Anthem Events' marathon evening of music began with fresh-faced Alexis Babini, whose charming set filled the audience's ears with lyrics of love, flirting, and a little heartbreak. His song "High Hopes" had all the women in the room sneaking up to the dance floor. As Alexis left the stage, the room had a good buzz. - Northeast Performer Magazine
Boston based singer/songwriter Alexis Babini has generated quite a following in New England with his ear-pleasing brand of pop/rock. Equally adept with an acoustic guitar or sitting behind a piano, Babini manages to showcase all of his talents on this new release. - McKeesport Daily News (Pittsburgh, PA)
We first heard about Alexis from our new bartender friend Katie the night before at Good Times, who informed us he was a must-see. He must be a favorite over there, as later in the night bartender number 2 was displaying and singing the praises of Babini’s latest CD “Breaking It In” to festival-going couple. Though it takes a lot for me to be blown away by solo acoustic guitar, Babini held his own, putting on an entertaining set of upbeat poppy originals.

Alexis Babini’s songwriting is so damn good, he should have a friggin’ PhD in the art… but his bachelors will have to do. His latest release is a catchy, poppy collection of substance – complete with the hooks that attract so many listeners to his style.

UPON FIRST LISTEN, Breaking It In sounds like a nice enough, well-produced and polished EP from a talented young songwriter. But by the second time around, an underlying subtle complexity seeps into the listener and deceives with its seeming effortlessness. Think of James Taylor, or Peter Gabriel on "Solsbury Hill". The successful marriage of melody and lyrics is what makes an audience listen to the importance of a song, and not to its constructs. This can never be underestimated when it comes to affecting music.
Such is what we find on Alexis Babini's debut EP Breaking It In. Powerful, gripping melodies and simple, yet evocative lyrics are pervasive. Babini avoids a major pitfall for many songwriters: that dreaded second verse. This is evident on "Caroline", where he lulls, "In your room my disguise falls to the floor/This man becomes a boy/A sense of innocence comes back/And it somehow brings me joy." Combine this honesty with a tenor that whispers at one moment and soard the very next, and we find an artist who really owns his craft.
One item of potential criticism lies in the fact that all songs on Breaking It In are romatically based. And while there is nothing wrong with an album of love-based tunes, diverse lyrical themes are essential to making an audience want to listen to you always, as opposed to just when "in the mood' (Jack Johnson is a great example). By the same token, though, so many artists press their whole careers trying to write just one great love song. On Breaking It In we have six. Not bad at all. - Micheal Oliveri
The singer/songwriter genre tends to be filled with two different sides of styles. There are those writers that put out left of the dial labor of love’s that really have no mainstream appeal to them, and then there are those that put together great music with definite mainstream appeal. Boston’s Alexis Babini is one of the latter. His latest EP, “Breaking It In,” offers listeners a chance to hear great songs where the lyrics and music are both very well crafted while maintaining a pop/rock appeal making it an easy to listen EP. You will instantly be impressed as opener “Caroline” kicks in without hesitating to put Babini’s vocals on the spot just two drumbeats in. As the song comes together you’ll find that his vocals take you to all the right places while the music pounds it’s way into the chorus to drive them home. This simple pop, rock style continues making you sway and bounce along with him throughout the EP on tracks like “Take It From Me,” and “To Break Free.” As an added bonus you get the chance to hear some demo’s as well as Babini decides to put two very raw tracks, “Easy On The Eyes” and “Inside Out,” on here as bonuses allowing you the chance to come into his world a bit more and see the early stages of a song. By honing in on his songwriting craft and knowing and achieving the sound that he wanted to have, Babini has made a very solid EP that has done the trick that an EP is supposed to do and has peaked my interest in him and his music. I am eagerly anticipating what’s to come next from him after just one spin. Well worth checking out. - Guest List Magazine
‘Breaking It In,’ Alexis Babini (Redeye Distribution, 4 stars)
This six-song EP was released in early March, but it just came to my attention. Alexis Babini is a Boston-based singer/songwriter who most often appears with his acoustic guitar and/or piano, which he will likely do in support of this release. There’s a chiming, friendly full-band sound to these relationship songs.
Highlights include the power-poppy opener “Caroline,” the playful “Easy on the Eyes,” the falsetto-slide in the chorus of “Sometimes” and the pensive-but-poppy “Inside Out.”
