Ash Devine was recently the Crowd Popular Vote winner at the Root Bar Song Writers competition in Asheville, NC. - Root Bar News
The following was published in The Floyd Press on April 1, 2010.
“You need only three things for humanitarian clowning,” Ash Devine told a group of Young Actors Co-op (YAC) students, “a twinkle in your eye, a smile on your face, and a willingness to greet.”
Devine, a musician from Asheville, North Carolina, who grew up in the Blacksburg countryside was recently in town to teach a workshop on clowning, which she learned from Patch Adams, the medical doctor, social activist, and clown who was played by Robin Williams in the 1998 movie “Patch Adams.”
The 24 year-old Devine, who graduated from UNC Asheville with a degree in drama and community arts, first became familiar with Floyd when she was in high school and developed a following as a regular performer when the Pine Tavern hosted a weekly open mic. - Loose Leaf Notes, Floyd Co. Press
While she's probably not running away to join the circus, Devine combines singing and heartfelt clowning into an act that can be called unique. Most recently, she entered the Great Blue Ridge Talent Search at White Horse Black Mountain, where she was passed through to the competition's second round, still under way.
- Asheville Citizen Times
"Ash Devine's music is pensive and beautiful, justifiably angry given
certain subjects, socially conscious but not preachy, and steeped in
originality. Her playing draws you in, and her lyrics take you on a ride
beside her while she thinks out loud. Before it's over, you're asking the
same questions, making the same observations, and floating on the mood her
music creates." - Dave Turner

Bio
With a growing reputation for original sound and a growing repertoire of songs, Ash Devine is Asheville NC's favorite songwriter. Ash Devine is the freshest sound in the Indie-folk music scene.
Originally from Southern Appalachia, Ash Devine began writing songs and performing live over twelve years ago at the age of thirteen. At the age of eighteen, she moved to Asheville, North Carolina, to pursue her musical career and study theater in the artist’s Mecca of the southeast.
Ash Devine is now a prolific performer with a B.A. in Theater Arts, as well as years of street-performing experience and Humanitarian Clowning with The Gesundheit! Institute and its founder, the famous doctor Patch Adams. This experience in performance arts has made Ash into a well-rounded, multi-talented performer, whose visionary message is playfully serious.
Her stage presence as a lead vocalist and guitarist is comedic and serious at the same time, always promising a captivating performance. The Ash Devine Band’s performances have been described as a "variety show that calls for action".
Ash Devine will often double as her own opening act, using her talents in theater and clowning to create a unique Ukulele-playing, joke-filled character who charms audiences by mimicking the traditional role of the “fool”, integrating comedy and sometimes audience participation into her musical performance. On request, Ash Devine offers workshops to audience members in improvisation, clowning and conflict resolution theater forms (based on the work of Augusto Boal).
Ash's songs are often compared to folk heroes such as John Prine, Joni Mitchell, Neil Yong and Bob Dylan. Her finger picking guitar style echoes the sounds of Django Reinhardt, Ani Difranco, and Doc Watson.
Ash Devine just released her second CD, "Bird Must Fly", featuring recordings with the world-renowned Bass player and music expert Patrick Turner. They are back in the studio once again, creating another full length CD with the band.
The Ash Devine Band was originally formed in Asheville, NC. After numerous performances together and years of studio experience, the band is truly dynamic. Ash Devine sings lead vocals and plays acoustic guitar and ukulele. Ash Devine's voice is stunning with a breathy yet powerfully driving sound quality.
The folk-fusion style combines sounds of Appalachian traditional, blues, jazz and world music infused with original style. Asheville star Dave Turner says, “The music is steeped in originality.” The song lyrics are undeniably heartfelt and grounded in social change, and the style-integrated music tells a captivating story of it's own.
Ash Devine’s intentions for music are to create social change, to enhance education and to orchestrate grassroots networking through artistic collaboration and performance projects. The band plans to integrate live dance and art performances into their show, including comedy skits, clown numbers and audience participation. Ash believes that this multi-media collaborative performance is a “model for community building”.
