We aren’t really too familiar with Bags, who is an artist from East Atlanta, but what we do know is that he has a dope single out right now titled “Geeker” that we stumbled upon. The track is a bass-heavy beat with Bags riding the rhythm with his flow and personality. Born in the United States to Eritrean parents, Bags is an Atlanta-based rapper, singer, songwriter and producer. As the son of a preacher, he spent a lot of time in church listening to sermons and occasionally singing in the choir.

At the age of 14, Bags discovered his passion for arts and began writing poems, novels and rhymes. During his teenage years, he dealt with temptations that were contrary to his strict religious upbringing and as he grew older he began to rebel against the life prescribed to him by his parents. Disheartened but not deterred, he turned to music as a creative outlet to channel his personal frustration.

Bags has shared stages with Young Dro, Nipsey Hussle and Trinidad James, as well as performed multiple times at the annual music and interactive festival SXSW in Austin, TX, which gave him the critical respect he wanted and deserved. Currently signed to DDB Entertainment, the street-savvy African rapper with American finesse is gearing up for another major release with the single “Geeker” leading the way. The track is perfect example of his unique flow and personality; a mid-tempo bass-heavy beat with Bags riding the rhythm with equal parts bravado, humor and innovative lyrics.

Afri-Culture caught up with Bags for a quick interview. Here is what he had to say:

How do you describe your music?

I would describe my music as fun but serious, conscious but catchy. I try to motivate and most importantly I try to always have an underlying message in it that people can relate to and grab something from.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration and why?

Tough question but if I had to choose one I’d say Eminem. Not only is he a dope writer and lyricist, but I can also relate to his struggle of not being believed in as an artist and taking that pain and pouring it into the music. I also like how he was the underdog but went on to become one of the greatest MCs in the game.

You grew up in a very strict and religious household. How did your parents react when you told them you wanted to become a rapper?

Not well at all and the interesting thing about that is that I understood where they were coming from, but I had to follow my calling. My parents risked everything, including all of our lives to leave Eritrea when our country was at war with Ethiopia. So they felt like me choosing rapping as a career was disrespectful to their sacrifices, in addition to our religion. I grew up in church, literally. If I wasn’t in school, I was in church and being that secular music was banned in our house, I think they were just disappointed with my decision. But they’re slowly coming around to accepting it, not so much what I’m rapping about, but they see how passionate I am. I think they thought it was just a phase and I’d grow out of it, but it’s been a minute now so they realize I’m serious.

In Atlanta, there are many people trying to break into the music/entertainment industry. What makes your music stand out?

I think what makes me stand out is my story. It seems like everybody wants to tell the same story but it’s your personal testimony that makes you different. Just like no 2 fingerprints are alike, no 2 people share the exact same story but we all share basic human emotions. I take what I’ve seen, experienced and learned and put it together so anybody can relate to those commonalities we all go through. And that’s what makes me different.

If you could collaborate with any musician (dead or alive), who would it be and why?

I’d say Bob Marley. I listened to him growing up a little bit, sneaking to hear something my older sister was listening to. He was a liver of life, carefree, was passionate about what he did and respected the art form of music. You could see and hear how much he loved creating songs and with him being from another country but connecting so many people to his homeland through his music inspires me to do the same.

You said, “Music is all I do. I put so much into every aspect of my career that if I’m not doing music I feel like something is wrong.” But if you could choose any other career to pursue other than music, what would it be?

I honestly don’t see myself doing anything else, but if I had to choose another career, it’d probably be a comedian. I love when people love my songs but when I can make somebody cry laughing the feeling is unexplainable in my circle I’m the ‘fool.’

Being born and raised in the United States, how do you stay connected to your Eritrean roots?

My family and my community. Being that I’m the first generation raised in the US, my family keeps us very entrenched in the traditions back home. Also with my father starting the first Eritrean church in Atlanta, I grew up around other kids and families from Eritrea so it was only when I went to school that I felt removed from my roots.
