Guest blogger Pär Berglund from Meadow Music returns with three of his Swedish favorites from the past few months, presenting veteran guitar virtuoso Eric Borelius, indierock quartet In These Woods and americana quartet Bring The Mourning On, who all have a track available for free download. I apologize for my late start here on ALL SCANDINAVIAN this year, but now I’m good to go and I kick off with three of my favorites from the past months:

First up is Eric Borelius, who may serve as a nice contrast to all the new young, Swedish upcoming indiepop bands. Veteran and guitar virtuoso Borelius recently released his eleventh album ‘The World We Know’, which is an album full of great compositions and melodies in his own mix of pop/jazz/folk music. Check out ‘This Island’ in the player and download it with a Right Click + Save As here!

Next we head over to the indierock band In These Woods (photo), who released their eponymous debut EP in December (stream it in full on Bandcamp). Their dense, big sound and lush guitars just grabbed me by the arm and dragged me into the songs. Not just a great sound, but also great, carefully crafted songs. A band I will certainly follow in the future. Here’s ‘Bear’, and if you like it then download it with a Right Click + Save As here!

And finally, we cross over to yet another facet on the musical prism and travel across the Atlantic Sea with americana outfit Bring The Mourning On. Dark, alternative country they call it, and it’s nice songs in a crowded genre, where Henning Pettersson’s mourning vocals help the band’s music to stand out. ‘Let The Battle Begin’ is in the player and it’s also available for free download with a Right Click + Save As here!

Bring the Mourning On brings us to the US and to the country music areas where Neil Young spent a lot of time in during the seventies. Dark, alternative country with a hint of rock, the band says about their music, which I think is a good description.

The sound feels classic and Henning Pettersson show the right suffering in his voice; listen especially to the song “Let the Battle Begin” here below, a song that has a lot of what you could ask from the genre.

Bring The Mourning On är aktuella med den nya skivan Going Going Gone som nu finns på Spotify och snart också på iTunes.

Hur har arbetet med skivan varit?
Förra året var en enda lång väntan på att skivan skulle bli klar, säger Sebastian Axelsson och förklarar att första pressningen blev feltryckt, ja hela processen med skivan har varit mycket olycksdrabbad. Producenten försvann till exempel mystiskt under pågående arbete. Det visade sig senare att han legat på sjukhus i tre månader. Producent nummer två tog vid och hans förhållande kraschade kort därefter. Han förklarade då vänligt men bestämt att han var alldeles för olycklig för att kunna fortsätta jobba med skivan. Han fann en ny kärlek i slutet av månaden, men då hade producent nummer tre tagit över arbetet. Även han försvann under mystiska omständigheter. Efter detta valde sångaren Henning Petersson att mixa och mastra själv.

Erika Schröder känner att det nog ligger en förbannelse över arbetet med skivan. Skivan skulle ju kunna gå upp i rök, säger hon och stryker med fingrarna över omslaget som för att försäkra sig om att den faktiskt är verklig.

Hur ser framtiden ut?
2011 har startat bra för Bring The Mourning On. Under januari släpptes skivan Going Going Gone och Henning agerade förband till Golden Kanine i Tyskland. 16-19 februari åker hela bandet på en miniturné till Tyskland med spelningar i Berlin, Leipzig och Erfurt. En EP är planerad att spelas in i april månad och nya inspelningslokaler blir upSweden Malmös studio.

Vad kan ni berätta om de nya låtarna?
Låtarna som kommer blir annorlunda. Vi går lite tillbaka till våra rötter, mer akustiskt. Och så vill vi ha lite skitigare ljud denna gång, berättar Erika medan Robert tillägger: skitigare, varmare, skäggigare ljud.

Bring On The Mourning

To be amongst the best in the world of music rarely means to be among the largest. Bring On the Morning is one of those bands whose quality is on par with the sold-out arenas. But the only time its course and if there is any logic in the business so will the men and women in the band soon to be everyone's property. Come and enchanted by far the best altcountryband southern Sweden, which also gives their music an extra dimension live. It would be a misconduct of life to miss this gig.
