"Pirate Pirate Motorhome, Phreddy and the Nightmares, Cathoholix
Oct. 29 - Cabin Tavern
Over the Halloween weekend, there was no better place to see live music than the Cabin Tavern.....
Pirate Pirate Motorhome started the evening. Although they've been around for a while, they've been laying low as of late. A four-piece which features Barrett on vocals, Vegas on guitar, Preston on bass and Drew on drums. Pirate Pirate Motorhome's songs consist of complex layers of guitar riffs and bass lines. Throughout a song, they build and build on the riffs that they play into a crescendo and it breaks down into a fun single new guitar riff; or in the song "Shenanigans (incorrectly labeled '16 is Such a Hard Age')," the song breaks down into a fun saxophone melody. The band understands perfectly how to combine all these elements with Drew's powerhouse, loud, concise drumming into great and fun songs. While performing the guys in Pirate Pirate Motorhome were all over the place jumping around and rocking, which created a light hearted, energetic and eccentric atmosphere that made a person just have to dance.
Second to play was punk band Phreddy and the Nightmares......................
....All told though, it was a great night of music and I found a new favorite Bellingham band, Pirate Pirate Motorhome

WHATS UP SHOW REVIEW
Pirate Pirate Motor Home is fronted by Barrett Lizza (vocal/guitar)
who is a quirky, entertaining front man. Between songs the band had
either an electronic drum beat or some anecdote offered up by Barrett.
This was a very clever way of retaining energy between songs. Bassist
Preston Whitman slapped and worked his bass adding melodic depth to the
music. His Beer Pump Hat was a nice touch.
The early 80's jogging outfit wore by the drummer was on
par with the fun youthful image of the band. Lead guitarist Vegas has
chops and style. This guy rips the guitar and has a very bright future
ahead of him. The band was very comfortable on stage and did a great
job of keeping the set fresh and entertaining. My favorite part of the
night was when Barrett asked the crowd to contribute lyrics to a jam
song.Barrett then sang of Mad Cows and Hard Poo. It was hilarious and
very well done.

If you blink, you'll miss The Ruby Room, a downtown rock bar nestled in an almost 'secret' spot on Central Avenue in Phoenix.
But since opening in May 2007, it's developed a reputation as a venue of choice for local and touring bands who want to rock out.
Deep red walls, dim lighting and vintage velvet paintings give the space the a faux-swank feeling something like a bowling alley lounge from the '60s or '70s, and it's just what owner Greg Riggins was looking for.
"I literally grew up in these types of places," he said.
Riggins says he has a doctorate in hanging out in bars, having previously run the hipster music dive bar the Emerald Lounge, which his mother had owned for 20 years before he took over.
A huge supporter of Valley music, Riggins wanted to continue that space's legacy (now a Pei Wei and a Starbucks) and create a cool venue where enthusiasts could come for an eclectic range of bands.
At the Ruby Room, bands play deafening gigs four nights a week and Riggins welcomes all kinds.
"The genres are all over the place: rock, indie, Americana, rockabilly, Latin and metal," he said. And on off nights, local DJs spin a diverse mix of sets.
The Phoenix New Times named this pint-sized venue "Best Emerging Indie Music Club of 2007." It has since drawn a music obsessed crowd of local musicians checking out peers or supporting pals, neighborhood wanderers or Phoenicians looking for a good neighborhood bar.
Good venue space, sound and stage set-up makes the Ruby Room an ideal location to play said Vegas Miller lead guitarist of Pirate Pirate Motorhome, a retro rock group based out of Seattle that recently played at the Ruby Room.
"It's a rad place with a mature atmosphere," said Miller.
But like any up-and-coming bar, The Ruby Room still has a few kinks to work out, as Miller said the venue didn't provide any local bands to help support the touring groups, which would've helped boost bar sales that night.
Regardless, Miller said the venue has great potential.
And owner Riggins agrees, as he works to get his hidden gem of a bar more recognition in the downtown scene.
"I am going to continue to work towards getting more recognition for the SoDo district (south of Downtown, between Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street). This area will shortly be the new boho destination," said Riggins.

Bio
Astronauts in Air Balloons is an up and coming alternative / experimental rock band that has had a lot of success in the the Northwest. In addition to a rabid following in their home town and surrounding regions, the band has already embarked on multiple tours without the backing of a label. They have a confident and seamless stage presence that sets them apart from their peers in the independent music scene. Their live shows are a frenzied, energetic and comedic eccentricity. They have delivered face-rocking performances at venues all over the United States. Fresh off the return of their second tour (SXSW) and the release of their first official studio album, the band is eagerly awaiting what lies ahead.....
Astronauts and Air Balloons consists of four very talented members-
Barrett Lizza: Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Hand Percussion
Barrett’s vocal range is extremely versatile. He sings mainly alternative, but confidently sings other styles, such as grunge, folk, and metal. His vocal range travels everywhere from low to high, and he creates a calculatedly chaotic style to best suit the music.
Preston Whitman: Bass, Sax, Whistler, Didgeridoo
Preston’s main influence is Les Claypool, and it is easy to hear why. His playing is quite similar, but with a Preston twist to it. He is as good as they come, super talented, and makes others who "slapa-da-bass" cry.
