"-- April 26, 2004"

"After hearing the booze-stained lyrics and American roots-influenced sound of the Devil Makes Three, you may think that good ol' Mr. Johnson wasn't the only one who sold his soul to the Prince of Darkness down at the crossroads. This Santa Cruz trio blend classic country, ragtime, bluegrass, and folk with their own fiery attitude and a sincere approach that create the sound and feel of a dusty old 78, but with an immediacy that's unforgettable. Acoustic guitar, upright bass, and banjo weave with tightly knit vocal harmonies in songs that'll have you tapping your foot and humming uncontrollably - particularly "The Bullet," "Graveyard," and "Old No. 7," which Jack Daniel's should use as its jingle."

-Sean McCourt, San Francisco Bay Guardian

"This acoustic trio bridge different musical eras without the camp common in nostalgic sounds, nor do they coast on cliches. Soulful roots music instead of 10 carefully calculated reproductions of the past, The Devil Makes Three is a deviant middle finger to all Johnny-come-lately bluegrass listeners."

-Punk Planet #56 - punk planet magazine

" The group's music cuts a wide swath that touches everyone from their hipster contemporaries to grannies here and yon.... It's folk, but a mean kind of jug-band folk, spiked with whiskey and dust."

-Wallace Baine, Santa Cruz Sentinel - Santa Cruz Senitinal

"Tour, Releases and The Devil Makes Three"

Tour, Releases, And The Devil Makes Three
Feb 11, 2009
Story by: Krista N. Levy
Booze-y swampabilly and voodoo bluegrass only begin to describe the roots stew of the Devil Makes Three. Set to release their next album, Do Right Wrong, on May 5, and a 7-inch, "Aces And Twos"/"Help Yourself," March 24—both on Milan—the drummer-less trio scatter banjo, harmonica, and upright bass across vigorous punk rock and old-time folk.

The band have spent seven years building up their fanbase through constant touring, and they've got another spring western swing all set to give you another chance to swig some whiskey with 'em.

"The Devil Makes Three: New Tour"

NEW SINGLE PLUS MARCH/MAY LIVE DATES
From the musical gumbo pot of slide guitar, harmonica, and tenor banjo on their self-titled debut, it's hard to believe that Devil aren't from some backwoods swamp. Nevertheless, songs like "Old Number Seven" mix buoyant acoustic guitars and booze-drenched lyrics for a potent concoction of hangover music...With their raucous, energetic live set, the combination has definitely proven successful - all the while appealing to surprisingly disparate crowds. - BPM Magazine

The Devil Makes Three
For the past seven years, The Devil Makes Three have garnered fans the old school way, playing a city, making friends, conquering fans and moving on. Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio - consisting of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean - brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm and alive with three part harmonies, which is pleasingly dissimilar to most other bands in modern music.
On March 24, The Devil Makes Three will release the Aces and Twos 7" of two songs: SIDE A: "Aces and Twos" and SIDE B: "Help Yourself." Both of these songs were recorded in Vermont last December and January, and these versions are only available on this limited edition, 500-quantity, hand numbered 7". No mp3s or anything online is planned, and they will never press more than 500. These versions will only exist here, but there are new versions of the songs on their forthcoming full-length record.

With their goal of being "an acoustic band, but to play our shows like a rock show," The Devil Makes Three offer a different idea of what acoustic music could be. Mixing styles ranging from the ragtime and country music of the 1920s and '30s, to the rock-and-roll and punk music of their adolescence, The Devil Makes Three pushes boundaries. Citing influences as varied as Steve Earle, Reverend Gary Davis, Memphis Jug Band and Django Reinhardt, the band combines tight vocal harmonies with idiot-savant, finger style guitar to create an exciting and original sound.
