"Chasing Carmen Review"

Chasing Carmen, the Fairfield CT based Alternative Rock group, has its strongest ingredient in the vocals of Evan D’Abrosca. The band, currently in its third year, struggles with consistency at times, but has some great promise shine through in tracks like “Fake Humanity”. The band has built a strong following and has opened for bands such as Puddle of Mudd, Hinder, and Taproot. Once the band truly hones in on its sound, they could put together a special record. If you like what you hear, check them out on Facebook and Twitter. - Label Recruit

"Joey D'Alessio Bio (Chasing Carmen)"

As a multi-instrumentalist, with experience on Piano, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Upright, Fretless, and Fretted Bass, Joey has made a name for himself in the music world. While studying music as a child, Joey’s brother, Matt introduced him to the magic of Bass. Despite spending years in the realm of the treble clef, Joey made his home holding down the low end. After picking up bass, following in his brother’s footsteps, Joey studied during the summers at Montclair State University, where he took lessons from both Andy McKee (Mingus Big Band) and Mike Richmond. There, Joey had the opportunity to work with great musicians such as Billy Hart (Herbie Hancock), Dave Stryker, and Steve Turre (SNL Band), all before he could even drive! Before leaving high school, he received the Lenore And Sid Wolfe Award For Jazz Ensemble. Joey’s passion for music led him to Fairfield University, where he studied closely with world-renowned bassist, Brian Torff.

During his four years at Fairfield, Joey was the bassist for Fairfield University’s Varsity Band. The band travels with the Fairfield Stags to sporting events. Through this organization Joey has appeared on ESPN2, ESPN U, ESPN3, MSG, MSG2, and MASN. He has played in front of thousands at the MAAC Tournament every year. After polishing his technique, musicianship, and arranging skills, Joey received his degree in Jazz Performance.

At the age of 19, he became the youngest bassist in the world endorsed by Warwick Bass. In the following years, Joey also picked up endorsements by both Mono Cases and Peterson Tuners. As a solo artist, Joey has shared stages with many amazing musicians like Adam Nussbaum (Michael Brecker Quintet), Houston Person (Etta James), Ken Gioffre (Smokey Robinson), Jamie Baum (2008's Flutist of the Year), and David Z (ZO2, Trans-Siberian Orchestra). In 2010, he co-founded the band Chasing Carmen. Throughout their career, the alternative rock outfit has released two studio LPs, and played shows with bands like Puddle of Mudd, Hinder, Saving Abel, Taproot, Hurt, My Darkest Days, Rev Theory, Charm City Devils, and Redlight King. In the summer of 2012, Chasing Carmen headlined their first regional tour across the Northeast, The Angels & Devils Tour, playing everywhere from bars to legendary venues.

"Warwick Basses Endorsed Artists: Joey D'Alessio (Chasing Carmen)"

Joey D’Alessio is an experienced bassist who plays everything from Jazz to Funk to R&B to Rock. He is the bassist and a founding member of Chasing Carmen, a rock band from Fairfield, CT. Joey also plays in a Blues/Funk/R&B band, State Of The Blues. Joey plays in many different projects and has opened for bands such as Hinder, Saving Abel, and My Darkest Days.
Joey has had an exclusive relationship with Warwick basses for his entire musical career. “The first bass I ever played was my brother’s Thumb 5,” he recalls. “Warwick basses are ‘tone chameleons.’ I can get any and every sound I’m looking for with them. I play in many different bands, each with a unique sound of their own. The only way I can do that is with my trusty Warwicks.” Joey lists his main influences on bass as P-Nut, Stuart Zender, Paul Chambers, Anthony Jackson, Hadrien Feraud, and Victor Wooten.
Following the advice of his high school band director, Joey attended the summer program, Jazz Connections at Montclair State University. Under the instruction of bassist Andy McKee (Mingus Big Band), Joey defined his sound and playing techniques. That summer, Joey had the opportunity to play in an ensemble led by trombonist Steve Turre (SNL Band).
All of this experience has come in handy because Joey is currently a Jazz major at Fairfield University. Through the Jazz Ensemble, led by renowned bassist Brian Torff, he had the opportunity to play with Jazz greats such as saxophonist Ken Gioffre (Smokey Robinson) and drummer Adam Nussbaum (Michael Brecker Quintet). Brian Torff is also Joey’s private teacher and mentor. Joey took Brian up on his offer to start teaching at Fairfield University’s Summer Jazz Workshop in 2010.
Joey D’Alessio is also the bassist for Fairfield University’s Pep Band. It has even given him some experience arranging and conducting. The Pep Band plays with the Fairfield Stags at sporting events. Through this organization Joey has appeared on ESPN2, ESPN U, MSG, MSG2, and MASN. “There’s nothing like playing in a packed arena with 10,000 screaming fans.”

"Student and Alumni band Chasing Carmen nominated for award"

Starting a band is a common endeavor for college students. However, it’s a rare group that stays together after graduation.

Chasing Carmen, an alternative rock group, has survived graduation from Fairfield and recently has been nominated for a 2013 New England Music Award (NEMA).

Senior Evan D’Abrosca, Zakk Rogg-Meltzer ’10, Joey D’Alessio ’12 and Peter Sweeney ’11 have been playing together since 2010, and they have played venues like Toad’s Place in New Haven and have opened for famous names such as Saving Abel.

Now Chasing Carmen is being recognized for their work with a nomination in the coveted Best of Connecticut category. As one of five bands in the category, “this nomination means that we are not just another band who met in college,” said D’Alessio. “We are actually being recognized for our hard work,” he added.

The New England Music Awards are presented each year to musicians who live and work in New England. Those honored have established themselves in the region and have contributed to the musical culture in New England.

Over 100 artists and bands have been nominated for categories covering all genres of popular music, including Best Rock Band, Best Blues Band and Best New Act. With each nomination NEMA aims to “celebrate and recognize some of the area’s best musical achievements,” according to their website.

NEMA’s nomination committee consists of representatives from a variety of careers within the music industry including journalists, talent buyers and record label executives. The committee represents the full scope of the music industry, as well as all six New England states. The winner of each category is chosen by popular vote.

Though the New England Music Awards are only in their second year, a win would mean a lot to Chasing Carmen, said D’Alessio. “This [award] would be validation to the fact that we are around to stay,” he said.

The awards show will take place on April 13 at 7 p.m. at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Mass. following The Artists Conference, which will feature guest speakers, discussion panels and other sessions aimed at the independent artists of New England. Tickets to the event are $10 or $15.

The event will be hosted by “The Rock Babe” Suzanne Tonaire and will feature live performances by the Adam Ezra Group and Hot Day at the Zoo, as well as The Alternate Routes and Sarah Blacker.

Currently, Chasing Carmen is in the studio recording their second album. Their album release show will be in June.

"Band Brings Alternative Rock to Campus"

The group — vocalist and lead guitarist Evan D’Abrosca ’13, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Zakk Rogg-Meltzer ’10, bassist Joey D’Alessio ’12 and drummer Pete Sweeney ’11 — may seem like your average group of guys, just jamming together to pass the time. But they’re actually pretty talented and have already made a name for themselves.

Chasing Carmen has been together for two years (with the exception of Pete, who joined about six months ago), and in that time they have released an EP “The Red Door Diaries” and a full-length album “Angels and Devils.”

They’ve played famous venues like Toad’s Place in New Haven and The Webster Theater in Hartford, they have opened for big name bands like Hinder and Saving Abel, and bassist D’Alessio is one of Warwick Basses’ youngest clients ever. Pretty damn cool.

The Mirror: Who writes your music?

Chasing Carmen: Zakk writes the lyrics, though Pete will join in on the next album. All four of us collaboratively write the music, with heavy musical contributions from Joey and Evan.

TM: Do you see yourself continuing with Chasing Carmen after college?

CC: Absolutely. We are continuing to grow as a band and are progressing in ways we couldn’t have imagined at the onset…We are in the process of setting up an East Coast tour this summer and are hoping to play a large summer festival as well…and [we] have just signed a management deal with Monolith Management out of Salt Lake City, Utah. We won’t stop anytime soon.

TM: Who are your artist influences?

CC: I like to say our musical style can be described in one phrase: From grunge to funk, to prog to punk. This takes each of our individual favorite musical styles, and with that we have created a new sound innovation that is uniquely our own. If I had to say bands that we are similar to, I would say Stone Temple Pilots, Audioslave and The Foo Fighters. Rock music just best describes the emotions we feel as a band.

TM: Favorite show you’ve played?

CC: Opening up for Puddle of Mudd and Rev Theory at The Webster Theater. Great crowd (hundreds of people), and they were really digging our music. We had them all singing along by the end of the first chorus. We even had a fill-in drummer, Tom Saporito, for that show, and we were just flawless musically and really felt energized by the crowd. It was a hell of an experience and one that I will never forget.

TM: What do you have to say about your fans?

CC: We love our fans or, as we have dubbed them, our “Chasers.” We have a great local following when we play shows in Connecticut, New York, or Rhode Island, and our online fans are really quite amazing as well. We get messages every day from all over the world…We greatly appreciate the support and would like to thank every single one of our fans.

TM: Music is so important to you because…

CC: It is the only thing that allows us to express ourselves in as vulnerable and powerful a way as it does. Music isn’t just a combination of four different instruments playing different sounds; it is a cohesive, living, breathing entity that is created from four people from different musical backgrounds and different life experiences…Also, chicks dig rock stars, and we find our music to be incredibly badass.

"Chasing Carmen Live at the Levee"

Sometimes the best projects are born through nights spent sitting around with friends, bouncing ideas off of each other.
For Chasing Carmen, a four piece alternative rock band started a Fairfield University, their start came out of such a situation when guitarist/lyricist Zakk Rogg-Meltzer and lead singer Evan D’Abrosca started jamming together with their acoustic guitars. Since then the band grew to include Joey D’Alessio and Nikita Peperni, who has since been replaced by Pete Sweeney.
“We had a good camaraderie and played well off of each other,” said Zakk. ““We have been going strong ever since.”
The band was still stunned that now, two years to the day since the conception of this small project, the Levee steadily packed full of nearly 160 students, waiting patiently for the band to take the stage and celebrate their album release to iTunes and all major music downloading sites.
The first song they played came off of the new album, titled Angels and Devils. The rest of the set included some of their earlier songs, as well as a few covers of other alternative rock bands from which the members draw inspiration.
“We had 160 friends singing along and giving us a standing ovation and encore at the end,” said Zakk. “It was pretty awesome.”
The band has been touring much of the east coast since 2010, slowly growing a following and signing to a management deal. Things are looking up, and they couldn’t be more excited for what else is in store in the future.
“We hope to ultimately get signed to a major label and tour the world. We know those are lofty goals, but we believe they are within reach,” said Zakk. “We plan on going on tour this summer and playing a large festival as well. We look forward to seeing you all out there at our shows. Keep the chase alive.”
The band can be reached at www.chasingcarmen.com, and their next show is March 19 at the Delancy in New York, New York. - Fairfield.edu
