It’s very rare that I put my stamp of approval on an artist, but I think BOOGNIGHTS has it. He sent me his mixtape the other day and I gave it a listen and was immediately impressed. BOOGNIGHTS has a dope flow and already sounds very polished as an artist. BOOG comes out of Spring Valley, NY. Check out the mixtape, you want be dissappointed.

First-time featuree BOOGNIGHTS may have hit the scene with his debut street album this past March, but he’s hardly new to rap – in fact, the Spring Valley, N.Y. native’s been honing his skills on the mic since age nine. It’s hard to catch developing talent that early but, in any case, we figured that now was The Time to jump on the buzzmaking emcee’s bandwagon. This newly-released promo single, a remixed version of a track originally featured on compilation mixtape Student of the Culture, is a head-nodding introduction to BOOGS’ retro-informed yet forward-looking style. Beatsmith J-Killah (a.k.a. GOLD) switches out his icy original boardwork for a bouncier but equally laid-back funk-soul instrumental as the artist showcases his confident mic presence, brushing off the gimmick rappers and advising listeners, “If you’re gonna believe in something, [you’d] best believe in me.” BOOGNIGHTS fresh style is sure to earn him points in the Booth, but will it catch the label execs’ ears? For now, we can only speculate…

Here at RefinedHype we believe in quality over quantity, and that’s why I believe in BOOGNIGHT‘s new mixtape “The ARTiste.” A man with a smooth, New York influenced flow and no shortage of quality production, BOOGNIGHTS definitely deserves some attention from your eardrums. There are thousands of rappers out there, but very few artists…or ARTistes.
Plus, thanks to his influence I’m considering rocking my name in all capital letters from now on (NATHAN S does look impressive). Download link is below the tracklisting. Enjoy.

It may be about four days too late to really be yelling “Cheers!”, but if you’re like me, New Year’s Eve is far from the only day on which you raise a glass (drinking is bad kids). Determined to make the celebratory feel of NYE last all year long is BOOGNIGHTS - who we last heard spitting an ill DJBooth freestyle - and to make that dream a reality he’s released the aptly named Cheers! An acoustically oriented track that uses soft rock group One Republic’s Good Life as its base, Cheers! is exactly the positively oriented track we need to kick off a happy and successful 2010, thanks in no small part to BOOG’s smooth as silk rhyme style. I’ve got no doubt that some folks will find the song a little too soft for their tastes, but that will just leave more glasses for the rest of us to toast with. For more celebratory tracks like this be sure to check out the new mixtape Reupspot Presents: New Slang, available online now. - Nathan S.

With so much music coming out these days and so many artists vying for attention, it can be hard to separate what is worthwhile from what's worthless. After hearing the first few bars from Boognights from Spring valley, New York, it is clear that he is one of the few worthwhile artists that you should really be checking for. If there was one word to sum of Boog, it would be creative. Kicking a thought-provoking narrative that features a portion of the chorus from Genesis' "In the Air Tonight", this is a song that chronicles his life and the experiences that have lead him to this moment in his life. With Boog recently dropping The ARTiste" Mixtape, it is clear this is an MC on his grind that will open eyes with the stories he has to tell and the rhymes that he actually lives.

Boognights admits to Yo! Raps how frustrating it is when garbage rappers get signed and how unfair it is when true talent goes unrecognized. We must say that we know how much he desires the Rap game, but we supposedly read somewhere that he once gave up and quit cold turkey due to lack of interest in the music industry returning three absent years later. We asked for an explanation and this is what we got: "That's true. I was up at college at the time during my senior year focusing a lot on my major and music. Out of nowhere I just lost the love for it. Leading up to it I saw a lot of people starting to rap just for the hell of it. I started to think like Hip-Hop is getting real corny right now. Even in the music industry garbage rappers are getting deals. I think back and say to myself that maybe I should have just taken a stand. Worked harder on my music and get myself known. But it's nothing that I regret, because I believe everything happens for a reason and I'm here now even better and back at it full throttle."

Bio
Any emcee who's entering the game with his head on straight knows that respecting your elders can be an instrumental tool to success. Youngsters routinely cite fallen soldiers like Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. as chief influences toward their love for music.
But for Spring Valley, NY emcee BOOGNIGHTS, it all started with his friend's older brother, Ambush.
"I always loved music, but when I saw how my older friend would put his music together, it was like, 'Wow, he sounds just like the people on the radio at the time. He sounds real good,'" BOOGNIGHTS remembers. "Me and his brother were always bothering him, like, 'We want to learn this.' He's like, 'OK, I'm going to show you how.'"
Ambush commenced to show the pair of nine-year-olds how to write rhymes: everything from hooks and lyrics to song format and how to record with two cassettes. While BOOG and his friend would consistently make songs, Ambush would just as consistently dismiss them—that is, until BOOG walked into Ambush's room and caught him dancing to the pair's song over Cappadonna's "Black Boy" instrumental.
"With his approval stamp on it, that was my first achievement," BOOG says.
BOOG would expand from what he learned. He honed his flow and his pen game throughout high school, but it wasn't until Ambush unexpectedly died that he decided to take music seriously.
"I decided I wanted to get better to be as good as him," BOOG says. "To live his legacy on."
BOOGNIGHTS studied graphic design at Western Connecticut State University, and substituted cassette tapes and punchlines with studio equipment and purpose. He eventually started booking shows, and his songs got play in area clubs. Things were going well for BOOGNIGHTS ' burgeoning career, until he suddenly decided to quit due to disinterest in the rest of the industry.
"When I started and I was doing it, a lot of people wasn't rapping," BOOG remembers. "That's when I sort of fell back, when people started rapping like it was the thing to do. I felt like it just got corny, so I stopped doing it."
He stuck with his decision for three years, focusing on a career around his Bachelor's in Art from WCSU. But after reminding himself of the promise to his friend's legacy and realizing his own talents, BOOGNIGHTS resumed where he left off.
"I feel like I got 100 times better, and I didn't write the whole three years till my first track," he says. "I guess I was building up all that aggression, or whatever it was."
Listening to his music now, he doesn't sound like an emcee that's only a year back into recording. BOOG doesn't only have a ginsu-sharp delivery and lyrics for days; he displays the lost East Coast swagger that cemented the likes of Diplomats and Fabolous. "Propane" sees him going in with punchline-heavy bars over triumphant horns, while "I Think She Knows" sees him effortlessly tying in a verse on-topic with Justin Timberlake's "Lovestoned." Southern DJs Lady T and Elementz have featured him on their latest mixtapes, and with his own The ARTiste debut mixtape, he's taking matters into his own hands.
"I love music, I've got real good talent, so why not?" BOOG says. "I don't want to regret anything later, like, 'I should have tried it.' If you have a talent, you should give it a shot."
Ambush would be proud.
