HE BODOG BATTLE OF THE BANDS HAS RAGED ON SINCE MID-SUMMER OF '06, WITH THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF BANDS NATIONWIDE COMPETING IN SEVERAL MAJOR U.S CITIES FOR A SHOT AT A ONE MILLION DOLLAR RECORDING CONTRACT WITH BODOG MUSIC. THE MOST RECENT CALIFORNIA BASED BATTLE TOOK PLACE AT THE AVALON IN LOS ANGELES. IN MY HUMBLEST OF OPINIONS, STAND OUT PERFORMANCES INCLUDED THE RAP/ROCK/PUNK FUSION OF THE BACKYARD PIMPS, THE STRANGE AND UNCLASSIFIABLE CASTRO, THE HEAVY METAL CHURNING OF DECOY AND THE REGGAE/ROCK/HIPHOP COMBINATION OF THE BREDRIN DADDYS. NOT SURE WHAT A BREDRIN IS. THE REST OF THE BANDS HAD THEIR STRONG POINTS BUT DID NOT PARTICULARLY STAND OUT. ACTUALLY, CONJOB MIGHT HAVE BEEN ENTERTAINING IF THEY HAD ONLY HAD A SLIGHTLY STRONGER STAGE PRESENCE. THEY HAD A GOOD CONCEPT BUT THAT NIGHT WASN'T THEIR NIGHT. TO MY DISMAY, THE OVERALL WINNER OF THAT FATEFUL NIGHT WAS BLAXMYTH. ADMITTEDLY, THEIR SHOW IS VERY HIGH ENERGY, BUT ASIDE FROM THAT THE CONCEPT AT FIRST SEEMED TO BE A DIRECT RIP-OFF OF BODY COUNT, BUT I LATER LEARNED THE BAND WAS ACTUALLY FORMED BY THE LATE D-ROC, THE ORIGINAL GUITARIST OF BODY COUNT. GO FIGURE. OVER ALL, THE SHOW FEATURED ALOT OF GOOD BANDS FOR THE BUCK AND THOUGH THE BATTLE MAY BE WON, THE WAR IS FAR FROM OVER. WHO WILL HAVE THAT MILLION DOLLAR RECORDING CONTRACT? Rock- Rap-Funk-life-change is the philosophy behind the powerhouse that is Back Yard Pimps. With origins that trace back a decade; the group was formed by brothers Hondo (Vocal/Guitars) and Al Key (Vocals/Keys), in their pursuit to put a soundtrack to their experiences growing up. After a couple different incarnations of the band, BYP finally put together the perfect lineup, including not only Hondo and Al Keyz, but also Nameo (Vocals), ICBM (Drums), Somer Rocks (Guitars) and Andrew Santos (Bass). Now in it's current state, these "brothers in arms" have been literally blazing a path across not only Southern California, but the entire Southwest. Armed with a blazing live show and with the release of their first full length CD entitled Pieces BYP looks to take there brand of Rock, Rap, Funk, life and change to the masses. Back Yard Pimps Won Best Alternative Band and Song of the year for 1980s at the 2010 Inland Empire Music Awards!
