Boraj’s latest EP La Costa opens with airy soundscapes, slowly building with voices and guitar, only to quickly move to a quiet, minimal state. It’s a nice microcosm of the Chilean chamber pop band’s meditative and precise sound. Singing mostly in Spanish with the exception of a couple well-thought covers, Boraj take the roots of Chilean folk traditions, but through a post rock and indie pop filter. Featuring strings, bass and drums on La Costs’s longer tracks “Andar” and “La Costa”, the band proves consistently expressive and carefully crafted songwriters. Boraj is very purposeful with all of their instrumentation, both organic and electronic as in the sparse, ghostly title track. While there are some strong ideas on the band’s debut EP, Cambiar De Aire released in January 2015, La Costa is a marked improvement and a beautiful listen even at least than fifteen minutes. - Operation Every Band

At first, they seemed like students at the nearby Universidad Católica with their torn-up sneakers, jeans, loose-fitting t-shirts and wavy hair. The intricacy and emotional power of their music, however, indicated that they were more than just kids having a jam session.

BORAJ is a Santiago-based group that usually consists of 7 distinct musicians who play a variety of instruments, including string bass, violin, xylophone, and saxophone. The group combines a variety of sounds and timbres to present a complex, and often experimental, musical smorgasbord.
According to founders and childhood friends Felipe Markmann and Nico Rosenberg, the group BORAJ was born from moments of dissatisfaction with the capitalist system. These feelings of rebellion gave them a driving ambition to take action against the conservative and traditionalist aspects of Chilean society.

Markmann says that their music is an attempt to “express the soul's desire to find a higher power in this physical realm we know as reality.”

To show this through their music, BORAJ uses distortion and echoes to create an almost ethereal ambience in their songs, accompanied by the “organic” sound created from the use of real instruments. This instrumentation creates a uniquely ambient soundscape that walks the line between the worldly and the otherworldly.
Both Markmann and Rosenberg agree that the inspiration for this distinctive sound comes from albums such as Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” Jonsi’s “We Bought a Zoo,” and Alt-J’s “An Awesome Wave.”

In the band’s newest EP, “Cambiar de Aire,” the band's instrumental and compositional talents are the focus. The voice is utilized as just another instrument - it never truly takes the forefront on the songs, allowing the rest of the band to shine. Songs like “Nudos y Torres” and “Buen Viaje”, attract the listener’s attention to the use natural keyboards, electronic synths, and a mix of both acoustic and electric guitar reminiscent of the post-rock low-fi movement.
When composing, Markann and Rosenberg say that they try to convey a message of spiritual compassion and vulnerability. To them, creating music is a way of trying to define what the word “soul” really means in a materialistic world that they believe makes the answer harder to find.
BORAJ are currently working with Eduardo Parra (one of the founders of the Chilean group Los Jaivas) on his new LP, which is due by the end of this year.

Entrevistamos a Nico Rosenberg, integrante de la banda Boraj. Nos contará acerca de su música, historia y estilos que han recogido para formar un nivel de música muy bien elaborado y único en el escenario local.

¿Cómo nació la idea de tener esta banda? ¿Cómo se conocieron?

– La idea de tener esta banda estaba dentro de cada uno de nosotros, tal vez no con el nombre pero sí con la decisión de formar un proyecto artístico que represente nuestros deseos de generar un cambio propio como también un cambio en nuestro entorno.

El proyecto surgió alrededor de cinco años atrás en la pieza del “Feli”. Las composiciones empezaron a hacer pequeña su pieza y se necesitaron más manos para llevarlas a cabo, es por esto que se necesitó formar una banda de 7 músicos. Yo, Nico Rosenberg, ayudé a Felipe a formar este equipo, entre amigos del colegio y también con personas que conocimos de forma aleatoria o por medio de sin cronicidad.

¿Cuáles han sido sus principales influencias al momento de componer?

– Respecto a las influencias se pueden mencionar infinitos nombres ya que no sólo nos influenciamos en la música, sino desde las noticias hasta intelectuales como Gabriel García Márquez y Carl Gustav Jung. Pero en el ámbito musical el listado es gigante, tanto soundtracks de películas o bandas como Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Alt-J y Yann Tiersen son proyectos que nos mueven para seguir creando. También Brian Eno y Steve Reich son importantes a la hora de producir.

¿Cómo ha sido la promoción de su EP “Cambiar de Aire” y posteriormente de su reciente canción “Mía”?

– Nuestro primer EP no tuvo mucha promoción, sólo nos dedicamos a difundirlo nosotros mismos por Internet. Un semestre después de haberlo lanzado grabamos nuestro primer vídeo clip “Nudos y Torres”, que ayudó bastante en la difusión.

En tanto con la canción Mía, hicimos lo mismo: un vídeo grabado en vivo que apunta a simplificar nuestra música y mostrar que no existen géneros musicales.

Hemos tenido la suerte de producir nosotros mismos los vídeos ya que al trabajar con amigos directores los costos no han sido grandes.

¿Cómo ha sido la recepción de la gente así como también del medio musical?

La recepción ha sido bastante buena, en las últimas dos tocatas hemos llenado los locales y los auditores ya están cantando los temas!

En tanto al medio musical, no ha pasado mucho pero Eduardo Parra de los Jaivas nos ha ayudado bastante con eso ya que ahora estamos en su nuevo sello discográfico, Sello Parra. En esta alianza esperamos que el nombre de la banda se dé a conocer no sólo en Santiago.

¿De qué forma nace en ustedes la composición de su música? ¿a quién se debe la mayor parte del proceso?

– El proceso de composición tanto musical como lírico parte por el Feli. Luego él me muestra el tema, lo ayudo a maquetiarlo y a comenzar a arreglarlo, después se presenta este demo a la banda y de ahí se rehace con más energía.

¿Cómo consideran ustedes su estilo o qué clase de sonido buscan al incorporar tal cantidad de instrumentos (guitarra acústica y eléctrica, saxo, bombo chilote, etc.) y estilos tan diversos (Indie, música experimental, folk, electrónica, post-rock, etc.) ¿Cómo logran mezclar todo esto?

– Esta es siempre la pregunta más difícil porque las palabras se hacen pequeñas para expresar tal combinación. Ante esto, le llamamos a nuestra música por un “sonido plural” ya que no buscamos encasillarnos con un género y mucho menos limitarnos. Creo que somos capaces de mezclar todo esto porque al final la música es sólo una, todo es sólo una canción y solo hay que sentirla.

¿En qué se encuentran hoy como banda? ¿En miras de sacar su primer cd?

– Hoy en día nos encontramos preparando un nuevo EP llamado “La Costa”, que propone un nuevo concepto, tal como lo fue “Cambiar de Aire”. A diferencia, este material será grabado profesionalmente ya que “Cambiar de Aire” nació y se grabó en nuestras habitaciones. Además, seguimos preparándonos para seguir tocando el siguiente semestre.

¿Cuáles son sus proyecciones?

– Tal vez sonará muy ambicioso pero nuestras metas son grandes. A final de este año esperamos que BORAJ quede como una banda consolidada, para que el 2016 sea un año de presentar nuestra música a lo largo del país y quién sabe, también en otras tierras.

¿Donde los podemos ver en el futuro?

Vamos a tocar el 15 de agosto en la aldea del encuentro, están todos invitados.
