Last but certainly not least, I spent some moments listening to a young man by the name of Blake Carrington. This young brother is as gracious as he is talented. His debut release is called “Be A Man”.

Talk about getting back to “Real” R & B. This CD will let you know that real music is on its way back with Blake as a serious contender. Blake gives you several octaves of his voice and puts his soul into each song. He is no stranger to the music world. He has opened for Neyo, Keyshia Cole and Ciara to name a few. Blake, executive produced this project and in my opinion, he did a great job. I totally enjoyed this listening experience. My picks from “Be A Man” are “It’s over” and “Mellonie”.

Music LLC, presents A Dynasty Affair, Friday, May 6th, 2011, 6:00pm to 9:30pm at Covet Lounge 137 E 55th & Lexington ave. He has also been featured on Funk Master Flex’s Certified-gold Vol. II Mixed Tape (Loud Records), Michelob Freestyle, and tracks from Pharoahe Monch, AG Andre the Giant, Greg Nice / Smooth B, Large Professor, Camp Lo, Genard Parker, Jesse West, and DJ Premier. Carrington also completed production on in-house projects with notable producers Darren Lighty and Eddie F, Kenny Smoove, Lord Finesse, Sean (158) Devereaux, Houston B., Diamond D (of DITC) and DJ Kid Capri—with whom he toured in 2005 and 2006.

In recent years, Carrington has also established a huge following in Europe at the famed Dijon Dance Festival in Dijon, France with DJ Icy-E from Germany, and in London and Spain with hip-hop artists Wu Tang Clan, Big Daddy Kane, and CL Smooth.

I was on MySpace a couple of weeks ago looking for some new music when I accidentally clicked on the wrong name and went to Blake Carrington’s page. Now I must admit, it’s not that I’m not into R&B, because I usually tend to listen to different music. What I came to find out is that Blake Carrington creates different music. His voice is a mix between Sam Cooke and a young Stevie Wonder. The music on his album Traveling Man is slick and tends to ebb and flow with perfect timing. The singer songwriter even finds a way to incorporate a trumpet into a street R&B song. While on his page, I found that he was playing in lower Manhattan and decided to check if this guy could pull it off live.



Upon entering the stage, the first thing he does is put on a brand new pair of white Nikes– right out of the box! He then announces, “I got to be crispy when I hit the stage.â€? Carrington went into his song “Shot Up,â€? and he was singing so hard that I thought the veins in neck were going to burst all over the crowd surrounding the small circular stage at the Remote Lounge. I was pleased to find that his voice is as strong live as it is on record. It was great to see an artist go from velvet smooth tones into soul-sharing chaos. My only complaint was that this particular showcase only allowed him to play two songs. It would have been great to watch a performer like this and experience the smokey five o’clock in the morning jazz vocals until early hours of the morning.



After the show I talked to Carrington and asked him a few of questions.

Tom Duffy: Who are you inspired by?

Blake Carrington: My main influences are my grandmother, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, people that have that “gut� sound.

TD: Why do you feel the need or want to make music?

BC: I need to make music because it’s an escape from the trials and tribulations that we all as a people go through on a daily basis. And it grounds me, and makes me a better person.

TD: You have some pretty deep lyrics. Are your songs personal?

BC: I would say that 95 percent of my music is personal. You have to draw from within to make the truest form of art, but there are times when I take the situation someone is in and I put that into my music.

Malcolm X Abram: Howard Hewett coming home
Buchtel graduate will join other alumni at Turkey Day Jam in downtown Akron

For 13 years, alumni of Akron's Buchtel High School have been gathering around the Thanksgiving holiday to commiserate with fellow Griffins past and present and boogie into the night at the annual Turkey Day Jam — All Class Reunion.

The Turkey Jam once again returns to the John S. Knight Center on Saturday, and this year's entertainment lineup will feature WZAK (93.1-FM) personality Kym Sellars, class of 1984, and actor Leland Jones, who has appeared in Tyler Perry's House of Payne. The music will be provided by two generations of home-grown smooth R&B crooners: Blake Carrington and Howard Hewett.

From his home in Harlem, N.Y., Carrington, has been building his career the old-fashioned way, independently releasing an album, Traveling Man, and a mix tape, The First R&B Street Soul Mix-Tape Vol. I. He has worked and recorded with artists such as Kid Capri and DJ Premier and has performed his contemporary R&B stylings as the opening act for Ne-Yo, Jagged Edge and Keyshia Cole.

Hewett, became a famous singer shortly after he left Akron for Los Angeles and hooked up with Shalamar, featuring Soul Train dancers Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel. Shalamar had a string of R&B/disco hits in the late 1970s and early '80s including The Second Time Around, A Night to Remember, Make That Move and the Hewett co-written and ''Quiet Storm'' staple For the Lover in You.

Hewett went solo in 1986 and had a string of solo hits, including I'm for Real, Stay and Say Amen.
