Andre Mieux invites you to the club with his "urban electro" sound that is demonstrated on his latest single, "Off in the Club".
TeenSpot recently had an opportunity to sit down and chat with Andre. Check it out...
You personally describe your music as “Urban Electro”. How would you define that?
I think that a lot of electro records have a pop feel to them, even though we’re put in the pop category. I’m also placing an urban feel to it, where it has more of an R&B approach. Like a whole lot of music wrapped into one.
And your new single “Off in the Club” is an introduction to “Urban Electro”?
Yeah, that’s correct.
You also shot a video for “Off in the Club”. Did you enjoy that experience?
Yeah. Shooting the video was really an exciting experience. It was a day shoot. We started early in the morning and it ended late at night. The crew did a great job. The label did a great job. Tim Cruz directed it. It came out wonderful.
The more I talk to artists the more I hear about experimenting with their music and incorporating numerous genres into their sound. Is that an environment that you feel like you can thrive in?
Yeah, definitely. I’m always up to branching out and doing any type of music, you know? I don’t think that anybody should stay in their box. I’m open to all different kinds of music and this album also expresses what you just said – It’s all different kinds of music wrapped into one and all different kind of people will like it.
Your EP is due out in the Spring. Can you tell me about the other songs on the EP and some of the subject matter that you deal with?
I have a record called “Being Alone”. It talks about some of the day-to-day struggles that I go through. “Hold Me” is also another personal experience that I have with relationships. Then we have “Grove”, which is a club record that explores new ways of having fun and just letting go. You know, being free.
Music has really evolved quickly, especially on the business side in the last twenty years – from cassette tapes to CDs to digital music. I understand you have been involved in music from a very early age and you have witnessed a lot of this transformation. How have you had to adjust individually?
The learning grid that we all look to is the radio. What we hear or grow up with the stations that we listen to. When something starts to change, we’re able to hear that learning grid and change with it. If you’re in the process of making a record and you have something that inspires you and you feel that it will inspire somebody else you have to go back to that grid and say, ‘Will this fit?’ (Will it) match up with what I have? That’s what we did. We kept going back to the grid and sometimes it would match up and sometimes they wouldn’t. The ones that wouldn’t we knew wouldn’t be relevant for today.
Who are your top three musical influences and why?
Michael Jackson, R Kelly and Ginuwine.
I don’t know if Ginuwine goes into a legendary category but he definitely does in my book. I look at him as one of the greatest performers to have ever lived. When I have seen him, I have seen him about four or five times and when I saw him all he had was a mic and two dancers…and a DJ. He just knows how to control a crowd. Growing up and learning, I learned so much on how to be able to connect with the crowd, connect with an audience by watching his performances.
Michael Jackson, as we all know, for numerous reasons. R Kelly for his production and writing and his entertaining skills also.
Going back to your childhood, I understand you had family in the industry and were connected with music from a very young age?
I started playing piano in the church. So that was a lot of my time, learning the piano and I had to play hymns and hymns and more hymns every week in the church. Just growing up taking music lessons and everything pretty much revolved around music, whether it was listening to music with my family, and listening to Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, or whoever it may be or sitting at the piano, just stabbing at the piano trying to figure out a different tune.
You don’t think about it when you’re young or how much time was involved, but even when growing up having my mom wake me up at five in the morning to play for two hours before going to school. That was also a big factor in the growth of my musicality and learning. I guess the overall experience on trying to be a musician.
When you’re not making music, performing, what are some of your hobbies?
Going to the movies (laughs). In all honesty, the majority of my time is pretty much dedicated to music, you know, but when I do have a second off I like to go to the movies. Hang out with my family. Maybe play some basketball here and there.
You have also done some work in movies, scoring a film and even a little acting?
Yeah. I scored a film called Wigger. It’s about a Caucasian male who thinks he is African-American (laughs) but it’s a “dramedy”. It’s a good movie. I had fun working on the film. I enjoyed the music as well as the script. I’m also working on a newer project now called State of Control and that’s under the label I’m with. That should be coming out very soon as well.
Five years from now, where do you see yourself and what do you want to be doing…
Generating revenue as a musician.

He also has worked with Showtime Television on ‘Stunt Divas’ and Sid Burston Productions on ‘Get Thee Behind Me.’ He was a member of Trilogy Productions, whose team was responsible for placements on such projects as Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Akon, Jill Scott, Varsity FanClub, T-Boz, Keith Sweat, Dave Hollister, Bobby Valentino, Nick Lachey, 112, Nina Sky, Master P, DREAM, and 504 Boyz.
“I wrote my first single, Off In The Club because I wanted to create Urban Electro. A new movement that combines pop-electronic beats and puts something urban over the top of it, that way everybody will gravitate towards it.” says Andre. “I was motivated to write the song ‘Ready To Dance‘ by a YouTube video I saw of kids in Melbourne, Australia doing this hot dance called The Melbourne Shuffle. I had never seen it done in the US and it was a movement I wanted to be part of”.
Aside from performing, Andre is slated to participate on the scoring of an upcoming film titled ‘State Of Control.’
This thriving artist, Andre Mieux, has created a new twist to what R Kelly and Michael Jackson brought to the industry and he is ready to mix it up and take the world by storm with his sound.
I had the chance to ask Andre about things such as his interest in music, who he’d love to work with, and promoting his music. You can read about that below.
When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?
One of my earliest musical memories was when I was about 4 years old. My mother bought me an electric guitar player and I was so excited. Music’s always been a part of my life and my family. It was only natural that I wanted to pursue a career in the industry.
What drives and inspires you to do what you love?
It’s hard to explain but my drive to be an artist comes from the soul. It’s a feeling I can’t really put into words but we all experience it. That feeling when you know something is right. Aside from that Michael Jackson is definitely my biggest inspiration. He’s the epitome of a true artist. He was a singer, writer, composer, dancer and he performed like every show was his last. He’s legendary.
Do you find it easy to sing and perform? Does it come naturally for you?
When you’re doing something you truly love it definitely comes naturally. I’m pretty laid back but when I perform it’s a switch that comes on. I come alive with the energy from my dancers, the crowd, and the lights. Everything manages to come together in a beautiful way.
Besides music, what are some of your favorite things to do?
I’m a recording artist but I still enjoy doing simple things like playing basketball and going to the movies. I actually just saw Black Swan and it was an excellent film.
If you had the chance to work or record with anyone, who would you choose?
I would definitely say R. Kelly. As a solo artist he’s incredible but when he writes or produces for other people he’s just as amazing. I can always recognize his influence in a lot of today’s modern R&B and Pop artists.
How would you describe the sound of your music?
I refer to my music as “urban electro”. My music is urban, it’s pop, it’s all these elements coming together. I’ve created a new unique sound for a new generation.
How do you feel that you’re different from other artists in your genre?
I think my sound is what really sets me apart. It’s so eclectic and appeals to a variety of people.
What are some of your short-term and long-term goals you have lined out for yourself?
Some of my short terms goals would be generating massive buzz for my single “Off In The Club” and my EP “Top of The World”. My long term goals would be achieving platinum status and having a career that spans for years to come.
What are your upcoming plans for promoting your music and upcoming EP?
Right now I’m on the new artist hustle. There will be lots of touring, radio promotion, and great press interviews like this one. It’s all about getting my face out there and really connecting with the people. I want to hit every market possible. I’ll also be releasing a mixtape and more viral videos. I already have two cover videos posted on my YouTube channel, “Jar Of Hearts” by Christina Perri and “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. No only does Andre Mieux have a really cool name, but his music is just as hip.
Andre is your traditional pop/club singer who mixes catchy hooks, flashy beats, harmonizing vocals and an all-around uptempo vibe. His new single, “Off In The Club” is gearing up to be released and TeenChive had the opportunity to catch a sneak peak of the record.
We really think that if you love to dance in the club, you’ll like Andre’s music who cites Van Cliburn, Andre Watts, R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Lionell Richie, Phil Collins, and Ginuwine as some of his many musical influences.
