Sweden's Billion Dollar Babies have released a four song CD that sounds very much like it could have been recorded between about 1989 and 1992. The opener "Nineteent nintie four" is a mid-tempo, slightly gritty track that reminds me musically of a cross between Skid Row and early LA Guns. This song plunges ahead and serves well enough as an energetic opener. The second song "Restless Minds" slows things down some and the build-up plus the radio friendly choruses have me thinking of late 1980's Aeromsith. The title track is up next and the band pick up the pace from the previous track, but this one also reminds me of late 80's Aerosmith. This might be the tightest track on the album though as everything falls into place very well here. The closer "We don't live forever" storms on with with a basic, but catchy main riff. This one might be the closest the band comes to establishing their own sound. It does sound very much like it could have been done back in hard rock's prime, but it's supremely solid. They move the pace around with ease and they handle the whole song with a great deal of flair and a good sense of detail. The Billion Dollar Babies are another new rock band from Sweden. Well, Sweden rocks, what can I say?
These guys really know how to play their instruments as the guitar solos deserve special mention. The vocals are good, although I don't think that they always fit into the music, but all-in-all this band is very talented.
"Nineteen Nintie Four" is an awesome opener, a definitive stand out. "Restless Mind" is also a good rock song, although I can't really point to anything in the song that is really amazing, I just find myself humming to it. Maybe it is the chorus, it's a little slower than the rest of the song, but it actually works very well. "Stand Your Ground" is a hard rocker, a really great hard rocker. It has a short guitar solo, but it doesn't really matter as the song rocks all the same. Finally, "We Don't Live Forever" is a cool song reminding me a little of late 80's / early 90's Aerosmith.
Actually all the songs tend to have that Aerosmith feel to them, but you can feel other influences as well, like W.A.S.P. and AC/DC. The Stand Your Ground EP/single can be purchased at the band's website or you can listen to each track at their myspace page. - Sleaze Roxx

Listening to the 4 tracks on “Stand Your Ground” is indeed an energy consuming activity and yet I can’t resist hitting that play button the minute my breathing has returned to normal. Captivating stuff? You bet!
But who are these gentlemen that call themselves Billion Dollar Babies? Well, I don’t think it will come as a big surprise when I say they are based out of the heart of Sweden and that their sound and look incorporate many of the elements that made ’80’s melodic hard rock reach the heights of success it did back in the day. “Stand Your Ground” isn’t their first feat of arms since their humble beginnings in 2005. They’ve released 2 promotional CD’s (“Ladies First” and “Back For More”) and last year they even treated their fans to a genuine live DVD entitled ”Bigger, Louder, Better”.
The musicianship is impeccable, the songs ooze with melody and the amount of hooks would have the captain of the average Japanese whale hunting ship respectfully bow his head.
The EP is kicked into gear with the sound of a starting engine before guitarists Jon Silver and Pat Kramer lay down the disc’s meatiest riff. Sound wise “Nineteen Nintie Four” reminds me of the Bruce Kulick led Union mixed with the criminally overlooked Hair Of The Dog.
“Restless Minds” and the title track are both highly melodic with great backing vocals, catchy choruses and some fine guitar playing. While listening to both cuts I couldn’t get the name of fellow Swedes Crazy Lixx out my mind cause just like the latter, BDB have mastered the art of creating songs with a superb live feeling to perfection.
Finishing off the disc is “We Don’t Live Forever” that invites the listener to get up on his/her feet and seize the day (or strap on that earlier mentioned air guitar).
I guess you’ve gathered by now that I believe BDB to be a band to keep an eye on in 2008. If they manage to release a full length album crammed with superb songs like the ones on “Stand Your Ground” they could well become a major force to be reckoned with. - Rock Report

Dunque, dove eravamo rimasti, a si, avevo avuto il piacere di ascoltare il demo di debutto degli svedesi Billion Dollar Babies “Ladies first� non tanto tempo addietro, e ricordo bene anche l’ottima impressione che il quintetto in questione aveva suscitato in me con quel primo lavoro da studio, un demo che, seppure prodotto in maniera abbastanza artigianale, riusciva già a mettere in evidenza le qualità peculiari della formazione scandinava in questione, che si rendeva artefice di un grintoso hard rock di matrice prettamente street rock di scuola statunitense, lasciando già intravedere delle ottime capacità di song writing, capacità che, naturalmente, in tutto questo tempo, si sono addirittura affinate.
Di tempo ne è passato dunque, e non del tutto invano, almeno per la band che, dopo il battesimo discografico, ha prodotto un nuovo mini cd, che naturalmente non ho ascoltato, ma che, da quello che ho potuto leggere, ha ottenuto degli ottimi riscontri, riuscendo a finanziarsi addirittura la pubblicazione di un primo DVD ufficiale, comunque acquistabile direttamente dal sito ufficiale dei nostri, esperienze dunque molto importanti, che hanno spinto i nostri ad imbarcarsi nuovamente nella pubblicazione di un nuovo supporto fonografico, ancora una volta prodotto in proprio, che da quanto ho potuto appurare con mano, eleva, ed in maniera molto esponenziale, le potenzialità espressive dei cinque scandinavi, portandoli a compiere degli enormi passi in campo compositivo, passi che li conducono pur sempre su territori musicali che hanno comunque quel certo sapore vintage, e che, naturalmente , rimangono fortemente legati a doppia mandata, ad una certa corrente musicale hard rock di fondo, ma non solo.
Già , devo ammettere con tutta onestà che i Billion Dollar Babies, ne hanno compiuto di strada da quel primo vagito musicale di qualche mese addietro, riuscendo addirittura a maturare una buona capacità strumentale nonché una dignitosa componente stilistica, anche abbastanza personale che, oggi più di ieri, li riesce a rendere ben riconoscibili sin dalle prime battute, davvero sbalorditivo l’uso dei cori su alcuni brani, e che, li potrebbe condurre veramente lontano, questo grazie soprattutto ad un’attitudine smaccatamente da rocker consumati che, se unita ad una verve musicale davvero molto apprezzabile come già dicevamo, nonché ad una qualità di scrittura moderatamente di un altro rango, o sulla bocca di tutti nel minor tempo possibile.
Attitudine dicevamo, ma anche una certa maturazione artistica che ha seguito di pari passo un’evoluzione, diciamo anche abbastanza naturale, che ha portato con se dei piccoli, ma pur sempre evidenti, accorgimenti, basti ascoltare la sontuosa “Restless Minds� e le sue armonizzazioni tipicamente gotiche, sullo stile dei vecchi 69 Eyes o degli Him più metallici, per rendersi conto di quanto detto in precedenza, un brano che rischia seriamente di diventare un classico del genere, grazie soprattutto ad ammiccanti inserti melodici e ad intrecci di una certa valenza dark, anche se, è bene ribadirlo ancora una volta, la band non dimentica neanche minimamente la sua natura diciamo stradaiola, e si inerpica in costruzioni sporche e ruvide come nel caso dell’opening track “Nineteen nintie four� con i suoi chitarroni graffianti, ed i suoi chorus dannatamente ammiccanti, o come nel caso della sculettante “We don’t live forever� tipica party song che si pone diciamo a metà strada fra i Bang Tango meno oscuri e gli L.A. Guns più viziosi, o dell’altrettanto valida “Stand your round� che gioca con locuzioni più prettamente class metal ed accenti melodici di una certa valenza radiofonica, per un risultato dal forte retrogusto eighties style.
Dunque un primo passo verso un successo che da più parti è stato più volte pronosticato? Vedremo, anche perché, come al solito, saranno i discografici a dover rendere conto di una band dalle qualità artistiche spiccatamente superiori alla media, sarebbe veramente un crimine pensare il contrario, quindi a noi non ci rimane che aspettare e sperare naturalmente…
In definitiva dei grandi…….

Nämlich an den Grandfather des Schockrocks, ALICE COOPER, und sein gleichnamiges Album bzw. seinen gleichnamigen Hit aus den frühen 70ern. Seit 2005 gibt es nun also aber auch eine Band, die so heißt. Ob sie mit Onkel Alice was gemeinsam haben? Na ja, in gewisser Weise schon, schlägt doch ihr sleaziger Hard Rock in eine ähnliche Kerbe wie Vincent Furniers Überscheiben "Trash" (1988) oder "Hey Stoopid" (1990). Aber auch die ehemaligen Toxic Twins, also Steven Tyler, Joe Perry und Konsorten und die MÖTLEY CRÜE mitsamt Hairspray-Clique winken uns immer mal wieder zu, wenn die BILLION DOLLAR BABIES durch die Gehirnwindungen brettern.
Brettern – das ist auch gleich das richtige Stichwort für den Opener "Nineteen nintie four", denn bei diesem Arschtreter möchte man am liebsten gleich auf seine (nur im Geiste vorhandene) Harley steigen und eine kleine Runde drehen. Der Ohrwurmrefrain tut sein Übriges dazu, dass dieser Song danach schreit, die Repeat-Taste zu drücken. Nein, wir widerstehen aber und hören uns zunächst mal das ganze Material der Schweden an, das im Übrigen auf 4 Songs begrenzt ist. Laut Homepage soll aber schon im nächsten Jahr, ähhmmm, nein heuer schon ein erstes Full-Length-Werk folgen. Ob darauf "Restless minds" zu hören sein wird, wird sich zeigen. Dieser Song kommt wesentlich gediegener daher als der Opener, um nicht zu sagen radiotauglicher. Damit büßt er aber leider auch etwas an demjenigen Drive ein, den der Opener versprüht. Der Titeltrack kommt da schon wieder näher heran und verleitet schnell zum Mitwippen. Danach wird die Messlatte aber nochmal auf das Einstiegsniveau gelegt. "We don`t live forever" strotzt nur so vor Energie und lässt uns wehmütig zurückdenken an die Zeit unmittelbar bevor die Grunge(jahrhundert)welle zahlreiche, talentierte Bands des Hairspray-Sektors (CINDERELLA, BRITNY FOX, RATT, BULLETBOYS, TYKETTO, SHOTGUN MESSIAH, BABYLON A.D., uvm.) in die Tiefen der Unbedeutsamkeit mitriss.
Anno 2009 sieht das aber alles schon wieder viel freundlicher aus. Der Grunge stieg und fiel im Wesentlichen mit dem Namen NIRVANA und so krochen auch die Hairspray-Rocker (neben den vielen anderen Betroffenen) nach und nach wieder aus ihren Löchern hervor. Ja, und mit dieser kleinen Renaissance schlüpft auch wieder Nachwuchs aus den eigenen Reihen ans Tageslicht, wohlwissend, dass mit dieser Stilrichtung nicht mehr die allergrößten Brötchen verdient werden können. Zu diesen Sprösslingen gehören auch die BILLION DOLLAR BABIES und mir ihrem unbedarften, "rotzlöffeligen" Auftreten können die Schweden wirklich punkten. Eine fette, klare Produktion macht diese in Eigenproduktion enstandene EP zu einer äußerst schmackhaften Kostprobe für das, was in diesem Jahr noch folgen soll... Bei einem Namen, der wohl einem ALICE COOPER Album entlehnt ist, und der dicken Schminkschicht, die diese fünf Schweden auf dem Backfoto präsentieren, ist schon vor dem ersten Riff klar, wohin der Weg führt: Hier wird gerockt.

Die BILLION DOLLAR BABIES spielen klassischen Hard Rock, der ein wenig nach Haarspray und Glitter riecht oder BON JOVI als sie noch Eier hatten (ja, die hatten sie mal. Nein, gerochen hab ich nie dran…), mit prägnanten, raumfüllenden Riffs, eingängigem Mittwipp-Groove und einer angenehmen Stimme, die in den riskanten Passagen gerade noch die Kurve vor der zu hohen Höhe erwischt, und dazu massig "Ohohoh" Mitgesinge der Instrumentalisten. Das Ganze ist so auf Radiotauglichkeit gebügelt, dass die überschwänglichen Pressestimmen auf dem Promozettel, die bereits das erste Album bei einem Major Label prognostizieren, zumindest vor einigen Jahren mittlerweile sicher schon erhört worden wären. Aber jetzt ist „Stand Your Ground“ bereits der zweite labellose Release und vielleicht hat die Band einfach den Zug zeitlich um ein paar Jahre verpasst.

Ich wäre einer der letzten, der sich beschwert, wenn im Radio endlich nochmal vernünftige Rockmusik zu hören wäre und die BILLION DOLLAR BABIES hätten vermutlich gute Chancen auf ausreichend Airtime, aber dafür müsste die Sendepolitik der Radiosender sich gehörig ändern oder ein Major Label daherkommen und die Band mit ordentlichem monetären Einsatz ins Radio pushen.
So gibt es eine nicht untalentierte Band mehr auf diesem Planeten, die gepflegt rocken kann ohne wehzutun. Ob das allein reicht steht in den Sternen, zumal die Herkunft aus Schweden seit EUROPE auch nicht mehr so viele bekannte Hard Rock Gruppen hervorgebracht hat.
Der letzte musikalische Stern, der zumindest teilweise vergleichbar ist, ist leider auch viel zu schnell verglüht, und dabei waren THE DARKNESS noch eine ganze Spur dreckiger und durchgeknallter…. - Bloodchamber

Sie würden allerdings perfekt in die Zeit des Glam-Heavy-Hair-oderwiemanesnennenmag-Metal passen - auch optisch, präsenieren sie sich doch am Cover mit Dauerwelle und (dezenter) Schminke.

Musikalisch drängt sich beim Hören der Debüt-EP irgendwie der Vergleich mit der ersten SKID ROW-Veröffentlichung auf, jedoch werden auch Zutaten anderer oben genannter Bands beigemengt. Bei den vier Nummern der EP handelt es sich um flotte, rotzige, straighte Heavy-Rock-Nummern mit klassischen oh-oh-Chören, gewürzt mit stimmigen Gitarren-Soli. Party Mucke, tadellos produziert, die sicherlich auch live für gute Stimmung sorgen kann. Keine Ausfälle, besonders 'Restless Minds' sei hier als herzerweichende Nummer hervorgehoben.

Macht Spaß und durchaus Lust auf mehr. Allerdings sollten dann beim ersten Longplayer die woh-oh's vielleicht etwas zurückgeschraubt werden.
