Bain’s soulful vibe
Let’s change up the vibe here and check out an intriguing, vibey new Sade-channeling soul group Bain. If you’ve been following the Friday Five lately, you already know that I think Jayanthi Kyle has a rad voice, and this is further proof that she can really change up her delivery to suit any number of styles. In Bain, she collaborates with guitarist and singer Davis Bain (hence the name) and keyboardist Erick “Afrokeys” Anderson. Find more music on their website. bainmusic.com - The Current (MPR)
“Love In Blue” is BAIN’s first official release, the members have been making music and performing with some of the mainstay groups of Minneapolis for more than a decade. BAIN is composed of members Davis Bain (vocals, guitars, production), Erick “Afrokeys” Anderson (keyboards, production), and Jayanthi Kyle (vocals). Davis Bain and Erick Anderson have been working together in various bands and collaborating on recordings since 2003, but it wasn’t until 2011 when the two joined forces with female vocalist Jayanthi Kyle that the band fully recognized the sound that created BAIN. The musical concept was conceived by Davis Bain, thus bearing his last name as the band’s title.
“Love In Blue” was released on September 16th, 2014. The 8-track album is awesome. There are very few groups these days making good music like this. There are none making it as good as BAIN. The rhythm section in particular, keeps everything “right there” where it’s supposed to be. Musical and vocal arrangements are superb with the background vocals being oh so sweet.
BAIN comes right out of the gate slamming with “Love In Blue”. The whole album is smooth, funky and jazzy; maintaining a sultry and sublime atmosphere. Imagine the Pat Metheney Group, Jeff Lorber and Sade getting together to make a record. It would probably sound much like this.
The production, musicianship, songwriting, and vocals on “Love In Blue” are so right on time it almost feels like you’re listening to a greatest hits album…and not a debut release!
BAIN has emerged unaffected by trends, with fresh new original songs transcending all genres. All tied together by that special ‘BAIN’ vibe. If you are looking for that “class above” in the way of easy, but intelligent listening, here is the ultimate addition to your collection. From “Plateau” to “Wherever”, “Love This Strong”, “Let Me Know”, “Love & Light” and “After”, it will send chills down your spine.
Each and every song has its own particular blend of DNA; jazzy, soulful, melodic, upbeat or down-tempo, with meaningful lyrics! What’s most impressive about BAIN and “Love In Blue”, is the seamless blend of genres. The chords and progressions are often undeniably jazz, the vocals are of a classic soul variety, and the rhythms keep a delicate funk quotient while the hooks are potentially ready to create pop singles.

Bain | Around the Sun
Few artists explore love through music as deeply as band members Davis Bain and Afrokeys in the lush, indie-soul artistry of Bain. The way Bain mixes genres and layers musical textures sends listeners into a depth of feeling that warms souls, expands hearts, and keeps your head bobbing.
In the band’s second album, Around the Sun, they dive deeper into funk and sophista-pop beats with songs that will get you dancing. They also convey a familiar moody, silky, vibing artistry in songs that are reminiscent of their debut album, Love in Blue. If their first album left you hopeful for the future of this enlightened band, you’re about to get a dose of sophomore empowerment.
Around The Sun reaches new depths with collaborations from other soulful, high-minded musicians including features from artists such as legendary turntablist DJ Rob Swift (The X-Ecutioners, Herbie Hancock), luminary saxophonist Walter Chancellor Jr. (Prince, Chaka Khan) and the alluring vocalist-songwriter Lady Midnight.
Bain took the space and time to fully capture the feelings of the cycles of love with an intention of uplifting and bringing joy to their listeners. Bain’s music makes you want to grab the hand of the ones you love and bring them close.
