Bio
Alex Bien & The Secrets is a unique and innovate indie quartet melding high energy rock, with progressive folk lyrics.
After being playing a sold out show at Canadian Music Festival 2012, they are now opening for headlining act of Spring Music Festival, Neverending White Lights!
In the true spirit of the Canadian indie scene, the sweaty foot stomping musical performances of Alex Bien & The Secrets sees each member leave every ounce of their strength on stage and embodies one of the best lines from their debut EP: “you give yourself away, when there’s nothing to burn…”. The band is comprised of three Kingstonians and one Torontonian.
In the fall of 2010, Alex Bien turned his muddied boots from the backfields of the farm on Lake Huron towards the tall towers and windswept streets of Toronto. After creating a buzz with his unique sound and lyrical depth on many of the cities great open stages (Free Times featured artist, Supermarket Free F'all) Alex started to pull his favourite musicians together to start something special. Fast forward one year and the Alex Bien & The Secrets has honed themselves into a tight, exciting, almost magical force whose debut EP Deadly & Given (July 2011) is creating a following on famous stages across Ontario. At places like the El Mocambo, Zaphod’s and Kingston’s The Mansion, Alex Bien & The Secrets is building up an impressive musical resume.
Sounding like Sam Roberts Band, Spoon, The Pixies, Bright Eyes and Joel Plaskett thrown in a blender with some Neil Young for flavour, the Alex Bien Band is blessed with truly gifted musicians. Alex has been playing and teaching music for well over a decade, and pens the lyrics in the band also playing acoustic and electric guitar.
Bassist, Aaron Florendo, a hometown hero from Parkdale, adds his intuitive and melodic lines with an understated confidence. Multi-talented, he also fronts 'Heater Girl' as lead singer/bassist/guitar.
Percussionist, Shane MacPherson, is a graduate of the Humber Jazz Program. Also a songwriter, he produced his first album at the age of sixteen. His hard hitting drum lines surprise people when juxtaposed with his tasty beard and cool demeanor.
Charlie Bellemare plays lead Guitar and mandolin on the folk side of folk-rock, but also produced, engineered and mixed the band's debut EP. Performing in Toronto as the sidekick in Suitcase Sam's Suitcase Band, Charlie will have you humming his ear-worm licks for days.
Alex Bien & The Secrets is currently in the studio finishing new material for their second EP coming in Spring 2012.
