This Friday night Skellies, the local bicycle crew, presents a show featuring three of the most intriguing indie electro bands in Austin. Bali Yaaah, Knifight and FM Campers all bring a unique mix of influences to the synth rock genre and having them all on one bill together will really showcase just how far our local bands are pushing the genre forward....To complete the stellar lineup there’s Bali Yaaah who play psychadelic synth pop complete with organ leads, growling bass and howling vocals backed by drum machines and lofi distorted guitar.
Bali Yaaah recently released their first EP titled Never Early Always Fate and on this album the synths gets sinister. Mixing voodoo sounds with droning psychedelic guitar, the group has a darkwave tone that sends chills. The band also mixes eclectic percussion beats into the songs and draw inspiration from various types of world percussion. Check out “Fond of You” below for a sample of their sound. I’ve yet to see these guys play live but from what I hear it’s a great show. Crazy lights and motion support the music and make for an immersive experience.

Great things come in small packages for Bali Yaaah, at least regarding the local trio's debut EP, Never Early Always Fate, reviewed in "Texas Platters." Aside from the standard CD release, the band's selling "Usagi," a bunny-shaped 2-gigabyte USB drive and MP3 player that comes with complimentary headphones and is preloaded with bonus material that more than doubles the disco-doom experience, including a 2010 live set at the Ghost Room and a mixtape of demos and alternative tracks (www.baliyaaah.bandcamp.com). "The idea's been in my head for a while to do something on a flash drive," says frontman Chris Brown, the former Space Invader Orchestra leader who found the Chinese manufacturer through his job at Open Labs. "It went along with our dark, eerie sense." Bali Yaaah's currently working on a remixes EP and spooks Cheer Up Charlie's with A Sky Jet Black on Aug. 13

One step forward, two steps backward," intones keyboardist Chris Brown with a terror-alert urgency in "Call It, for Real," the lead track on Bali Yaaah's madcap debut, Never Early Always Fate. That's a fitting summation of the synth-pop trio's retro-futurism, a sci-fi swirl of syncopated drum machines, white-heat guitar, and near-dub bass. This isn't chillwave drivel, either. "The Shakes" channels the confrontational zeal of Suicide in its Krautrock consistency and deep-psych drone, while "Wait for Me" melts slowly with long-form post-punk gloom.

This Saturday, electro-psychedelic trio Bali Yaaah will drop their first EP, Never Early Always Fate, and celebrate in style with a midnight set at Skinny's Ballroom.
The EP is a credible glimpse into the droning mishmash of influences that Bali Yaaah has incorporated into their live show. Describing themselves as a "love child between the Velvet Underground and Depeche Mode," Bali Yaaah layer deep organ sounds, syncopated drum beats, blasted-out guitars and haunted house vocals reminiscent of Ariel Pink, then besmirch the entire thing with heavy reverb and lo-fi production. The result is a seductive, agitated and strangely danceable sound, which you can imagine sifting through in a dark, crowded room filled with fog machines in some god-foresaken locale.
You can preview the entire EP at Bali Yaaah's bandcamp. In addition to traditional CD and digital formats, the band is also releasing the album on a special edition USB MP3 drive. The "Usagi" flash drive holds 2 GB worth of material, which includes loads of bonus goodies, and you can plug headphones into it and play the record on the go. Better still, it is shaped like a bunny, so get one while they last. - The Austinist

Swirly 60's psych mixed with classic 80's synth pop that some describe as the love child of Depeche Mode and Velvet Underground, BALI YAAAH fuse fuzzy organs and drum machines with with echoey vocals to develop their dark and seductive new wave influenced pop ala Ariel Pink. These guys just released their debut EP, Never Early Always last month and have opened for Wild Nothing and Abe Vigoda. - Future Sounds
Psych and synth pop band Bali Yaaah – they’ve crossed a heavy-duty ’60s vibe with the best ’80s-inspired dark and dreamy dance synths that a new wave fan could ever hope for. - Laurie Gallardo - KUT

"The organ/guitar/bass trio Bali Yaaah perches precariously on the dividing line between fuzz rock and dance, with well-integrated electronic beats standing in for a proper drummer...they strike a flattering balance between the "Run Run Run" Velvets and Wire-Joy Division-Suicide postpunk at its most architectural. The big central organ sounds of "Shoot It" wash out all else on first listen, but revisiting what seems like a simple loop reveals new details in the guitar playing, which is pleasantly not overburdened by effects and adds a subtle warmth the music needs. As an ensemble they do a good job building across long, seemingly repetitive sections. The way the vocals sit back slightly in the mix really helps with the feeling Bali Yaaah is trying to create... the fact that you can't quite make them out makes them more mysterious and seductive. Bio
Bali Yaaah has a droning 60's psychedelia approach to 80's synth pop. Think love child between Velvet Underground and Depeche Mode. A fusion of deep fuzzy organs, syncopated drums, dubbed out bass, and blazing guitars, this ensemble establishes an enticing wall of dark dreamy sound. Driven by band leader and organist Chris Brown, complimented by guitarist Jonas Hodges, bassist John Dixon , and Jason Ferguson on drums, together the band evokes an alluring blend of art rock and psychadelia. Rhythmically, the group's influences come from around the world. Hints of African, Southeast Asian, and Latin traditions provide the backbone to many of the group's familiar, yet foreign compositions. Their highly recommended debut EP release, Never Early, Always Fate has set the stage as Bali Yaaah continues to break new ground in danceable psychedelic rock. Bali Yaaah has since released a collection of remixes by Texas producers and a recording of their first Live show in 2010. The band is currently working on a full length album due out Spring 2015.
