Bio
A sincerity of spirit imparted in memorable melodies and true to life lyrics: New Mexico-based singer-songwriter Shane creates reflective narratives rich in hooks, heart and authenticity.
With SHANE, his eponymous new release, the essence of his “Soulful Americana” is communicated through an array of electric and acoustic guitars, an airtight rhythm section, evocative strings and a celestial choir. Front and center are Shane’s confiding vocals, deftly crafted songs and exceptional artistry.
Shane’s previous self realized releases earned him notable accolades as Best Musician and Best Male Vocalist in Albuquerque in 2013. “For my first two albums I learned the process of writing and creating songs but I knew I could only go so far,” says Shane.
To advance his sound to the next level, he reached out to producer, engineer, songwriter and musician Stacy Parrish, whose extensive resume includes T-Bone Burnett, Neko Case, Elvis Costello and Randy Newman. As the essential co-conspirator, the multiple Grammy-Award winning Parrish – who maintains studios in New Mexico and Sweden - became a contributor to both the songs and the sound.
After tracking the core demo in New Mexico, the pair booked Red Star Studios in Los Angeles where key players including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) and percussionist Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt) were added to the mix. In Sweden, Stacy Parrish sweetened the tracks with key embellishments including strings and the Act of Grace Choir. Thanks to these contributions, SHANE became a project that Parrish explains, “Sounds much bigger than it cost because of its ‘sweat equity.’”
Shane is from small town America; Moriarty, New Mexico, a high desert town whose major cultural event is an annual Pinto Bean Fiesta. He excelled as the local high school football hero, but at 17, he learned some rudimentary chords on the guitar from a buddy and was instantly hooked. “It ignited this crazy passion that was stronger than sports. I wrote my first song that day,” he remembers. Impressively prolific, Shane reserves his morning hours for meditation and songwriting. Consequently, he and Parrish had over 50 songs to select from for the full-length release.
“I’m a simple man who wants a heart of gold,” he sings in the country inflected “Sugar and Spice.” Maybe so, but his influences are complex and multi-layered and include collegiate studies in comparative theology and English literature “Philosophy has had a big impact on the way that my songs are going to affect people,” he notes.
As a full-time musician, Shane performs up to 225 gigs annually, providing him with sharply tuned audience response. “It gives me unadulterated feedback for the overall feeling of people in the room and how they are responding,” Shane adds.
“In Eastern philosophy they emphasize the concept of karma, that whatever you give out comes back to you. This has a huge impact on everything that I do. In my songwriting I always want to be positive so that positive comes back.”
