manager Greg Bennett – and they “have never looked back.” As they joined forces, they mixed rock, early alternative, punk, folk, and country influences to create a cornucopia of sound of calculated variety.
In the beginning, it was notably difficult for the band to find their voice. “I would say that we have evolved from a more shotgun-style approach in our music to a more focused and honed sound,” says lead guitarist Jacob Gill. “In the early days, we wrote stuff that was all over the place, which is really fun. But we’ve worked hard to make everything – the live show, communicating with fans, and albums – something that can be identified as Cheating Daylight, without sacrificing our musical diversity.”
The band’s sound is admittedly difficult to pinpoint at first, as they boast such an eclectic blend of influences and sound. Their sophomore album, 2013’s Road To Somewhere, exhibits this scope, which ranges from brash responses to bubblegum punk to banjo-tinged sweetness. Road to Somewhere blasts the listener with such stylistic breadth that it is sometimes difficult to ascertain the underlying message, but the band executes each style of music with such ferocity and intention that the feeling still remains.
The band’s influences stretch across quite a impressive range, including favorites like Paramore, The Ramones, and Blink 182, while citing esoteric and unexpected artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Vaccines, Rocket to the Moon, and Twenty-One Pilots. The band members all feel that their tastes are unique, yet they all play a part in the composition of their shared tracks. As drummer Jaden Crosson remarks, “the music I listen to affects my style and creative process greatly! As I listen to let’s say, Of Mice & Men, I try to pick out different fills or bass drum rhythms I never could have thought of on my own. Then I sort of copy and paste them in our songs and see if it fits.”
His brother Jesse Crosson also cites influential eclecticism, saying: “We listen to everything, from punk rock to bebop jazz, and I’ve always thought that all music you’re exposed to affects what you create.” Jacob Gill agrees as well, saying, “You can’t come up with something fresh and exciting if you don’t embrace everything.”
The native Northern Californians also draw influence from their surroundings, especially the city of San Francisco. “Going to the city and seeing all the culture inspires me to want to be a part of it,” bassist Connor Gill remarks. Jaden Crosson feels much closer to his roots, citing his hometown of Vacaville, CA, as his biggest influence. “The support here is incredible and I just really want to show them that all of their support and encouragement was needed to be where we are today,” he says. “The culture in Northern California has played a great role in shaping our personalities more than anything,” his brother Jesse reflects. “We are all very family-oriented and we try really hard to stay grounded as people. That’s the way we were raised and we take pride in it.” Jacob Gill finds inspiration in other ways, including classic American authors like Steinbeck and Fitzgerald. Ultimately, however, he finds that “nothing is more inspiring and influential as just living and being human; plenty of good songs come out of those kinds of experiences.”
Cheating Daylight, like any other musical outfit, encounters difficulties from time to time. Nothing juicy or dramatic or Fleetwood Mac-like, but the members all live in different cities, which can cause a strain on the creative process. “It affects our rehearsals for sure,” says Jesse. “It’s tough living apart, but when everyone is committed to the project, we get a lot done and we can make progress like we’re in the same room.” Their creative process is somewhat unorthodox in terms of traditional songwriting, but modern technology keeps them together. “We write a lot of the raw ideas on our own,” remarks Jacob. “We use cloud storage to share all of our musical ideas, and then when it comes to a rehearsal, we spend all day working on everything.” Lead vocalist Kyle exudes confidence that distance isn’t an issue: “It doesn’t affect our creativity because we always bring our ideas together.”
So what’s next for Cheating Daylight? The band is currently at work on their next studio album, to be released in late 2014, and have been touring vigorously. Recently Cheating Daylight was crowned the winners of the Ernie Ball competition, landing them a spot at the Vans Warped Tour’s stop in Wheatland, CA in June. “I have been rehearsing about 2-3 hours everyday to get ready for VWT,” says Jaden. “I have dreamed of playing this gig for the past 5 years.” They are also testing out some new material on the road, namely the lead single off their new album, a track called “Anywhere But Here.” The song is a melancholy stomper, boasting pumping guitar strokes, gusty vocals harmonics, and syrupy organ tones that evoke images of sun-swept highways. The band also just released a new track called “Love You (All Around the World),” a tender, jaunty love song that blends playfulness and sentimentality together to create an all-around enjoyably heartfelt track.
“The new music we’ve written has come from a completely new process,” reflects Jesse. “This has been far more collaborative between the band members and we’ve really come together on what we want our music to sound like. That really helps make the songs more special and stronger altogether.” His brother Kyle, the lead vocalist, agrees that this is big step forward: “We have learned to write catchier hooks and better-developed songs.”
The new album features work with producer Isha Erskine, who’s worked with artists like Maroon 5 and Ziggy Marley, as well as producing Cheating Daylight’s earlier records. “He is great at getting us to think outside of the box and bring a song to life,” says Jacob Gill. “I think this one is different from previous releases because we’ve matured a lot as writers, but we’re still young and energetic. We want this record to embody who we are as a band.”
When asked what the ultimate goal of Cheating Daylight is, each member had something different to say. “We want to be a presence in people’s lives,” reflects Jesse Crosson. “When we’re all done with this musical journey, whenever that is, we want to have created something people will remember.” His brother Jaden shares a similar outlook, hoping to be a positive influence: “I hope to be someone’s influence and role model.” Jacob Gill finds solace in the band’s hopefully imminent longevity: “The goal of the band is to make music our entire life. I once had a conversation with a man who said, ‘It’s not about having money, it’s about not having to worry about the money.’ That’s so accurate. We just want to keep playing until our fingers fail us.” His brother Connor has less complex yet equally profound aspirations, stating simply, “I just want the music to be heard by people all around the world.”
The future looks bright for Cheating Daylight. With the Warped Tour—and countless other previous festival appearances—under their belt, as well as three LA Music Awards nominations, they have already started to make a splash in contemporary rock music. They look to the future with clear eyes, and credit their fans as the driving force that keeps them going. “The best part about being in Cheating Daylight is playing shows and looking out in the crowd and seeing all the faces of the people who have been there since the beginning, and seeing everyone just have a good time,” notes Jaden Crosson. His brother Kyle agrees: “Our fans love us. I feed off the energy of the crowd and I love it.”
Cheating Daylight is still honing in on their unique voice, but they seem to be getting closer every day. They would not have come as far as they have, however, without the constant support they give one another, as well as the limitless passion they feel for what they do. “The most personally appealing thing about being in a band like this is the opportunity to be something bigger than just one person,” reflects Jesse Crosson. “I love that I get to wake up knowing there are thousands of people out there who are with me and my brothers, sharing the experiences only music can provide. And it’s OUR music. That’s really something incredible.”

"CHEATING DAYLIGHT FANS CHEER AT MALIBU AWARD SHOW"

Cheating Daylight fans cheer at Malibu
By Rich Freedman/
Posted: 10/25/2013 01:03:34 AM PDT

Ho hum, just another award for Cheating Daylight.
OK, it's not become quite that boring for the three Vacaville brothers and two Lakeport siblings. But any more of these honors and someone's going to have to add a room to put all the trophy hardware.
Latest mountain conquered for the lads: "Best New Artist" at last week's 2013 Malibu Music Festival and Awards Show at the Smothers Theatre at Pepperdine University.
On the heels of winning the 2012 Indie Artist of the Year, 2012 Rock Artist of the Year, the Malibu triumph adds more street cred to the band that started two years ago.
And there are still upcoming awards shows -- four in 2013 and early 2014 -- that are up for grabs, which makes manager Greg Bennett one happy grown-up.
Bennett, still fresh off the Malibu high, said the "Artist of the Year" honor "hopefully continues to legitimize the credibility of the band in the eyes of the music industry."
The recent honor "adds to their considerable music résumé," continued Bennett, "as the journey toward building a long and substantive career continues."
Cheating Daylight -- Jesse, Kyle and Jaden Crosson and Jacob and Connor Gill -- excelled under the pressure of the Malibu show, Bennett said.
"They really are seasoned performers and road warriors, who are used to the bright lights," Bennett said. "They have appeared on so many red carpets and performed at so many legendary venues, they were prepared for an event of this magnitude."
Bill Crosson, dad to the three Vacaville brothers, said of the event, "clearly this was a whole new level of show biz. The compliments from some famous artists was surreal to hear. The band really felt this was validation that they can hang with the big boys on any stage. They are thirsty right now
for more."
Cheating Daylight beat the Coo Coo Birds and Nightmare and the Cat for "Best Artist" accolades and deserved the top spot, Bennett said.
"They have worked hard at refining all the components that go into success at this level and their effort paid off with an exceptional performance on stage, back stage and on the red carpet," Bennett said.
Backstage, the fab five took photos with actor Dick Van Dyke, whose best work happened long before the musicians were born.
No matter.
"Another amazing icon that these five young men get to add to their collection of musical memories," Bennett said, acknowledging that "they may be too young to really appreciate the significance" of meeting veteran stars.
Next up: Opening for rocker Eddie Money at the Uptown Theatre in Napa on Nov. 22.
"We're thrilled to have Cheating Daylight making their Uptown debut," said Mindi Levine, Uptown's marketing director. " It's always a big pleasure for us to be able to showcase up-and-coming bands, with an extra bonus that they are from the area."

"CHEATING DAYLIGHT IN FINALS AS BEST TEEN BAND IN USA"

The teenage band of brothers, Cheating Daylight, can't seem to stay away from the red carpet.

The rockers, consisting of Vacaville's three Crosson brothers and the two Gill brothers from Cobb (near Clear Lake), have advanced to the finals of the National Association of Music Merchant's Best Teen Band in the U.S.A.

Cheating Daylight joins seven other bands from America on Jan. 26 at Downtown Disney in Anaheim for the finals during the NAMM convention, when each band will play a four-song set in front of judges from 5 to 10 p.m. that day. The winner will be announced on the morning of Jan. 27.

The competition began in August when NAMM reviewed submissions from "thousands of aspiring teenage bands," said Cheating Daylight band manager Greg Bennett, in a press release.

A panel of judges narrowed the list to 100 bands for the semifinal round. At that point, a combination of fan votes and music professionals' rankings determined the final eight, during more than a monthlong competition.

Cheating Daylight finished fourth with 14,812 votes and was awarded $1,000 by advancing to the finals.

The winner will take home $5,000 for its high school music program, $1,000 in music gear and will have a music video recorded of them on the John Lennon Educational Bus.

The winning band will then head to Europe April 18-22 to perform at SchoolJam in Frankfurt, Germany.

Cheating Daylight's competition will come from as far away as Kentucky and Tennessee and

It has been a good year for Cheating Daylight, as the band was named 2012 I.M.F Indie Artist of the Year and 2012 L.A. Music Awards' Rock Artist of the Year.

The band -- Jesse Crosson, 18, Kyle Crosson, 16, Jaden Crosson, 13, Jacob Gill, 17, and Connor Gill, 13 -- is in the final stages of its 70-date "All We Know" tour, with their last performance at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall on Dec. 28.

Cheating Daylight will then focus on perfecting its four original songs that the band will play during the Jan. 26 competition in Anaheim.

"Mansion Party with Music Execs for Cheating Daylight"

Imagine being invited to play a private party for one the most influential men in music, at his own, beautiful home overlooking Hollywood from the hills and in front of 30-50 of his best friends and most esteemed colleagues. You're 18 years old and your band, which consists of two of your brothers and yourself, plus two other brothers, ranges in age from 13-18. Yes, this is big time, but what makes it so incredibly amazing is that you and your band are not even remotely fazed by this.

I was lucky to have been invited to this private party thrown by Ted Cohen, Managing Partner and co-founder of TAG Strategic, and his wife Deborah at their beautiful home, playfully known as Casa Tedborah in the hills of Hollywood. Ted is a music industry veteran, and has previously served as senior management for EMI, Warner Bros. and Phillips Media. The party wasn't catered, Deborah did all the cooking and the food was incredible. Everybody brought their favorite libations. Ted decided to throw this party last minute, got on his iPad in search of a band after serving as keynote at a music conference, and Cheating Daylight raised their hands to exactly the right person at exactly the right time. Kudos too, to Allie Shaw for making it happen.

Did I mention what an incredible opportunity this was for Cheating Daylight? And I guess when Richie Sambora and Billy Corgan are already singing your praises, something like this opportunity may seem as simply part of your routine plan for music industry domination when you're a teenager. Most teenagers are playing guitar hero in their parents' basement. Cheating Daylight is playing guitar hero for Ted Cohen and his highly influential industry friends.

Jesse Crosson plays guitar, keys and trombone and is 18 years old.
Jacob Gill pays lead guitar, he is extraordinary, and is 17 years old.
Kyle Crosson is the lead vocalist. He's 15.
Connor Gill gave up guitar to play bass in this band and stands a whopping 4' 9" with or without his shirt on. He is 13 years old.
Jaden Crosson plays an absolutely fiery drums and really drives the band from the back. He is 13 years old.
Wow. Just wow.

And the band is terrific, and that's an easy sell. Potentially the sky is the limit. They have a great stage presence, impeccable cohesiveness and a great sound. They opened with a song called All I Know, which sounded almost very early Ramones, and finished up with a song called What We Say that was their best of the night after an audience requested encore. In between, they offered up a mix of originals with one or two covers that showed Blink 182 and All Time Low influences. The accolades for this band just keep pouring in as well. Last year they were named the Power Pop Band Of The Year at the 21st Annual Los Angeles Music Awards. To say they are on the fast track would be putting it mildly. They certainly had no reason to feel awestruck at a party of this magnitude.

Before they did their encore, lead vocalist Kyle Crosson sheepishly asked the crowd if they wanted to hear an original song or a cover song. As I was standing next to Ted, he offered this bit of wisdom to Cheating Daylight: "Play an original song, pretty soon other bands will be covering you guys!"

Truer words were never spoken.

LAKE COUNTY — The progressive and contemporary style of Cheating Daylight gained respectable accolades recently.
The band comprised of two Lake County and three Vacaville brothers was nominated as 2012 Rock Artist of the Year and Showcase Artist of the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards that will be held in Hollywood in November.
Members of the band of brothers said they went from being strangers to forging an instant connection.
Bass player, 12-year-old Connor Gill, said, “We started jamming right off the bat on the first day.”
The senior member of the band, Jesse Crosson, 17, is a music aficionado. He attends Sacramento State University. He is a multi-instrumentalist and a member of the wind ensemble as well as the big band. Jesse says he incorporates those subtle elements and variety into the music of Cheating Daylight.
Lead vocalist Kyle Crosson follows in his brother’s footsteps, playing the trombone. Kyle also makes time to play on the baseball team. The youngest Crosson brother, Jaden, 13, plays drums.
All the band members are also exemplary students. Guitarist and vocalist Jacob Gill, 16, said he comes from an academic family and it is imperative to maintain good grades and find balance between school studies and music.
The band anticipates playing about 50 shows this year, kicking off the tour with the Indie Music Festival in Las Vegas in April.
Cheating Daylight heads into the studio this week to record its debut album, titled, “All We Know,” produced by Isha Erskine at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati.
Erskine has worked with Mutt Lange, The Black-Eyed Peas, Maroon 5 and Jeff Beck, to name a few.

"ONE BAND...2 Sets of...BROTHERS"

VACAVILLE — Cheating Daylight is truly a band of musical brothers.
The Crosson Brothers of Vacaville and the Gill Brothers of Lake County recently joined forces to become Cheating Daylight.
In September, the band performed at the Vacaville Performing Arts Center. They return on Nov. 19 for a show featuring other local musicians: Ever Ours, The Honeybee Trio and Robbie Gardenio.

“We’ve meshed musically,” said Jacob Gill, 16, who plays guitar and sings in Cheating Daylight.
He formerly played with The Lost Boys, based in Lake County.
“It all blends together pretty nicely,” he added.
His younger brother, Connor Gill, 12, also played guitar with The Lost Boys.
For Cheating Daylight, he was assigned to bass duties.
“I’d never played bass before,” Connor Gill said. “I picked up the bass and started getting serious about it. It’s great.”
The group practices at Konocti Harbor on weekends and is in the process of working on a new album.
Jesse Crosson, 17, who kicks off the songwriting process, promises some new flavor.
“You don’t want every meal you eat to taste the same,” he said. “We are doing more guitar solos. That’s different for us.
“I take what I know I can do and move forward and keep going.”
Jesse Crosson, who is studying jazz trombone at California State University, Sacramento, also works via Skype with the Gill brothers when needed.
“We come up with a blueprint (for the song). A melody, a chord progression,” said drummer Jaden Crosson, 12.
Then the vocals are tweaked to fit into 15-year-old singer Kyle Crosson’s range.
Earlier this year, the Crosson Brothers released their debut CD, “Lights Out.”
The Lost Boys released their third album, “Running Red Lights,” earlier this year.
“We are moving toward tour dates in the future,” Kyle Crosson said.
Jacob Gill hopes the band is on the brink of something big and said he’d like to see Cheating Daylight play music as long as they can. And, at the same time, leave a lasting impression on the music scene.
On Thursday, the band was slated to play at the Los Angeles Music Awards as well as accept the Power Pop Band of the Year Award.
“To win that award is icing on the cake,” Jaden Crosson said.
Cheating Daylight is working with Greg Bennett, who was president and general manager of Konocti Harbor Resort and Spa.
“With him, anything is possible,” Kyle Crosson said.

"CHEATING DAYLIGHT...SPECIAL BLEND!"

Usually, when you blend two families, there's bound to be some bumps and bruises along the way. In this case, though, instead of families, the blend was two bands of brothers, and the result was dynamite -- Cheating Daylight -- a dynamic power pop band that has been taking the music scene by storm, one note at a time.

Less than three months after their first practice together (which also happened to be the first day the two sets of brothers met) the band is just days away from a live performance on the red carpet at the 21st annual Los Angeles Music Awards, where the five-member band was named producer's choice recipient of the Power Pop Band of the Year award.

Although the band is newly formed, its members are no strangers to the music scene. A combination of a local Vacaville band, The Crosson Brothers, and remnants of The Lost Boys, an award-winning band out of Lake County, the group came to life as Cheating Daylight on Aug. 12.

Cheating Daylight's catchy tunes and smooth pop beats are built on the foundation of 15-year-old Kyle Crosson's strong, clear vocals, while younger brother Jaden, 12, keeps them on track with his steady rhythm on drums and older brother Jesse, 17, brings adept songwriting skills, harmony and rhythm guitar to the table. The Gills tout 16-year-old Jacob's smooth blues-influenced guitar riffs while Connor, 12, is "slappin' da bass" guitar.

Thursday's ceremony, which is being held at the historic Avalon Theatre, will be the second

time Jacob and Connor hit the red carpet, after making an appearance last year as part of The Lost Boys, which was named Rock Artist of the Year.

Although it will be one of the biggest shows they've played together, you won't find pre-performance jitters rocking these musicians or taking away from their enjoyment of the opportunity.

"I'd say it's probably the most exciting (show), for sure," Jesse says. "Maybe it's not true for everybody, but ... we just don't get that nervous. It's too much fun to waste any time being nervous about it."

Meet the Gills

After first picking up a guitar five years ago, Jake drew a lot of his early inspiration from guitar solos by Angus Young of AC/DC fame.

"My dad kind of raised me and Connor on rock 'n' roll," he says. "My biggest influence guitar-playing wise probably comes from the blues, like Stevie Ray Vaughan, and we just saw B.B. King and Buddy Guy together a few weeks ago. But also, I listen to everything, so I get a lot of influence from old Metallica stuff, Journey, Neal Schon, all those guys, so pretty much all over the board."

According to the boy's father, Tim Gill, who has been playing the guitar for 30 years, the budding musicians quickly outstripped his ability to teach them. At 13, Jake started a band with a few friends and, after playing with them for about a year, joined The Lost Boys, who were in need of a lead guitarist.

While Connor originally wanted to play harmonica, he gave up on that dream when he realized how difficult it would be to find a harmonica teacher. Instead, he picked up the guitar at the age of 7. Connor switched to bass earlier this year when the bassist for The Lost Boys quit.

"They came to me and I had like two days to learn this 15-song set, or something crazy like that," he says.

Meet the Crossons

The Gills journey into the musical spotlight is similar to that of The Crosson Brothers, who started performing as a cover band for family and friends and gradually worked their way up to signing with R.A.G. Records, an independent label, and recording their first album in LA, with help from their producer, "Lopez Tonight" drummer Robin DiMaggio.

Their draw to music comes honestly, with a dad, Bill Crosson, who has played the drums for more than three decades.

"Our dad played a lot of music around the house when we were younger," says Jesse. "He was a drummer back when he was in high school and stuff so he had a drum set from back in the day and he had always tried to get us on the drums."

After Kyle "took to singing" and Jesse taught himself guitar, it would ultimately fall to the youngest brother, Jaden, who conveniently had the best sense of rhythm, to follow their father's drumming footsteps.

Something clicked

When The Lost Boys disbanded earlier this year at the end of their North America tour, the two groups made the connection through their agent, Greg Bennett, with Bennett Entertainment Group.

Apparently, when it's right, it's right, and something between the five teens clicked during that first meeting.

"We just started jamming together and learned some of each other's songs and it was cool," Jake explains. "I think The Crosson Brothers had a really cool sound and I think me and Connor have someth - The Reporter Daily Newspaper, November 6, 2011, Vacaville, CA

"Lost Boys win at 20th annual Los Angeles Music Awards"

Staff reports
HOLLYWOOD — They are some of the most hallowed grounds in Hollywood, and Paramount Studios continues to carry the reputation as the crown jewel of “Tinseltowns” film industry.
Billed as the longest operating and only remaining major studio, the historic lot boasts 30 stages, six theatres, nine urban city sets, eight New York City sets and special event seating for 5,000 guests.
The studio also plays host to some of the most popular shows on television, from Glee to NCIS Los Angeles, to Dr. Phil, and is called home by many of the most celebrated and award winning, motion pictures in film history.
The picturesque theatres and tall buildings also make the Paramount Studios an ideal location for the many industry award shows, held each year and a perfect backdrop to the prestigious 20th annual Los Angeles Music Awards.
Often called the longest running red carpet event for independent musicians in the world, the LAMA’s have a 20 year history dating back to 1991. And the numbers for the Los Angeles Music Awards are staggering. During a 20-year history for the red carpet award show, organizers have honored thousands of independent and emerging artists from around the globe, selected from hundreds of thousands of musicians from every continent, looking to use the LAMA’s to launch their careers in the music industry.
The names associated with this long-running production read like a who’s who of rock stars: Paula Abdul, Jackson Browne, Korn, Sugar Ray, Black Eyed Peas, System of A Down, 311, and Gwen Stefani with No Doubt, are just a few of the past award recipients at the Los Angeles Music Awards. And now add a teenage rock band from Northern California called The Lost Boys, to that list.
On a chilly Nov. 18 evening at Paramount Studios largest theatre, Founder and Executive Producer of the Los Angeles Music Awards, Al Bowman, took the stage at the Paramount Theatre, and announced “This year we’ve had more than 11,000 artist submissions, to the LA Music Awards, and tonight we are here to honor the very best of the best, the winners for each of the 26 musical categories. And The Los Angeles Music Awards 2010 Rock Artist of the Year award, goes to The Lost Boys, from Lake County, California. With that and a heavy downbeat by founding member/drummer Jordan Mills, the award show began with The Lost Boys performing their single and title of the new album, Red Light, followed by a standing ovation, and an encore performance of a second song, StarStruck, scheduled to be launched to national radio in January.
The emerging teenage rock band can add this to their growing collection of awards and accolades. In February, The D.I.Y. Music Festival, named The Lost Boys as their 2010 Independent Artist of the Year, at a Hollywood dinner held in their honor and recently the band was voted Pop/Rock New Artist of the Year, and Best Live Performance of the Year, in a 2010 Voter’s Poll by USA4real upstream radio artists and listeners, worldwide.

The band has also appeared as Special Guests with 20 national headliners, including 3 Doors Down, All-American Rejects, Kelly Clarkson, Journey, and Toby Keith.

"Lost Boys Mixin' it up with Nickelback's Joey Moi"

They are just five regular teenage guys from Lake County, but recently the lives of Beau Bastian 18, Jordan Mills, 18, Matt Weiss, 17, Thomas Cano, 18 and Jacob Gill, 15, have been anything but average.
By day, the five lifelong friends are teenage buddies, livin’ the dream.

The Lost Boys have traversed the West Coast, from Vancouver, B.C. to Park City, Utah to Hollywood, to Yuma, Arizona, playing legendary venues, clubs, fairs and festivals while winning a multitude of independent music awards, and wooing a growing fan base with radio-friendly repertoire of original songs.
As summer draws to a close, an award winning engineer, producer, mixer, songwriter, and rock legend, has agreed to join The Lost Boys project. Joey Moi, of Nickelback fame has announced he will mix the new songs on the upcoming album by The Lost Boys. Moi, has co-produced the Nickelback albums, from the beginning, and is credited with creating the distinctive rock sound of the multi-platinum recording artist.
He has also worked as co-producer, mixer, and songwriter on a long list of projects, with the likes of superstars such as Hinder, Daughtry, Santana, and Tim McGraw.
The Lost Boys songs will be mixed at Mountain View Studios, in Vancouver B.C., Canada, a facility that is co-owned by Joey Moi, and Nickelback frontman, Chad Kroeger whose studios have produced a string of recording industry successes.
Moi, joins acclaimed song man and multi-Grammy Award winning producer, David Kershenbaum, who will be charged with producing the new record.

During the nearly two-year-run, The Lost Boys have appeared as special guests for the bands such as, 3 Doors Down, All-American Rejects, Kelly Clarkson, Toby Keith and 19 National Acts.
The band has played with Journey in 15,000-seat Raley Field Stadium in Sacramento and have turned into headliners in the band’s own right, selling out theatres and playing to record-setting radio shows.
The Lost Boys were also found by video game giant Nintendo and featured in a national advertising campaign, running in theatres and on MTV, Nickelodeon, and Disney channels through 2010. In the Nintendo commercial, the “Boys” star alongside acclaimed actor Seth Green, who plays the newly released Dragon Quest IX video game, while attending a concert performed by The Lost Boys, as the band plays its song, “I’m Not Popular,” to a sold out concert, at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood.
Next on the horizon, for The Lost Boys, is a new album being recorded in Los Angeles at the Skip Saylor Recording Studios, whose history is deeply entrenched in Hollywood lore, and where people like Elton John, Guns ‘N’ Roses and Tom Petty chose to make music.
The Lost Boys “Why Not Now,” tour continues to garner rave reviews from industry insiders, and the teenage quintet will burst out of the studios on July 31, headlining the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma.
