Haifa, Israeli-based alt rock band Bigblindspecial, which has been cooking up guitar-soaked rhythms since the middle of the decade, issued debut EP “Save Our Song” in 2009, and this year, follows with full-length “Being Supreme.” Opening tracks “Gun” and “Simple Life” offer representative hitworthy fare, with fervent tempo, a constant splatter of in-your-face organic instrumentation and the bulls-eye vocals of songwriter and lead guitarist Leon Yanovski—who at times conjures the cat-calling passion of Jim Morrison. “Safest Bet” tames the tempo, oozing a sensual palette of electric guitars and a confessional lyric that tests relationship waters: “How do I know when it’s time to stay, when I can spoil it, with every word I say?”; while the album’s midtempo title track infuses elements of jazz with a ‘70’s-evoking groove. The quartet is wise to reissue EP title track “Save Our Song,” perhaps Bigblindspecial’s trump card, with its mystical arrangement and some nice vocal layering, alongside competent side work from bandmates Viktor Halperin on guitars, bass guitarist Boris Stessin and Alex Rozenberg manning percussion. In all, Bigblindspecial delivers a distinct, melodic set here, if bordering at times on lo-fi, for better or worse. Given Haifa’s increasing reputation as the cultural center of northern Israel, these boys could soon be the pride of the precinct. - Billboard Discoveries
