"They play rock. That's it. Simple, right?""

Sometimes it seems like no one plays rock music anymore. Every band out there is shooting for some sub-genre or lofty artistic ideal. Most fall short, and people that claim to play straight up rock tend to have an affinity for covering Lynyrd Skynyrd songs. What ever happened to some good old-fashioned, original, don't-have-to-think-too-hard, rock and roll? I always loved seeing The Clarks when they came to State College. Were they in any way earth-shattering? No, but they were fun. Spotobe's next Millennium Music Conference Noteworthy is The Jupiter Deluxe (click to hear the entire EP) from New York City, and they play rock. That's it. Simple, right?

Their self-titled EP, released in January of last year, reminds me of 1990’s rock music, and I say that lovingly. This is all rock with no filler. On “I’ve Got a Woman,” they kind of remind me of Jet before Jet got annoying. The Jupiter Deluxe lists mostly acts from the 60’s and 70’s as their major influences, but this is music I feel like The Toadies would listen to while they were sitting around drinking beers.

Faceplant is probably the best track off of The Jupiter Deluxe. It’s got a chorus that would be perfect to belt out at a bar set on top of a soaring lead guitar part. The Jupiter Deluxe will be playing at Tara Station on Valentine’s Day with Adamo Drive, Girls LIke Cigarettes, Gold Streets and Puffer Fish.

"Definitely a band worth keeping an eye on..."

The Jupiter Deluxe are one of those bands that are hard to place, what can be said though is that their music is firmly rooted in rock, different songs have different sounds and this EP is almost a tribute to some of the greats itself, spanning in styles from 60s pop (read: Beatles), to 70s glam through to hard rock through to more contemporary music from the UK.

They certainly aren’t doing what a lot of the bands in the New York scene are up to at the moment, the vocals are catchy and easy to sing a long with but might be seen as a little bit to straight-forward to some people. If I were to criticise this at all, I’d say it’s the band rather dull look but this isn’t going to effect your CD listening. Whilst they clearly value Faceplant as one of their best songs, my personal favourite is the in your face rocky track that is Koreatown which is relentlessly fun from the first chord.

I also think they do an excellent cover version of Ray Charles’ “I got a woman”, this is just a 5 track EP, so we’re yet to see whether the band can take their tightness through to an album and make more good songs but I think they can and it’s definitely a band worth keeping an eye on. - Music Never Died

"Rock n' Roll to the core!"

The Jupiter Deluxe offers a true American slice of rock n roll on their self-titled debut EP, which will keep you completely entertained with its straight up and forward assault. What the band offers is not necessarily unique but their vibe is timeless because they incorporate a hybrid of sounds that reflects a decade span from the 60’s to present day. Frontman Mark Rinzel has that perfect “ruffed up a bit” vocals that can hit the hooks in stride or tear it up solo, giving the EP an injection of swagger. The rest of the trio consist of Colin Grubb cranking out solid guitar riffs and the in your face drumming of Tommy DeVito. The Jupiter Deluxe offer 5 songs in 17 minutes that rock along and regardless of the setting sound great, especially the fiery-punk version of the Ray Charles classic “I Got A Woman”. With the right break and the recent resurgence of gritty rock n roll, The Jupiter Deluxe have the goods to be successful in the current modern era so make sure you check out the EP and be on the lookout for a full length.

"A winning combination of memorable melodies, lotsa loud guitars, and passionate singing."

By Dan MacIntosh

As soon as “Bachata Rosa” blasts out of the speakers, just two songs into The Jupiter Deluxe’s self-titled EP, it’s hard not to breathe a large sigh of relief and say, “At long last, an honest to goodness rock & roll record.” That's because this Brooklyn band lets loose with pure rock joy during these five quick tracks.

Vocalist Mark Rinzel hearkens back to Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander, who knows well how to make a rock & roll scream sound melodic. The group even has the guts to take on Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman." But instead of the gospel-meets-soul, which drives Brother Ray’s original version, The Jupiter Deluxe turn it into a garage rock rave-up. And rather than hearing Charles pound the piano, Rinzel throws his raspy voice all over a wall of noisy guitars.

This group also writes its own fine songs as well. “Sleazy Thieves” is a slow-burner, which incorporates a bit of a majestic quality into crunching rock. Like “Sleazy Thieves," “Koreatown” deals with lusty sex. Only this time these feelings are expressed in a far more positive way.

Rinzel’s voice brings back fond memories of Cheap Trick again and again, but whereas that Chicago band mostly channeled a whole lot of The Beatles, The Jupiter Deluxe has bit of blues rock running through its veins. Even so, the wordless vocal harmonies that introduce “Bachata Rosa” are straight out of The Beatles' early records.

This disc’s opening song, “Faceplant," is the most unrepresentative track on the EP. It’s filled with words of encouragement, such as: “It don’t make a difference if you fall on your face, only if you finish what you first begun.” This musical pep talk differs markedly from the passionate sex talk comprising much of this CD, yet it's a nice change.

Seinfeld's George Costanza once complained about rock stars and their complicated shoes. And while I’m not certain musicians’ footwear is any more complex than the average citizen’s, there are artists in the music business who spoil rock’s beautiful simplicity by incorporating too many unnecessary embellishments. The Jupiter Deluxe is like a basic, but highly comfortable, set of sneakers. These five songs may remind you why you fell in love with rock & roll in the first place. Not because it is nerdy scientist smart, but because it hits a primal pleasure center that nothing else can quite reach. The Jupiter Deluxe’s simple formula is a winning combination of memorable melodies, lotsa loud guitars, and passionate singing. These boots were made for good rockin’, that’s for sure. - Indie-Music.com

""If you like good old Rock n' Roll, The Jupiter Deluxe is all that and more!""

Rock n' roll purists like typically say that “music is lost... Read More” in the current days. I am not one of them! But, if I was, for me the salvation would be The Jupiter Deluxe. This band, hailing from Brooklin, in New York, makes the sound that all fans of dirty and noisy 70's rock have been missing for a while.

Immediately upon coming into contact with the band's music, we already we find a series of familiar elements. The sound is rough and direct, showing possible influences from 60s as well as 70s rock, and even from the early days of New York punk. In 2008 the band released an EP, titled The Jupiter Deluxe EP, with five tracks that span the Beatles' pop-rock, Cheap Trick's 70's rock and a clear influence from early NY punk. - Fábio Gianesi, Sad Sick Little World

"Run don't walk to get your hands on this EP!"

I had the privelege and opportunity to play some shows with them and ever since I got my hands on their CD it's been in my top rotation on my iPod. This is one of the best rock bands to come along in a long time. I never thought a three piece could ever sound as thick as the Police....until I saw The Jupiter Deluxe. Run don't walk to get your hands on this EP. "Faceplant" is contagious. I can't stop singing the song. It reminds me of classic Cheap Trick. Mark Rinzel's voice is inviting, it makes you want to sing your best rendition of Robin Zander when he kicks into the chorus. "Bachata Rose" is a great driving song. Heavy drums with crunchy guitars. "I got a woman", is a classic song turned into a heart stopping, punked out, rock song. Ray Charles would be proud! "Sleazy Thieves" has a thumping John Bonhamesque groove with guitar changes that remind me of the Beatles' Helter Skelter. An all around sexy song that would fit well with girls swingin from poles (no offense to ladies who make their living that way). "Koreatown" is another solid song that that packs a punch right out of the gate. Funky drums start off the song which sets the mood for the rest of the song. Colin and Mark crank it up and deliver a sweet piece of rock and roll pie. Hands down this is an EP worthy of any party, bar or arena. Catch these guys now while you can still afford the ticket prices. If you are aren't lucky enough to catch a show....do yourself a favor and buy their EP. Your ears will thank you!

"I loved this song from the intro to the exit...Fantastic vocal delivery. Lyrics are easy to connect with on an emotional level. The melody is strong and very memorable. Even the production and mixing was superb! Can't say enough about the musicianship, great chops!"- Taxi.com on "Faceplant" - Taxi.com

Bio

When Neon Thrills broke up in 2005, frontman Mark Rinzel became another orphan of the New York scene. Lost in a sea of $90 haircuts, Rinzel discovered fellow wayward Guided By Voices-fan Colin Grubb (guitar), who had just moved to New York for no good reason, in a basement on Stanton Street. The two liked each other.

By some stroke of extreme good fortune, drummer Tommy DeVito fell into the mix through a short-lived, ridiculously-named Led Zeppelin-tribute band (The Back Door Men) the boys had thrown together. After a successful rendering of Zeppelin's II at Arlene's Grocery, the group decided to work on their own material. The Jupiter Deluxe formed in February 2006. A debut EP release in early 2008 put the band on the map, and a theme-song commissioned by VH1 came soon after.

In the summer of 2009, Rinzel produced an unnofficial, unnauthorized Matador Records Tribute show in Brooklyn. This was little more than an excuse to play a set of GBV tunes, and it was great fun. It also brought Wisconsin-bred wunderkind Waylan Daniel (bass) and longtime friend and Neutron Drivers tunesmith Mike Cecchini (guitar) into the group.

The result? A hybrid of select 60's/70's vinyl classics, with a healthy dose of indie-rock self-awareness for good measure. You'll hear traces of The Beatles, AC/DC, Oasis, Cheap Trick, The Kinks, Sugar, Guided By Voices, Big Star, Tom Petty, Raspberries, The Animals, The Jam, The Who, Badfinger, David Bowie, U2, T. Rex, The Knack, The Stone Roses, and The Verve. You may wonder why no one else bothered to throw all that together for you. Or you may just be grateful they did.
