"BredCrumbs – All Make Believe"

Exclusive Interview

Tell us about where you are from and how you go to this position today?
BredCrumbs is from Miami and was formed in the summer of 2008. The five members of BredCrumbs are Zay, Big Matt, Jesse, PinoGRILLO, and KZP. Zay plays the keys and brings his eclectic musical background to the table each time we sit down to write a song. Zay throws his hip-hop, funk, r&b, and soul background into the BredCrumbs mix. Matt beats the piss out of the drums and can play any rhythm on the planet. He basically orchestrates every hit in all of our songs. Matt grew up mostly around funk and gospel music, so you can definitely hear that in his playing. Jesse is the brains behind the operation. Not only is he a disgusting bass player and musical mind but he’s also in charge of our entire technical and sonic set up. Jesse also likes to pepper our songs with some extremely intense, creepy, brilliant chords. PinoGRILLO is in charge of the lyrical content and poetry of the tunes. He also collaborates with the rest of the guys to decipher melodies and the rhythmic progressions of the music. KZP is the lead guitar player and the rocker! He brings that heavy distorted attitude to the BredCrumbs sound. As a unit, BredCrumbs works diligently together to create an innovatively evocative music.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see?

Bredcrumbsmusic.com is where we post our most recent news updates. You can also watch our “All Make Believe” music video on the page. In addition, we are currently working on recording and releasing new tunes. We just played a live show for Miami Music Television which will be airing on ABC throughout the South Florida region on Saturday nights. Essentially, you can expect to see BredCrumbs playing out and creating a unique musical experience for our audience.

Tell us about one of the biggest challenges you had to face in the industry?

The biggest challenge BredCrumbs has faced is people trying to cubby hole our sound into one genre. Conceptually we try not to lock ourselves into one particular style. With influences reflecting the various backgrounds of our members, BredCrumbs represents a mixture of old school hip hop, R&B, pop, soul, alternative rock, funk, blues, and conscious rap. For us, music isn’t just about playing notes on a page, but more about creating a sonic “experience” that fans will remember.

What was some of the biggest setbacks in your career and how did you bounce back?

As a band we do not look at difficulties as setbacks or problems. We view issues as inconveniences that only need patience, time, and effort to eventually work out.

What are some things artist need to be careful of?

Every artist needs to have the ability to entertain a persons’ ideas without accepting them. It’s important to take a persons’ opinion seriously but you can drive yourself crazy trying to please everyone. Believe in yourself and in what you are doing, then set it out for the world to see.

What are the best ways to sell your products and to promote as artist?

The most effective way, we’ve found, to promote our music and sell our product is at live gigs. Once an audience has experienced and realizes they can connect our music, they become more willing to support our mission. In addition, we have been able to sell our product on our website and other online mediums.

"BredCrumbs: Leaving a Musical Trail One Song at a Time"

You won’t find BredCrumbs on your kitchen table, couch, or bed. You will find these crumbs here at the ‘Steez, leading you to get lost in their world of genius musical blends.

This 305 collaboration fuses genres from old school hip hp, R&B, pop, alternative rock, funk, blues and conscious rap. Everyone with ears and good taste in music should fall under the spell of their sounds. ( I did.)

Whether it’s at Transit, Jazid, or Tobacco Road, BredCrumbs is out to change, transform, and influence all of the 305.

I got to interview these guys and I dug in a little deeper beyond their vocals and instrumental melodies. There’s nothing not to love about them. I promise.

BredCrumbs: BredCrumbs is a musical brainchild that was conceived between two friends, Zay and Pino, one day while working in retail together. Pino explained to Zay that he had a passion for writing poetry and songs but needed help with the music and production. As a result of their lengthy conversations, Zay told Pino that he plays various instruments, mainly the piano. With a leap of faith they began to collaborate and write songs together.

The BredCrumbs that exists today came together with the help of Zay’s contacts. Zay and Pino wrote songs together for over a year before the band was assembled. They spoke several times about expanding the “BredCrumbs Project” until he finally got in contact with his old friends Jesse and Big Matt. After meeting a couple of times, they all decided it would be best to continue working on their own. It wasn’t until two years later that they reconvened and began to collaborate more exclusively; this time with KZP as our lead guitarist.

The name BredCrumbs was taken from the children’s story Hansel and Gretel. In the story the children disobey their parents and go into the forest leaving bread crumbs to find their way back home. Although, there are many complications that transpire in the original story. The name BredCrumbs is symbolic for never forgetting our way home and always staying in touch with our roots.

Antisteez: Who are the five members of the band and what is their influence on the band’s sound?
BredCrumbs: The five members of the band are Zay, Big Matt, Jesse, Pino, and KZP.

Zay plays the keys and brings his eclectic musical background to the table each time we sit down to write a song. I would say Zay throws his hip-hop, funk, R&B, and soul background into the BredCrumbs mix.

Matt beats the piss out of the drums and can play any rhythm on the planet. He is also an incredible musician (For example, he’s an excellent keyboard player.) He basically orchestrates every hit in all of our songs. Matt grew up mostly around funk and gospel music. You can hear some of that in his playing.

Jesse is the brains behind the operation. Not only is he a disgusting bass player and musical mind, but he’s also in charge of our entire technical and sonic set up. Jesse also likes to pepper our songs with some extremely intense, creepy, and brilliant chords.

Pino is in charge of the lyrical content and poetry of the songs. He also collaborates with the rest of the guys to decipher melodies and rhythmic progressions of their music.

KZP is the lead guitar player and the rocker! He brings that heavy distorted attitude to the BredCrumbs sound.

Antisteez: You say your influences vary from Prince, Korn, Bob Marley, John Mayer, Frank Sinatra, Lupe Fiasco, Miles Davis, Journey and even John Lennon, but how has the 305 influenced your music?
BredCrumbs: The 305 has had a huge influence on all of us. We grew up here with the mixture of cultures from across the globe. That in itself gave rise to who we are as individuals and as a band. Although BredCrumbs’ music isn’t exactly the type of music being played in the Miami music scene; that never stops them from pushing harder and harder so when someone hears their music, their hearts, minds, and souls should never be the same.

Antisteez: Are you dropping an album soon?
BredCrumbs: BredCrumbs is actually in the works right now recording nine new tracks to add to the long list of memories people can take him with them from their gigs.

Antisteez: What song is the most-fun to perform for you guys?
BredCrumbs: Every song is fun to perform for many of different reasons. There are songs that different members in the band like to play more than others. For example: KZP like “Rock Ya Body,” Jesse likes “Sally Falcon, ” Zay likes “Leaving Again,” Pino likes “All Make Believe,” and Big Matt likes “Last Chance.”

Antisteez: Tell us about your video for All Make Believe. Who directed it? Who came up with the concept?
BredCrumbs: The concept for the All Make Believe video was a result of the band collaborating with director Danny Pino. Alex Merkin edited and assistant directed the video as well.

In the video, Pino is chasing a girl who is the personification of one’s dreams. He sees her everywhere but she disappears as soon as he approaches. He becomes infatuated with her, but he can’t seem to get his arms around her. Just like any dream that is worth while, you need to chase it and search for it before you can realize it.

Antisteez: Tell us one of the funniest moments/embarrassing ones you have experienced as a band.
BredCrumbs: BredCrumbs’ funniest moment had to be at a warehouse gig. The electricity went out in the middle of a song (Sally Falcon) so Pino and Big Matt had to continue the song tribal style, just drums and vocals. When the electricity came back a couple of minutes later, the band seamlessly jumped right in. Who knows, maybe the crowd thought it was part of the show. Through the rest of the song all the band could do is look around at each other and laugh thinking, “Did that really just happen?”

BredCrumbs is food for the musical soul, so check out their Facebook, Myspace, and even follow them on Twitter. Listen to their sounds and don’t forget to leave some crumbs behind in case you get lost in their music and can’t remember your way back!
