Something a bit different for me. To be honest, I’m not a huge funk or hip-hop fan (and these guys are rather surprisingly both), but I’ll make an exception for a band this good. Somerville based trio Billy Wine refer to themselves as “funk hip hop/instrumental” – sometimes they just jam out on their own, and other times they’re joined by a rapper. Broken limbs, eviction, and a nearly fatal car accident are only some of the unfortunate events that marred what was to be the beginnings of Billy Wine. Catching eyes and sounds from across the room at a late night Allston house party turned groove session in 2009, these three young musicians knew it was their fate to write together.
In the time since, "funk, swagger masters" Billy Wine have brought their brand of rhythm n' groove to venues throughout Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston. Whether it's firing up the crowd at the Middle East's Funk Friday, turning rock concerts into dance parties or just laying it down on the street for the hell of it, Billy Wine brings the music that makes people move.
