""What We Know Now" Review"

Another highly commercial
local band issues its debut
with a show tonight at the Fine
Line. Afterall began as an
acoustic duo a decade ago, but
the new “What We Know
Now” takes the group’s music
into the same romantic, spacy
realm as early Coldplay and
Jeff Buckley. These guys clearly
have put some thought and
care into the album, as it
sounds much more like a real
album as opposed to a mere
collection of songs. The first
cut, “Underground,” is one of
the finest disc openers I’ve
heard in some time. - St. Paul Pioneer Press - Ross Raihala

HOW WAS AFTERALL CREATED?

Afterall has lived two lives. The first "Afterall" was created in 1998 with a voice that wasn't quite developed yet and a couple acoustic guitars that didn't know the sonic future it would later have. Afterall's first official live show was at a little bar in St. Paul called Plums. The show was recorded and it showed signs of a couple musicians who were raw, but were on the verge of becoming good songwriters and even better performers. Sam and Tim spent the next 6 years writing acoustic based songs and becoming a staple in the Minneapolis music scene. 2006 was the year the 2nd Afterall was born. Eager to continue to expand their sound, Afterall added Sam's brother Joe to the mix. Joe's primary focus was to add bass to the sound, but also brought a symphony of ideas and influences. Soon thereafter, Joe's former bandmate, Justin, joined the band to add percussion and a new drive to Afterall's sound.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SOUND OF AFTERALL?

Sam and Tim brought many different musical influences and had immediate chemistry when they started writing songs. Influences such as U2, The Police, Alice In Chains, Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley fuse a sound that can be both intimite and sonic. Tim's vocals are remeniscent of Sting during intense songs and closer to Jeff Buckley in more intimate songs. Sam's guitar playing is influenced by Alice In Chains, Nick Drake and some of the more experimental delay sounds of U2. With the addition of Joe and Justin and their influences lying with The Red Hot Chili Peppers and 311, Afterall has been able to create a sound that is truly unique and unpretentious. While describing Afterall's sound in few words is difficult, the most accurate description would be "Acoustic Based Sonic Rock for the Soul".

WHAT ARE AFTERALL's RECORDINGS?

After writing and performing fifteen of our original songs for about a year and a half, it was time to go into the studio. The first recording from AFTERALL was a self titled, six song EP completed at Orphan Records in July of 2000. The goal of the EP was to focus on melodic, well-written acoustic songs. Since the recording of the EP, AFTERALL has written over 40 more songs and has released some of these on a live cd entitled "Afterall - Live At The Fineline 2003 to 2006". Since March of 2008, Afterall has been recording their follow-up entitled "What We Know Now". "What We Know Now" will be Afterall's first full band and full length album. The evolution from the first CD is astounding.

WHERE HAVE THESE GUYS PLAYED?

AFTERALL has played at numerous clubs in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. These clubs include; The Fineline, The Triple Rock, First Avenue, The Urban Wildlife, Chaing Mai Tai, The Freighthouse, Sweeney's, Gabe's, Plum's, Champps and they have also played at a few colleges and events. AFTERALL's sound has attracted many different demographics of fans because it is music people can relate to. The quality of Afterall's music has allowed them to open up for local acts such as G.B. Leighton and Tim Mahoney as well as national acts such as Edwin McCain.
