"Hootie Phenomenon"

Issue #20.28
07/11/2007 - 07/17/2007

"Something in the music of Zach Fowler reminds me of the early days of the Hootie phenomenon in the Carolinas, when we had bands the likes of Cravin Melon, Edwin McCain and Dave Matthews Band playing regular club gigs and gaining huge regional followings with a mixture of classic rock and acoustic pop. That radio-friendly sound has come back into fashion on the radio with artists such as Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, John Mayer and more, and Fowler sounds like he’s in the early phase of finding his own similar sound on his recent album, Caught Inbetween. Also appearing are the Americana-leaning band Due East, hip-hop nouveau soul from Peace and the clear-voiced Elizabeth Allen.

Discover the radio-friendly sound tonight at Scandal's, 527 Cherry Road...

"Sudworks Taphouse"

Issue #22.11
03/18/2009 - 03/24/2009

"Though The Essentials seem to have dropped his name from the marquee, young singer-guitarist Zach Fowler still fronts this local pop-rock band; it’s his boyishly endearing vocals and tendency toward vaguely reggae-ish rhythms that sets The Essentials apart. The Essentials’ sets combine original tunes from their CD Caught In Between with like-minded covers by Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews and even a Hootie or Edwin McCain tune or two, making them a collegiate band that even alumni can get into." - The Free Times - Columbia's Free Weekly

"Whisky a Go-Go"

"Caught In Between gained local acoustic rocker Zach Fowler and his band tons of fans in the Carolinas, one college bar at a time. The disc, released late last year, sold out of its initial pressing months ago (though it’s still available online in digital form), a good sign for the group’s commercial potential. This summer, Fowler and company will be taking their reggae-tinged pop-rock far from their native Southeast; there’s a gig at the Whiskey in Los Angeles listed on the band’s upcoming calendar for early July." - The Free Times - Columbia, SC

"Essential Zach"

"Fowler and mates zigzag through genres with an honest flair. Whether it's folky-pop, blue-eyed reggae or rock, the band tells truths."

-Otis Taylor - "The State" - Columbia, SC

"Rosewood Crawfish Festival"

Issue #21.18
04/30/2008 - 05/06/2008
Article: Rosewood Crawfish Festival: Cracker, Cowboy Mouth Headline Growing Event.

"Zach Fowler and the Essentials take the stage at 12:30 p.m.; Fowler mixes classic AM radio influences with modern pop-rock a la Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz and produces a slick, radio-ready sound."

-Kevin Foster - The Free Times - Columbia's Free Weekly

"CD Release Party"

Issue # 21.35
08/27/2008 - 09/02/2008

"Zach Fowler and the Essentials release their debut album Caught in Between tonight; these local USC boys have been making a name for themselves with their radio-friendly jams a la Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews Band and Jason Mraz. They’re pretty darn good at it, too. It definitely wouldn’t be a huge stretch to think about passing by a freshmen-girls’ dorm on a Saturday and hearing these guys blasting out of several windows. And if you get that audience, well, you’ve won the game, haven’t you? Bootleg and DJ Jon Ruff open."

- Travis Baker - The Free Times - Columbia's Free Weekly

"Beats For Eats"

"Music is always best when it carries a message or champions a cause. (See FarmAid, Tibetan Freedom Festival, "We Are The World.") The artist performing at the Beats for Eats charity benefit concert - impressively organized by students from Brookland-Cayce high school - are out to eradicate (or at least alleviate) child hunger, rocking to raise funds and donations for the Feed the Children foundation... Among the philanthropists: Upstate singer-songwriter Corey Crowder; the Eric Skeleton-led Marry a Thief; power-pop quintet The Decade; the Jason Mraz-esque Zach Fowler & the Essentials; and positive hip-hoppers The Elements. "

Bio

Sharing the stage with acts like Sister Hazel and performing on stages such as the Whisky a Go-Go in Hollywood, CA are just a few of the many strides Zach Fowler & the Essentials have made in the last two years. With influences from Jack Johnson to O.A.R. and drawing comparisons to Sublime and Jason Mraz, the band moves easily from melodic acoustic numbers into funky jams with and occasional mix of hip-hop and reggae.

Zach Fowler began playing and writing music for audiences in 2001. After playing in several groups, Zach decided to pursue a solo career in 2005. Following two years of steady solo shows, Zach joined forces with bassist and guitarist Evan Tyler and drummer Patrick Grice in early 2007 to form the trio known as Z.F. & the Essentials. In February of 2008, the group added pianist / percussionist / trumpet player Brandon Kersbergen to the mix. Soon to follow was Jordan DeBruhl on lead guitar and bass in the fall of 2008. Together the group has evolved into a sound that is unlike any other.

The group has been called “the next Hootie phenomenon” by The Free Times (Columbia, SC’s Free Weekly) and has been noted as one of the regions most talented and promising acts. With a unique sound blending a number of genres and the smooth vocals of Zach Fowler, the group has been playing countless shows from Florida to New York to Los Angeles. Zach and the Essentials released their first full length album, "Caught In Between" in August of 2008. Having sold out of it’s initial pressing in less than a year, tracks such as "No Surprise", "Stand (In My Way)" & "Gamecock Anthem" are quickly becoming fan favorites and have received airplay on WXRY 99.3 FM and WARQ 93.5 in Columbia, SC. The group is planning to release their sophomore album, “Back 2 Square One” in early 2010.
