Bio
“As if this is the new big band, loved by the BBC and all music magazines!“ - Stephan Michme (Radio MDR, Radio rbb)
Berlin, July, 34° C in the shade. The music that pours out of the speakers doesn’t really fit to the weather. The
thoughts are with the Badeschiff, cocktails with an umbrella and sunset by the river. But in my ears: gloom,
melancholy, wistfulness. Similarly sombre, five gentlemen look at me from their Facebook page. 909 people
like this so far. Posted 9th July 2014: “So the work begins...we are starting to make the first steps in preparation
for our EP release, watch this space“. Posted 11th May 2014: “So now we’ve all recovered we’d like to thank
you all for an awesome night!“ Joined Facebook 12th March 2014. From their foundation, via a newcomer
contest triumph, to an EP Release in less than half a year? I put the cocktail aside.
A look at the references shows The XX, Foals, a pinch of Editors and a little bit of Joy Division. Though an
individual sound “of dark, discreet elegance with subtle tickling melodies and the makings of oppressive
beauty. Drawn in black and grey, with a touch of white as a contrast.“, says the press, in person Henning Lühr
(DATEs). You hear that there is an Englishman involved and you also hear that the band discovers itself. But as
usual, what happens on the way is more exciting than the actual arrival at the destination.
And what is it with the band name? What is this Berlin Syndrome? At first thought, many possible answers
come into my mind. But the band itself delivers the most plausible one. The London of Great Britain, the New
York of America, the Barcelona of Spain and the Berlin of Germany. Paradise and hell in the same place. A place
full of secrets and attractions that are a grudge and a blessing at the same time. An uncertain feeling, a
constant struggle. And then I realise that there wouldn’t have been a better name for this band. The duel with
the hypocritical fake charm and at times a flickering of hope. I listen...excited of who will be the winner.
