"Lighthearted, good-humored acoustic rock is a surprisingly dangerous genre to mess with: It's all too easy to sail off the edge into shtick. Thankfully, despite the silly name, there's more Violent Femmes in the form of undeniably strong pop songwriting and genuinely witty lyrics with Band Called Catch than there is shameless shucking and jiving a la, say, the Barenaked Ladies. Witness "Girl Gone Wild," the first track on the band's Web site, www.myspace.com/bandcalledcatch.
"She said you should do anything to be a rock star/Because I'd do anything to be a porno star," guitarist, vocalist and bandleader Tim Frank sings. "She took all of her clothes off for one of them free T-shirts/And look at her now, look at her now, look at her now/Her father must be proud."
Formed by Frank in early 2008 and completed by bassist Blake Wells, lead guitarist Doug Waxman, drummer Eli P and the honey-voiced backing vocalist Jessica Lyons, Band Called Catch can't be faulted for a lack of productivity: In its short time together, it's written a handful of songs as memorable as "Girl Gone Wild" (including "Far Away Girl" and "Riccis Girl") and filmed an impressively edited and very Chicago-centric video for "Green Light."
The group will be marking its one-year anniversary on Friday, Jan. 30, with a show at the Elbo Room, 2871 N. Lincoln. (The cover is $9.) Help these funny folkies celebrate, and cheer 'em on to another 365 days as tuneful as the ones just passed."

There’s something endearing about a band sincerely having fun playing a show. On Friday night at the cozy Webster Hall Studio, Chicago-based outfit BandCalledCatch played a set that was memorable both for the quality of its folk-acoustic rock and for its unique stage presence. How unique? Well, it involved a frisbee toss (in which the band threw out frisbees with download codes attached, which is one of the more fun ways to get people to listen to your songs), a former member of the band jumping on stage for a freestyle rap, and lots of dancing and foot stomping.
The music felt as if Dispatch had grown into a full outfit, with plenty of harmonicas and groovy bass lines. The highlight at first listen was the infectiously catchy “Girl Gone Wild,” which contained a chorus about being a porn star and a girl who “took off her clothes for one of them free t-shirts.” The band also caught (no pun intended) the audience’s attention with its banter, especially during the band introductions, which included an offer for body shots at the bar. After the set, the band mingled with the audience, reinforcing the communal aspect of the night; more than anything, BandCalledCatch’s set felt like a gathering of friends who just happened to bring along instruments - CMJ

"Band Called Catch isn’t a studio band. They don’t deserve to be surrounded by 4 walls with a bunch of microphones in between them. These guys (and a hot gal – seriously – check out their myspace) belong on a stage – in a hot room, not dark though – Band is much too peppy – light is needed. They aren’t sad, super serious songwriters who wonder why they were born. Here’s what they are: a witty, upbeat band with a strong appeal to those of you who enjoy music from Sublime (without the drug references), Dave Matthews Band (without the annoying fans), Collective Soul (without the band), and Barenaked Ladies (without the lameness? Is that a word?) .
Their songs are fun to listen to because they sound fun to play. They give us the authority to wonder out loud whether her father ever ended up seeing that tape/dvd (Girl Gone Wild) – without feeling bad about it. After all, everyone wants to be a porn star right? It allows us to revel in the fact that yes, we’ve Done It Again over and over and over – and gives it to us in a half rap, half singing voice reminiscent of Brad Nowell’s ode to the rufie, Date Rape – but doesn’t offend us nearly as much. The acoustic diddling runs from Gypsy Kingish to straight up and down strums, leaving us wanting an electric rhythm guitar, but by the time we think of that, a lead has been sprinkled into our left ear drum from a short clean, telecaster sound. Their breakdowns are cool, especially in the fast paced Green Light – where they also perfect the DMB style of having all the instruments come in at the exact same time - offering a thunderous jam band spectacle observed and enjoyed by all who wear shirts with letters on their chest and girls who’s hair is naturally brown but now radiates the glow of California beaches.
See them live, or, ahem, excuse me, Catch them live at the Tonic Room February 18th."

I had planned on leaving soon after Jame's performance but was distracted by the next band to get up on stage. With catchy music and fun lyrics (my favorite is Girl Gone Wild), their songs kept me from leaving. They've also got a pair of fans that caught my eye, an elder couple with a camera and "proud parents" written all over their faces. Cute.
I was curious to learn the name of this band so I leaned over and asked the older gentleman.
"A band called Catch," he answered.
"Catch?" My immediate reaction: disappointment. What a boring name for such an entertaining group. I mean they had free-styling and spoken word! Catch? Yawn.
"No, they're called Band Called Catch," the man corrected. How three little words can make a difference to me, I don't know, but I like it much better. It reminds me of a band I listened to in high school, Keep Away From Julie. Poor Julie was the girl they hated as little kids. I wonder how this band came up with Band Called Catch.
With a name like that and the music they played, May and I decided to stay for the rest of the show. We were so groupy, we even bought their CD and May developed a crush on all the guys in the band. I only had eyes for the drummer. He looked really familiar. Not the familiar, in the creepy pick-up line sort of way but the familiar where it will bother you until you figure it out kind of way.
I vaguely remember him being my waiter once - some blurry image in the back of my mind where I was annoyed and hungry and he was giving me food. My suspicions were confirmed later when I asked him after their show. It was a relief to figure out where I've seen him before. It seems that when I'm not hungry, Dustin the drummer is very nice and gracious. Did I mention that he performed really well? I should know, I'm on level medium-hard on Rock Band drums.
Note: I'm not just saying this to alleviate my guilt for being a grouchy eater. Check them out yourself! - Erica YEE

Band Called Catch is an alt rock band from Chicago, IL. The dynamic sound you’ll hear when listening to a BCC record is the direct result of a ragtag team of 7 different people from 7 different worlds. In February 2008, amid the sub-zero temperatures of a Chicago winter, BCC was born. Starting as a fun band that played catchy, folk influenced music for nothing more than good times and free beer, their first show was at Bills Blues in Evanston, IL. The show went well and so, the rest is history. Jumps, falls, and a few line-up changes later, and Band Called Catch has transformed into a 7-piece-party-band with a distinct dynamic sound that has gained national notice and acclaim.
The best way to experience BCC is live. Dust off your dancing shoes and come say hello.
