"Speedy Ortiz, Bonavox Shred Grammy Amplifier Showcase at Fun Fun Fun Fest"

The final day of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015 was a chilly one. But that didn’t hold back the crowds for the last showcase hosted by Grammy Amplifier, a Hyundai Music Initiative, at the venue that used to be Red 7 on East 7th Street. The theme of the show — which began earlier than the listed set time because it was Sunday, after all — was pure rock. Easing the audience into the concert was pop-rock band Bonavox, who won last year’s competition. The group’s folksy anthems turned the venue into a mini-dance party. There was even a mashup of the slow “Voice of the Ocean,” with just vocals, acoustic guitar and plinky mandolin, and the high rolling sounds of “High and Low.”

"Conheça Um Dos Vencedores Do Grammy U"

"Bonavox EP "Old School Pop Rock""

There is a huge pool of bands coming from L.A trying to reach Hollywood’s fame and fortune, but few manage to climb high and fast enough as Bonavox. Bonavox has existed for around one year and they are now touring with Allan Stone in Vegas with their first released, self-titled EP, Bonavox. It all started when they won the U-Grammy Award with over 5000 contributors involved.

The EP has its influence from the British-pop and the arena-rock genre, but does also have a taste of Coldplay’s “X&Y” and U2’s “Rattle and Hum” meal. Even though the EP screams indie-pop, it delivers pretty neat-distorted guitars too, which 2014 needs in this hectic EDM-era. The songs of the EP sounds “very easy” to listen to and that are maybe one the good reasons why the band has moved so fast, so far. The information is narrowed down, the mix is round and soft, and the music is pretty authentic. They really show a high interest in examining human relationships with the world and not themselves as the new “stars”, trying to “inspire hope within the individual listener,” while blending, finally, simple analog instruments such as: acoustic piano/guitars, electric, drum-kit, and bass.

It seems like their goal is to write something about a specific moment and deliver it through a song. As to say, the context is simple, but also interpretable, which is one of the big requirements to try to resonate, with a potential international audience, successfully. So, the music itself aims and tries to find a spot in the market for everyone to listen to, a one-size-fits-all what I would call. Inspirational spontaneous melodies (with no overworked counterpoint), neat instrumentation, and personal lyrics, is maybe the way-to-go. But if you never listen to rock/pop, preferable “ beach/west coast” rock/pop soundy, maybe this is just another album for you. Considering the bands speed with expanding audience and liking the west coast rock/pop music, maybe this is just the album for you. Perhaps we are not looking for an innovative rock/pop band, but its achievements is worth paying attention to and maybe something we need to hear today, in order to bring back the old fashion. - The Grain Music

Bio

Bonavox is a five-piece pop/rock band from Los Angeles, CA. Founded in 2013 the band released their first album in 2014 and has toured with recording artist Allen Stone. Bonavox was also named the 2014 winner of the Grammy Amplifier Competition by David Guetta. Their charismatic stage presence, paired with their take on modern British pop/rock, makes every live appearance by Bonavox an unforgettable event.

Bonavox started as the result of a serendipitous jam session at Los Angeles College of Music in 2013 where the band started recording their first EP soon after. In this self-titled EP, Bonavox has assembled a collection of carefully crafted songs that portray passion and energy through simplistic, but powerful blends of acoustic guitar, piano and authentic vocals into their arena-level rock that draws influences from U2, Radiohead, Carpark North and others. Their goal is to write a song for each moment, with the hope that their sounds can lift spirits and change mindsets – inspiring hope within the individual listener. The diversity of their backgrounds finds synthesis in their music, with songs that resonate with an international audience and connect to the universal struggles of human emotion.

In 2014, Bonavox was selected as one of the three winners of the Grammy’s “Amplifier Center Stage” competition. Judges such as Hunter Hayes, Kendrick Lamar, Arianna Grande and Robert Glasper picked their song “Fallen Angels” from over 5,000 contributions, which gave them the opportunity to perform at SXSW. They also toured in support of Allen Stone in September 2014 for a limited number of tour dates on the West Coast.

Bonavox is currently writing and recording a new album to be released in 2016.
