Big Tobacco & The Pickers (Mitzi’s Sister, Sat. June 18 @ 10 p.m.)
Ornery good ole country music about drinkin’ and screwin’ around and havin’ a good time. They even have a song about how they sound better if you’re drunk. If I say this is a perfect band to play The Dakota at 2 in the morning, Toronto folk will know what to expect.

“Big Tobacco and the Pickers create a sound that pays tribute to the country music of the past. This is no pop country… They manage to capture and recreate the magic of traditional country music with a style and authenticity that’s hard to believe. This is a strong debut release from an intriguing group… They’ve produced a CD that shows off a talented group of musicians creating a type of country music that’s rarely heard these days.”

“Big Tobacco & The Pickers, the band's self-titled debut, delivers on the promise of the band's live shows, and announces them as one of the bright new stars on the alt-country horizon... Vocalist Jamie Oliver shows tremendous charisma and showmanship, and the band matches him step for step… Big Tobacco & The Pickers are the real deal... Vocalist Jamie Oliver is personality plus, selling every song as if his life depends on it, and the band is as tight and interconnected as you could hope for… a great reminder of what country music was meant to be.”

For those with a penchant for hurtin’ outlaw ballads and hard drinkin’classics, I highly recommend Big Tobacco & The Pickers; both the compact disc, and live....... Long live country music!

Bio
Big Tobacco & the Pickers are a six piece country outfit based out of Southern Ontario that formed in early 2008. They have a wide variety of influences ranging from Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Johnny Cash, to The Band, Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills etc. They are a big part of Toronto's thriving country music scene and are regulars at Toronto area institutions like The Dakota Tavern, Cadillac Lounge, and The Cameron House. They also perform throughout Ontario and Quebec and in 2014 are planning a Canadian Tour. Along the way theyve had the opportunity to play with country music greats like Al Brisco and Burke Carroll (pedal steel), Steve Piticco and Marc Roy (guitar), Bazil Donovan ( Blue Rodeo )and have opened for international touring acts like Eddie Spaghetti of " The Supersuckers ".
The 2010 self titled album helped define them as a band and proved that they are not slaves to a genre. They assembled a collection of diverse music, rich with overtones of traditional, honky-tonk, and outlaw country flavors. The songs painted pictures of travels, heartache, outlaw stand offs and their experiences growing up in Canada.
In early 2014 the band will release their follow up album produced by Moe Berg of 'The Pursuit of Happiness'. The new collection of songs tell both imagined and historical stories that while serious are still about keeping the dance floor busy. Many of the songs are in their current set lists so come out to a live show and see where Big Tobacco & The Pickers are headed.
From the rich tones of a pedal steel to the ripping licks of a Fender Telecaster, Big Tobacco & the Pickers deliver a new brand of country music, true to old school tradition.
