Joelle Britt and Bradley Rouen recently released their debut full length, Through All Our Fears. Aptly titled, the album confronts the subject of love head on, channeling the songwriters’ own relationship as their source of inspiration. Such conversations are normally taboo for couples, dissolving into gossip between friends, the bucket of doubt and regret finally spilling over into a rage of emotional turmoil. Which definitely comes up on this album. For all of the gorgeous sonnets on here, there’s equal amounts of working it out, growing with that guess work.
The overall composition of these songs make falling in love with this album really easy. Strings assemble most of the instrumentation, with light percussion and vocal melodies and harmonies that vibrate and resonate like flutes. The arrangements set the mood, while the lyrics flesh out the details, giving context to the many underlying feels throughout the album. With a softened Dirty Projectors bounce, Aziza & the Cure always come back to a common ground of mutual understanding. The real joy behind this record is how the two parties show their differing thought processes. All too often people find themselves in arguments, only to figure out later they shared the same perspective. As in math and science, multiple paths often arrive to the same conclusion. Aziza & the Cure proudly show each other and us their hearts and hurts. Hopefully this inspires other couples to work it out if they want to be together. Through All Our Fears is truly a sweet and heartwarming account of explainable events. Bio
With aspects of indie, folk, brazilian, and classical music, New York City duo (and real life couple) Aziza & The Cure have a truly captivating sound with an eclectic mix of influences from The Dirty Projectors to brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso. The band recently unveiled their debut album Through All Our Fears early this year after successfully raising over $5,000 via Kickstarter. Through All Our Fears depicts violinist Joelle Britt and guitarist Bradley Rouen's relationship.
Throughout the album, we watch the couple go through infatuation, betrayal, self-examination, and finally reconciliation. Through All Our Fears has been called "Symphonic magic," "Easy to fall in love with," and is said to have "Unforgettable melodies." It was well received on college and non-commercial stations peaking at #21 on Radio CUH, #2 on WSCA, and #1 on Cougar Radio in Dallas.
The duo described the content of their album in an interview with Buzz & Howl: "The album shows us working through our issues as a couple and ends with reconciliation and the declaration: Lets continue to grow."
On their website they describe the meaning of the name Aziza & the Cure as follows, "Aziza is a metaphor for the way the two of us connect and create together. The Cure is a challenge for each of us to address and overcome the issues in our own lives."
But they told a more personal side of the story in an interview on 91.5 WNYE: "Aziza is the name we've picked out for a daughter, and we believe the next generation can be 'the Cure' for all of society's afflictions if we all help pave the way for them."
Fitting into that thread, other notable members of the group include Joelle's siblings, the two young prodigies, 16 year old violinist Sunnaj Britt and 12 year old cellist Sujari Britt.
Aziza & the Cure has recently begun a cover series on their Youtube channel, releasing a new cover song every Tuesday night at 7pm EST.
