"Cash Grab: Guffaws for a good cause"

Until a few years ago, I never realized people could go to school to hone their funny bones.

And then I learned of Humber College’s comedy writing and performance program. A friend’s son went through it, and one of our nephews, Brandon Trainor, graduated from it last spring.

We got to see the fruits of that education on the weekend, as said nephew and his merry band of misfits – Cash Grab comedy troupe – put on a show in Wallaceburg.

It was a fundraiser for women’s cancer research and took place in the Jeanne Gordon Theatre.

Opening for Cash Grab was local teen band Two Men and a Baby – Objective Unknown minus a guitar player who is away at university. The band’s bass player is Daryn Trainor, Brandon’s younger brother.

It was a very entertaining evening, with some classic rock and hilarious comedy. The laughs portion of the evening was a blend of standup and sketch comedy. Those young comedians are as demented mentally as I am.

I loved it.

Intelligent, at times rude and politically incorrect, influenced obviously by Monty Python’s Flying Circus and The Kids in the Hall, Cash Grab had everyone in attendance laughing out loud for most of their show.

If the troupe returns to C-K in the future, it’s worth checking them out. Who else does a sketch about WAMBO? - Chatham Daily News

Having performed on the stages of Toronto’s Yuk-Yuks, The Second City and Comedy Bar, Cash Grab represents a new generation of Canadian comedy – comedians that actually studied comedy in college. The troupe met while enrolled in Humber College’s Comedy: Writing and Performance program and have been performing together ever since.

Since graduating, the Cash Grabbers have seen their success take off. They were nominated for the prestigious Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award and were selected to compete in the Fresh Meat competition at The Second City. Perhaps, their biggest highlight to date was writing and performing with former Kids in the Hall star, Dave Foley, at the Humber Fresh Faces Show 2012. The troupe is now gearing up for American Idol tryouts in the hopes that they find their big break.
