Bio
R&B vocalist and songwriter Brendan Philip's talents haven't always been so clear. Born and raised in Toronto, a city known for it's vast and diverse culture made for a artistic journey that has brought the singer to this point. Heavily influenced by Eno, David Byrne and the experimental and soulful collectives of Sun-Ra Orkestra and Parliment Funkadelic, Brendan Philip's miscegenation of these artistic juggernauts with the sounds of contemporary musicians who sing of sex and sin has created a unique sound that can be said is the genesis of a completely new sound for a young black artist living and working in North America.
Having already honed his live performance skills opening for Bilal, Shad K, and MIA, this turn of his project now features his long time friend and only recent collaborator Jahmal Tonge of The Carps/Thunderheist/MSTRKRFT fame. This union represents the nexus of what will become a sound that shapes contemporary r&b and hip hop into the future. Jahmal Tonge's productions dance between bombastic rap inspired beats, with the tempered chaos of his punk rock influences. All of this, and Brendan Philip's already proven abominable song writing prowess marks a land shift in R&B and Pop music.
With many releases slated for 2013 on the newly minted Fake Art Records label out of Toronto, Brendan Philip is here.
