Broken Factory Windows

"Bright Lights, Bright Lights!" (BFW; 2016)

Okay, this is going to sound weird. But Broken Factory Windows, on "Bright Lights, Bright Lights!," reminds me of a modern metal version of the Dropkick Murphys.
Now that I've written that, it doesn't seem so weird after all. And it's a compliment, by the way, as I am a huge Dropkick Murphys fan. I'm listening to "Bright Lights, Bright Lights!" for the second time through as I'm writing this and the Dropkick Murphys influence is clearly there but the band does something different, something even edgier than the Dropkick dudes, that makes the music even heavier. Take Track 6, "Psychos in Love," for example, with its kickass, punk rock guitar. If that song doesn't get your blood pumping, nothing will. And I love Track 7, "Speak Less," too, with its unique soundscape.
Another website describes Broken Factory Windows as "punk/post-hardcore" and that's probably a better description than mine (but you know how I hate labels). The songs here are fast-paced and furious, with driving guitars, pounding drums and throbbing bass, and the guitar solos come in at just the right time to keep things moving along. The vocals are in-your-face and fit each track perfectly and the way the band merges the rough lead vocals with smoother background choruses only enhances the overall listening experience.

Un groupe qui se présente comme “trois types qui adorent jouer de la musique et aimeraient passer leur vie à ne faire que ça” ne présage pas grand chose de bon. Il y a vingt ans, ces trois gars auraient aimé jammer dans leur garage, animer la fête du village et ils auraient éventuellement financé sur leurs deniers propres une tournée estivale en break Toyota où ils auraient parcouru 2000 kilomètres pour jouer dans d’autres fêtes de village.
Avec les prouesses de la technologie, les groupes de potes locaux ont désormais la possibilité d’essayer de partager leur musique à un cercle plus large que leurs copains même si, dans bien des cas, leurs créations n’intéressent pas grand monde au-delà des limites de leur région.
De l’anonymat au succès il n’y a qu’un pas et même si c’est rarement le seul talent des musiciens qui permet de le franchir, on peut encore se prendre à rêver qu’un parfait inconnu qui sortirait un disque génial serait de facto propulsé sous le feu des projecteurs. En effet, tout groupe mondialement connu a d’abord commencé comme une célébrité régionale. Malheureusement, c’est bien rare, toutes les huîtres ne contenant pas une perle. Les formations d’intérêt moindre, compensent le manque de génie par une bonne dose de motivation et on peut leur reconnaître l’envie d’en découdre et leur capacité à animer la fête du village. C’est déjà pas mal.
Les géorgiens de BROKEN FACTORY WINDOWS sont l’archétype de cette catégorie de petits groupes locaux qui valent le coup en live si vous êtes de passage dans la région mais ne justifient pas que vous traversiez le pays pour les voir jouer. Ils se présentent comme ces trois potes qui aiment jammer ensemble et leur musique leur ressemble. C’est collectif, joyeux, entraînant et pas vraiment méchant. S’ils se revendiquent Post Hardcore, ils ont plus de points communs avec les formations fondatrices du courant (FUGAZI) qu’avec les projets récents qui ont introduit beaucoup d’Emo dans le mélange. Ici, il y a certes un peu de screaming, notamment sur le morceau d’intro plutôt rentre dedans, “A bullet In the head is worth than in the chest”, mais les choses se calment bien vite quand on déroule la tracklist, le chant clair y étant privilégié. Un choix à l’intérêt discutable qui donne à certaines chansons un côté passe partout sans saveur. C’est notamment le cas sur “Here’s to Getting Over you” ou “Polar”.
Les choses intéressantes font leur retour sur le dernier tiers du disque, avec un “Psychos In Love” très Punk et rentre dedans : tempo rapide, rythmique survoltée, batterie à l’avenant, chant rentre-dedans et un joli petit solo de gratte pour faire pont. Certainement l’un des meilleurs morceaux du disque. “Speak Less”, avec sa jolie intro à la gratte marque le retour dans le registre d’ouverture. C’est hargneux, avec un screaming si attachant qu’on se demande bien pourquoi le gang s’essaye aussi au chant clair alors que c’est manifestement dans les cris primaux qu’il est le plus doué. Le disque se termine sur “Surviving 1985”, qui utilise les mêmes ingrédients que le pénultième morceau en développant des ambiances différentes mais tout aussi intéressantes.
L’un dans l’autre, Bright Lights, Bright Lights! est plutôt une bonne surprise. Ce jeune groupe qui se vend si maladroitement sur sa page facebook mérite plus d’attention qu’une bande de potes qui aiment jouer de la musique dans leur garage. Certes BROKEN FACTORY WINDOW n’invente rien, mais dans le registre qu’ils revendiquent, ils proposent une interprétation plus fraîche et sincère que bien des groupes qui se prétendent Post Hardcore sans avoir réellement compris l’essence de ce courant musical. - La Fan De Metal

BFW is a Post-Punk/Post-Hardcore/Hardcore Punk band from Atlanta.Formed by 3 guys who love music and playing their hearts out!So "Here's to getting over you" is definitely a track that totally represent's their musical influences (Small Brown Bike, Hot Water Music, Cat Stevens, Hanson, etc.) and for some reason the vocals reminded me the band "One Less Reason".

Citing influences including Small brown bike, Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate, Hot Water Music, and Jawbreaker, this Atlanta, GA, post-hardcore trio show some serious promise on this their debut album. Yes, there are some pop aspects to the buoyant, ebullient lead guitar lines, but the uptempo rhythm chug has some grit to it, as do the vocals, which are shared by Antony Natale (bass) and Clayton Nichols (guitar).

But then again, there are some real piledrivers: ‘Psychos in Love’ brings the speed-freak thunder of Motorhead combined with the sputum-flecked griminess of The Anti-Nowhere League. It’s not pretty, and nor is it supposed to be.

Over the 8 bruising cuts on ‘Bright Lights, Bright Lights!’ BFW show they’re not short on firepower, and these tracks blister and burn with fury and angst. - Whisperin and hollerin

From Atlanta, GA, Broken Factory Windows show that punk is still alive and kicking in the US. Their song "Polar" from the brand new EP Bright Lights, Bright Lights! is similar to what other punk/pop-punk bands such as Teenage Bottlerocket are putting out these days. Simple riffs, catchy lead vocals, big gang vocals, and singing about good times. This is easily one of the best punk songs I've heard in a while.
