Asya's Biography

"Wow! A sensational, charming and exceptionally talented performer' Zeinab Badawi, BBC World
Asya is a singer- songwriter from North London. Of Sudanese origin her early years were spent living in Sweden, Egypt and London. She inherited her talent for singing from her father Satti who was a firm fixture on the Sudanese music scene. Her love for singing and performance prompted her to write her own songs from the age of 17. Asya was vocally trained in the legendary technique of Speech Level Singing. A technique with an alumni that includes Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Barbara Streisand. Her natural gift for singing led to a young talent bursary. Asya counts Kate Bush, Aretha Franklin, RadioHead and Britney Spears among her main influences. It is this appreciation of music across all genres that has given Asya a style described by some as "fun and fresh".
Asya launches her debut EP of fresh, soulful dance tracks. The EP is FREE to download until March 2011 from her website www.asyamusic.co.uk
Her sound is an eclectic mix of uptempo pop songs, with direct lyrics. Currently performing live throughout London venues, gig dates can be found on www.asyamusic.co.uk
Asya also studied at Queen Mary University earning her a degree in Biology. Forever active in music, Asya used her university years to create sell out events at Cargo and The Jazz Cafe. It was through these events that she had the opportunity to perform to a large audience.
After graduating, Asya put together a 6-piece band complete with percussion. Her popularity as a songwriter and performer earned her repeat performances at Ronnie Scotts, The Bedford, Cafe de Paris, The Jazz Cafe and The Pigalle Club.
"Great lyrics, great delivery, great presence...I'm looking forward to having you back at The Bedford and Regal Rooms" Lexi Rose, The Bedford
Asya collaborated with producer and school friend Alex Anotonio in May 2010 ("a cheeky, fresh and energetic sound" Gabriella, Gayme Girls). Inspired by the everyday conflicts in life and love, Asya sought to write lyrics people could relate to. Her first single 'Bitch in the Bedroom' showcases her punchy style of writing:
"Punchy, independent lyrics that let everyone know that she won't be controlled...outside the bedroom that is" Slice the Pie
Asya honed her performance style at Cabaret and Gay Club events in late 2010. Creating many of her own costumes from scratch, Asya's daring style combined with her sultry performance meant she quickly become a firm favourite amongst promoters and audiences alike.
"Not many women can get away with wearing a purple fishnet bodystocking and making it look both elegant and chic." Tricity Vogue, Bethnal Green Working Mens Club
Asya's debut EP is now available FREE until March 2011. The EP and future gigs are all available from her website www.asyamusic.co.uk.
