"Disturb the Universe"

Various* – The Archaics – Jungle Hijinks – River City Wreckage: An Edmonton Compilation ( Self Released )
- CJSW

"Fresh Fruit Volume Three"

Oak Apple Records is a Canadian record label out of Edmonton. This release is volume three of their Fresh Fruit series designed to showcase the up and coming artists that Oak Apple puts out. Volume Three will be the final volume in the Fresh Fruit series that debuted in December of 2010.

I have to say, it’s nice getting to review a compilation, especially one full of different styles like Fresh Fruit Volume Three. Often times label comps are full of whatever genre that label sticks to, but with Oak Apple you get rock, pop, hip hop, punk, and more. This way if you don’t like something, you aren’t stuck with a dozen other songs that are somewhat similar. On Fresh Fruit you can skip something you don’t like and find something you do. There really is something for everybody on here.

Fresh Fruit has a dozen tracks from a dozen different artists. I didn’t listen to every track in its entirety as I wasn’t really feeling some of them, but, as I said, this is part of the beauty of this release. While I found it to be fairly hit and miss, there is definitely some promising stuff on here. The song by Cygnets seemed pretty now in that Diamond Rings, 80s throwback way. The Archaics song is reminiscent of the Strokes and early Kings of Leon. I’d also be interested in hearing more from Polly-ester Suicide, The Mighty Alliance, and Thoroughbred Racing Pigeon (who definitely win for most fun name on the album). The final track on the album, “Fly Into the Sun” by Books… really grew on me too. I didn’t love the way it started but it just keeps building in this awesome way to the point that it may be my favorite song on the release.

Oak Apple has likely achieved their goal with Fresh Fruit Volume 3. I highly doubt they expect everyone to love every song they put out, but they want you to see what they have to offer. And from what we hear on this album, they offer a nice variety of musicians that cross multiple genres on their label So do check out Fresh Fruit Volume Three, you’re bound to find something you enjoy.

"The Archaics by Void Magazine"

"The Archaics are what happens when you take four young chaps, raise them up on a diet of unrefined rock & roll, shove musical instruments into their hands and tell them to go make some noise. What you end up with is a finger-trap tight sound steeped in the past and trigged to destroy the modern times of electric-crazed disco dance music. The Archaics are sure to drive the coolest music yuppie to at least a firm head bob if not an all out dance epidemic. Although the band has yet to reach legal voting age they seem to have it all together. The Archaics are a band worth checking out. Keep an eye on them as i can only see them continuing to improve with age."

"Ride the Tempo - Boy & His Blue"

"Yeah, you know what day it is. OK, let’s kick off Weird Tuesday with a little blues garage number by Edmonton’s The Archaics." Mark Anthony Brennan - Ride The Tempo

"Not for Nothing Review"

"An early listen of an Archaics/Pachyderm split cassette. “Not for Nothing” by Edmonton’s Archaics has Lee Hazlewood-style pop teaming up with ’60s garage psych. Dig it, brothers and sisters." - Mark Anthony Brennan - Ride the Tempo

"Soft Focus Review"

"Pairing the earthy scent with their evolving style of mod, Doors-inspired, B-sides is something they’ll do for the time being." - Beatroute

"Soft Focus Review"

“Archaics as a whole come off as a scruffier, clangier, and more mystical - not tomention more tangential! - than their ‘60s predecessors. On Soft Focus, produced by the do-no-wrong Renny Wilson, the Edmonton rockers wrap listeners in a sweet cocoon of drug-trip-in-the-
desert melodies, surfy riffs, jazzy horns and percussion, unpredictable tempo changes, humming keyboards, and Snell’s lounge-lizard mumble-barks.” Sandra Sperounes - Edmonton Journal 2016 - Edmonton Journal

"Soft Focus Review"

"Growing disillusioned with what they saw as an increasing staleness and safety of the garage-psych genre, they took deliberate steps to shake things up a bit." - Vue Weekly

"Black Mirror Blues Review"

"RTT favourites The Archaics up their game big time on their new album ‘Soft Focus’. On “Black Mirror Blues”, for example, they blend southern boogie and prog jazz elements into their psych garage rock and come up with a manic, swampy brew, reminiscent of The Doors in their finer moments." Mark Anthony Brennan - Ride the Tempo

Bio

Archaics are a five-piece psychedelic art-rock band from Edmonton, Alberta.
Their most recent album, Soft Focus (2016 - Sweety Pie Records) is carefully orchestrated, displaying chemistry developed over nine years of playing together.  A cavorting atmosphere accompanies the listener through moments of kaleidoscopic hysteria; a tangible swing from a twisted frame of mind.  The past three years have consisted of notable presence and recognition within the Canadian arts community, with opening slots for bands such as July Talk, Dan Deacon, The Dandy Warhols, SUUNS, and Dead Meadow.  Actively introducing their caravanning circus to curious ears, the band has completed two tours across Canada tours and performed at festivals including UP+DT, Big Winter Classic, Vancouver Psych Fest, and Golden West Music Fest.“Archaics [Soft Focus] as a whole come off as scruffier, clangier and more mystical — not to mention more tangential! — than their ’60s predecessors” - Sandra Sperounes - Edmonton Journal July 2016.
Prior to the release of Soft Focus, Archaics released a split cassette with Montreal psych outfit Pachyderm (June 2016) on both Sweety Pie Records and Montreal Label, Brothers & Sisters Records.  Other Releases from the band include a LP, Archaics S/T (2014), and a split cassette with now defunct Edmonton Neo-Folk group, James Of Dark Wood (2014).  The band is currently arranging dates for summer and fall of 2018 throughout Canada and are working actively on their third album.
