Just the other day, I was talking to a friend about how we need to bring intimate lounge singing back. Nowadays, many singer-songwriters perform at large venues and even sometimes arenas. The days of catching a performer live at intimate venues such as the famed Cocoanut Grove are slim to none, but the style of the good ole days is alive and well.
Los Angeles singer-songwriter, Angela Parrish has a captivating voice that would fit perfectly in the confines of a small lounge or supper club. With musical inspirations coming from Carole King, Ray Charles, Eva Cassidy, Gregg Allman and Alison Krauss, the Kansas-born singer’s rich vocals have an authentic sound. Her songwriting commands your attention and resonates within.
Parish just released her debut EP, Faithful and Tall. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Jamie Candiloro (Ryan Adams, R.E.M., Willie Nelson), the six track album features Eric Heywood (Ray LaMontagne, The Pretenders) on pedal steel, Dani Moz on harmonies, and guest vocals by Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek. The EP is a hearty collection of music that speaks to you soul. Songs like “Firewalker” have an upbeat strut that will soon get stuck in your head, while the soulful slow moving sounds of “Runaway” will seduce your senses.
“The record Faithful and Tall is about strength, inspiration, bravery, and honesty, shares Parish. The songs came from my family’s experience with my father’s Parkinson’s Disease, my own experience with ending a difficult relationship, and ultimately finding great joy in loving another.”
You can stream Faithful and Tall via Spotify and purchase via iTunes.

sources. It was written for a friend who had gone through a period of hard times, and for a close family member who was hurting. I also faced several years of financial difficulty (I lived in my car when I first moved to Los Angeles), heartbreak, and struggling to believe in myself. I wanted to write an anthem that would speak to inner strength and the ability to prevail.
“The joy of creating my own music and the potential to emotionally connect with others really does pull me through the darkness, and I hope this song inspires and helps people find their inner Firewalker.

An authentic voice that invokes the purity and honesty of the quintessential singer/songwriter, self-described 'storyteller' Angela Parrish cultivates an engaging, intimate musical sensibility that combines the gently expressive sensitivity of her voice with her emotionally fluent and acutely observant lyricism. Creating an absorbingly contemporary artistic voice that draws on the rich influences of the likes of Carole King, Eva Cassidy, and Alison Krauss, Parish displays her deft touch on the piano as she offers a heartwarming paean to the uplifting, forgiving and joyous love that a special someone has given to her with 'Higher'.
Making a name for herself on the Los Angeles music scene with her Americana/roots influenced sound, Parrish has headlined at venues such as the Typhoon, Room 5, and the legendary Vitello’s Jazz and Supper Club, and was selected as finalist in the prestigious 2013 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song 'Higher'. - The Next 2 Shine
After concluding her glorious Upstairs at Vitello’s debut, singer-songwriter-pianist Angela Parrish said, “I want to emotionally move people and touch their souls in a positive way with my songs.” The multi-talented Angela certainly did that with the packed crowd at Vitello’s Jazz & Supper Club, with everyone beaming about discovering a performer on the verge of greatness.
Parrish sang some familiar songs, such as Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About” and Carole King’s “Smackwater Jack,” and you can hear their influence as Angela’s rich voice covered their songs. But it’s when Angela grooves to her own creations that the raven-hair songbird flies.
Although a sweet looking young lady, she is a commanding presence when she sits down at the piano and offers songs that showcase her storytelling talents along with her melodic-sassy-sophisticated voice. Parrish’s sound has both a vintage and contemporary quality to it, sort of if Carole King and Alicia Keys merged their vocal talents. That’s what Parrish offers with her spin on folk Americana music. She was supported by a great band — Tom Rizzo on guitar, Cooper Appelt on bass, Jose Perez on drums, and special guest Brian Clancy on tenor sax.
The performance started with “Higher,” the powerful potential hit Parrish wrote. More highlights came with other original songs such as “Noon in Denver” co-written with Greg Gordon Smith who joined her at the piano; “Change of Heart,” an “it’s over song” written with Tom Rizzo; “Rainproof” written with Mark Winkler; and “The Couple Down the Hall,” a love song she wrote about her parents. - The Tolucan Times
