Rome Will Burn – Rome Will Burn – EP Review
A glamorous and glitzy electro-pop sound is emanating out of Los Angeles, CA – all stemming from the wild & exotic rhythms and melodies from the duo behind the music in Rome Will Burn. They’ve just released their debut self-titled EP, and as soon as it starts you’ll have a great understanding as to why this band is already creating a solid-buzz out there in music-land…these are single-worthy tunes all throughout the record.
No kidding – they’ve already surpassed 17,000 fans on the Facebook page, which is incredible. What’s also incredible is their bio! I wasn’t kidding before, and I’m not now either; I’ve written some-hundreds of bios myself – but I think this one takes the cake – that’s a novel. I know a novel when I read one. Their story is one that would take a tree’s worth of paper to fill for sure…a story of two souls born to make music on long roads that eventually weave together permanently to now create the music in Rome Will Burn. It’s a long story – but it’s a good read and really gives you the history behind how this music, band and EP have all come together at long last.
They’ve made a solid choice in combining their talents. The dynamic, pulsing rhythm of the opening rhythm in the music of “Chameleon” already puts a spotlight on Carlton Moody’s ability to put together a killer beat & melody; equally impressive is how lead-singer Alyssa Suede has fit her vocals into the flow. Smartly matching the energy in the music, her voice snaps quickly to the beat & music…she’s part angel, part Rihanna, part robot…and don’t get me wrong, I mean Rihanna in a good way…and yes, robot too. What I’m saying is she has the excellent ability to really get technical with her approach and get right in there on “Chameleon” like she’s another element of the music and really carries a lot of the rhythm through the vocals on this opening tune. Incidentally, it’s also the closing-tune in a “(Clean Version)” – so rest assured good people – if you’re already loving the tune, you’ll get yourself a double-dose of this wild-electro-ride.
I knew right away in listening to “These Three Words” that there would be almost no hope in me finding a track I’d like better on this record – that’s how powerful this song is when you hear it upon impact. The electro-assembly from Moody is MASSIVE…the swells in low-end sound through the chorus are gigantic…and there is NO DOUBT that were it not for the incredible music that this track could not do all of the amazing things that it ends up doing…I want that on record. And I want that on record BECAUSE…I gotta admit…I almost feel like Moody could be overlooked as the truly equal-half he is in this music of Rome Will Burn…because when you hear a performance like what Suede puts in on “These Three Words” – it’s nearly impossible not to fade away into the background of everyone’s mind. She is beyond beautiful on this song…the emotional content in the lyrics is so well-delivered through her singing…perfect as perfect gets. She’s got a fantastic sound to her voice that is close to someone like Ellie Goulding,…but there is something very similar in how smart their instincts are in the writing and where they place the energy, emotion and added emphasis in just the rights spots of the music. Spot-on performance from both these two entities, proving that the sum-total of their talents is paramount to that of which any of their possible individual efforts could be.
And WHAT? Rome Will Burn…NICE TRY. I can totally understand that you’d assume a bearded-guy like me that sits in a chair writing about music all day long wouldn’t get up and dance to “Waging Romance.” I’m not offended…I get why you’d assume that….BUT YOU’RE WRONG. I’m all-over this beat; some of the most innovative twists through what Moody is creating…wicked combinations of beats & strings – and once again Alyssa Suede is smooth as silk in her delivery and creates one of the most insatiable vocal-rhythms I’ve heard on record this year. “Waging Romance” is catchy as all-hell and a pure delight to listen to…and much the same is true of the following tune, “Live By The Beat.” On the latter-tune, I was a little mixed at times when it came to the lyrics…I think examples like in the second verse are standout highlights of the best, while at other-times were a little more implied through the rhythm of the music and somewhat redundant through the words added…if that makes any sense. I suppose you could just as easily argue that they were ‘fitting,’ – and they do…just comparatively I thought there were more interesting lines throughout the other tunes. Besides…it’s all about having a great-time…and I get that; it’s only because I’m a writer of these word-things myself that I’m always listening for a little more and looking for the lyricism to shine – not all songs are about that. “Live By The Beat” and “Body Language” aren’t about that – they truly ARE about fitting the vibe and really bringing in that extra melody to the overall rhythm in their combination. “Body Language” especially – the wordage here is truly minimal, yet Suede is no-less busy that Moody is…the words become a hypnotic-rhythm and their repetition really plays a part in how this combination works – for the record, I do ‘get it.’ BUT…that being said…I think there’s shining examples of lyricism on “These Three Words” and “Waging Romance” that will satisfy the people like me that crave that – and I think it’s a solid-move on the part of Rome Will Burn that they’ve made accessible music from many angles that can appeal to many people out there throughout the playback of this record.
Rome Will Burn is definitely on the right path…the tone, performances, sounds, composition and flow…it’s all here and even though when you read the history, you know it didn’t happen overnight…but if you’re anything like me you’ll be glad that it eventually DID. It’s a sparkling effort in production and an EP full of vibrant & versatile performances with something that’s bound to audibly-appeal to most everyone out there looking for a solid new rhythm & groove in their music accompanied by the confident sound of a singer that brings it all to that next-level through the combination of talent, hard-work, dedication…and the pure-love for making incredible music to share with you all.

Rome Will Burn are an electronic/pop duo hailing from Los Angeles. They consist of vocalist/songwriter Alyssa Suede and DJ/violinist Manifesto. Alyssa is the sister of Beck, and their father David Campbell acts as producer/arranger on this EP. After leaving drama school to pursue music, Alyssa became a guitarist and achieved success as a singer/songwriter, appearing at SXSW and Sundance as well as winning awards for her videos to Falling From Mars and Hollow (3D).
Manifesto started out in the classical world, studying violin as a child and gaining international renown performing to audiences around the world. He decided on a different path eventually, becoming a trance/progressive DJ whilst incorporating the electric violin. After becoming popular on the underground scene, he became a producer and collaborated with Seal, Benny Benassi and Paul Van Dyk amongst many others.
They formed in 2013 and this EP is their debut release. First track Chameleon is a strong example of their musical style. It’s a mid paced pop/electronica track with Manifesto’s Gypsy violin playing incorporated throughout to give it a unique sonic flavour. This is combined with synths and percussion, handclaps providing a four to the floor pulse which becomes a kick drum on the second verse.
Alyssa has a powerful, distinctive voice that is slightly reminiscent of Sia and grabs you immediately. The song is about a two faced character who she finds difficult to resist nonetheless: “Guess I like playing with danger, till you go and change your colours again…”.
The verse bursts into an anthemic chorus that lodges in the memory instantly: “You spin me round and I don’t know where to go…”. It works excellently as a commercial pop track for radio and would also go down well in the clubs, as I’m sure was intended.
These Three Words is another finely crafted track that uses a similar quiet verse/big chorus structure, though this is more mellow and romantic. It features another superb vocal performance from Alyssa, who shows her large vocal range on the sky-scraping chorus. The lyrical hook is simple effective “I love you, I do…you came into my life as soft as a butterfly…”. It’s such a strong chorus that it is another potential single.
Waging Romance starts out in a way similar to Chameleon, with a haunting violin melody interweaving with Alyssa’s vocal. Then the pulsing beat develops into a full dance groove on yet another memorable chorus, which gives the track a big lift. After the second chorus there is a violin solo which provides an unexpected contrast and works well. Rome Will Burn have a real gift for consistently great pop hooks and this is another one.
Live By The Beat continues the high quality, and this electro-dance/pop track seems particularly suited to the dancefloor with a pounding kick drum. This is the kind of song Lady Gaga would kill for, and I’d be surprised if these songs aren’t on their debut album, as they are simply too good for just an EP.
Body Language is the most musically diverse track here, starting out electro dance with a see-saw synth riff that draws you in, then morphing into a funk guitar section with Alyssa laying down an unpredictable but highly effective vocal melody. Another violin section combined with vocoder and spoken word elements thrown into the mix further add to the heady brew, all held together by the addictive “Work that body language…” chorus hook. This one is a lot to take in on first listen, but acts as a real grower.
Overall, this is a fantastic debut release from a pop/dance duo who have carefully cultivated and developed their sound in the studio and are already the ‘finished article’. The combination of Alyssa Suede’s voice and Manifesto’s Gypsy/classical influence makes for a unique sound that will help them stand apart from the crowd. Several of these tracks would make excellent singles, and Alyssa being Beck’s sister will not hurt in terms of publicity! No nepotism is necessary though, Rome Will Burn stand out as a musical force to be reckoned with and you’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the future.

Alyssa Suede might not share a last name with her older brother, Grammy award-winning musician Beck, but she shares the same dad.
In a word, Alyssa Suede is “electrifying.” - Me You World— Sara Ventan LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, October 14, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Alyssa Suede might not share a last name with her older brother, Grammy award-winning musician Beck, but she shares the same dad. Beck redefined rock in the mid ‘90s when Suede was just a little kid. Now she’s all grown up and taking the electro-pop scene by storm - driving it, full gear, with her new project Rome Will Burn.
Before feeling the magnetic pull to the family business, Suede spent her childhood in ballet studios and on ice training for the Olympics, where she nursed a love for the music she skated to: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Stravinsky. Her passion for the classics never abated and Suede found it to be shared by internationally renowned DJ /electric violinist Manifesto, the other half of Rome Will Burn and Suede’s perfect counterpart. Taking their passion for classic and folk elements and infusing them into expertly crafted electronica – it’s simply not enough to categorize Rome Will Burn as the next step in a musical evolution. It’s more like a revolution, according to their fans. And they have fans in high places.
The first was Suede’s father, composer/arranger David Campbell who promptly took on the band even though his plate was already full working on projects with artists like St. Vincent and Taylor Swift. Says Campbell of RWB, “One of the reasons I enjoy working with Rome Will Burn is that they have a focus on strong melodies which I don’t hear enough of with EDM type groups.”
The unique combination of Manifesto’s electric violin and electronic beats combined with Suede’s melodic songwriting and commanding vocals caught the interest of iconic music producer Randy Jackson – who guided the star duo in crafting great songs during the recording process for their debut album.
Rome Will Burn’s self-titled Debut EP is slated to be released worldwide October 20th, 2015 on Blue Mask Records - sister label to Pocket Kid Records (the home of rock act, Dead Sara). But don’t mistake Alyssa Suede’s big eyes for wide. Despite her youth, this rising star is far from green, having performed for the better part of a decade in the small but venerated venues that launched a laundry list of household names, including Katy Perry, Mumford and Sons, Adele, and Lana Del Rey. They paid their dues, and so too did Suede, playing hometown Los Angeles venues like The Echo, The Viper Room, Hotel Café, as well as all over NYC (including Sidewalk Café where her brother used to perform when he was starting out) -- not to mention everywhere in between... Sundance, SXSW, The Bluebird Café in Nashville.
Already professionally trained in figure skating, dancing, and musical theater, Suede was ideally positioned to work with choreographer Tony Michaels who helped take the band’s performance to the next level. It was after attending one of their early shows that Michaels expressed a desire to work with the band. The result? Rome Will Burn has developed a truly spellbinding show. Michaels, who has worked with artists such as Beyonce, NSYNC, and J. Lo, was impressed, calling Rome Will Burn, “one of the most innovative, mystical duos I’ve ever worked with.”
All told, Suede is equally captivating on recordings and in live performance. The EP sizzles with her powerful vocals and quirky vocal styling that draws comparisons to Ellie Goulding. Theatrically her performances rival Lady Gaga, as is apparent in RWB’s de-but video, CHAMELEON, produced, directed & edited by Gavin Michael Booth, director of The Scarehouse film (Universal) and the man behind music videos for such acts as Third Eye Blind and The Afters. The video can be seen on Vevo and Youtube.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, October 13, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The electronic pop duo, Rome Will Burn, explode on the screen with more than just a dash of theatricality in their debut music video, CHAMELEON. Recently signed with Blue Mask Records, RWB emerges as talent to be reckoned with in this dynamic video produced, directed & edited by Gavin Michael Booth, director of The Scarehouse film (Universal) and is the man behind music videos for such acts as Third Eye Blind, The Afters and Our Lady Peace to name a few.
The song was produced by David Campbell, father of both Alyssa Suede and her brother Beck, who won the Grammy in 2015 for Album of the Year.
Chameleon, like its namesake, changes colors in a passionate duel between lovers. Lyrics, melody, beats and choreography interweave to tell this story of passion bordering on hate. Electric violinist Manifesto taunts and challenges his sensual, feisty partner Alyssa Suede, with dizzying intensity. While she in turn cajoles, caresses, and dares to fight back with fury. Their battle relentlessly builds to an emotional explosion resolving only when truth is laid bare.
The director captures the story by continuously circling the duo with one camera magnifying the raw performance with stark lighting that creates a haunting visual effect.
Booth says of his experience with the duo, "Working with Rome Will Burn was a great experience. They are willing to present themselves in wild style and approach music video making with a ferocious energy that matches the song's driving rhythm.”

Rome Will Burn is an electro-pop duo. The L.A. based band consists of DJ, electric violinist, Manifesto and singer/guitarist, Alyssa Suede. The duo signed a five-album deal with the new label, Blue Mask Records - sister label to Interact TV's Pocket Kid Records (the home of rock act, Dead Sara).

Rome Will Burn's live performances delight audiences with theatricality, giving fans a fresh take on electronica. With the guidance of Randy Jackson, RWB recorded their debut EP with producer/arranger David Campbell. David is father to both Alyssa Suede and Beck, and does arrangements for both of their albums. Alyssa Suede and Manifesto bring multiple talents and diversity to the group. As a child, Alyssa trained in ballet and figure skating winning trophies and titles with Olympic coach, John Nicks. Manifesto spent his youth studying classical violin and gaining an international presence performing for audiences around the world. Later, Alyssa studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London but ultimately decided to pursue music. She learned guitar and kicked off her career with a series of impressive musical accomplishments as a singer-songwriter, performing at SXSW and Sundance. “She may be the sister of Beck, but Alyssa more sounds like a mix of Jewel and Alanis Morrissette.”- Rock-is-Life. Her music videos, Falling From Mars and Hollow (3D), won awards at International film festivals including Best Song at the Hollywood Film Festival and Canada’s “Rising Star Award.”
Manifesto left the classical world to test the waters as a Trance/ Progressive/ Electro/ Tech House DJ. There he swiftly captured the underground scene with his charisma and versatile blend of European and American influenced electronic violin. From there he expanded into producing original music and delivering cutting edge mashups. In 2006, his first single, “Shaken, Not Stirred” took airways by storm. He went on to collaborate with Seal, Benny Benassi, Nick Terranova, Paul Mendez, DJ FEEL, Bobina, Paul Van Dyk and Nadia Ali.
Rome Will Burn's debut EP is scheduled to be released on Blue Mask Records on October 20th, 2015 worldwide. “We are very pleased to extend our brand into the pop arena, and we couldn't get a better start than with talent like Rome Will Burn,” said Robert Bryan, President of Interact-TV. “Their act is original. Their EP is killer. And performing live, Rome Will Burn lights a fire that has the audience jumping up and down and singing along on every song."
"Expansion into the pop genre", continued Robert, "is a giant leap forward for our music division. Alyssa's father, David, and brother, Beck, are both icons of the music industry. We expect Alyssa and Manifesto to follow in their steps and garner awards for themselves and our label.”

David's arrangements have helped to sell nearly a billion albums that garnered over 142 hit singles, 82 Grammy nominations, 42 Grammy awards and 2 Oscars.
“He never does stuff that’s ordinary. He always takes the records I do up to a higher level.”— Rob Cavallo LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- To anyone in the music industry, a gold album is a benchmark; an accolade and a rare feat. A sign that, after all the hard work you’re finally somebody. Most artists don’t take such a thing lightly, as last year not even 50 albums went gold. But to arranger/composer David Campbell, a gold, platinum or even double-platinum album, clearly is not a laurel to rest upon.
He’s arranged over 600 of them.
If you’ve lived on planet earth for at least 24 hours, you’ve heard his arrangements. With a resume including collaborations with U2, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Adele, Lady Gaga, and scores of other household names, David has reached legendary status in his sphere. His vast portfolio includes hundreds of iconic albums and singles that Campbell has either played on or arranged over the past four decades: Carole King’sTapestry, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, Beck’s Sea Change, Green Day’s Time of Your Life, Lee Ann Womack’s I Hope You Dance, Dixie Chicks’ Not Ready to Make Nice, Adele’s 21, Taylor Swift’s Red, Train’s Drops of Jupiter, Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball and more.
Campbell has composed for film starting back in the ‘80s with All the Right Moves starring Tom Cruise and cult classic Night of the Comet. His many ar-rangements for songs and scores for the silver screen include: the Oscar-winning song “You’ll Be In My Heart” Tarzan, Dreamgirls, Rent, Oscar Winner Brokeback Mountain, and Oscar-Nominees Foxcatcher and August: Osage County. This summer he composed the score for the Colombian documentary Magia Salvaje which is now the highest grossing film in Colombian cinema history.
"He never does stuff that’s ordinary," said Rob Cavallo, who produced some of Campbell’s most iconic arrangements, including Goo Goo Dolls’ "Iris" and Morissette’s "Uninvited." "He always takes the records I do up to a higher level."
Further comprising Campbell’s prestigious list of accomplishments are his arrangements throughout Beck’s entire discography, including 2015 Grammy-Winning Album of the Year, Morning Phase. The unique bond experienced in their collaborations was forged from a very special connection: Beck is David’s son.
Of course you can’t say that everything is hereditary. But it certainly helps to grow up in a household rich with the love of music with a dad who arranges hits in the eclectic genres of: punk, R&B, rock, country and pop. It was in that environment that Beck planted his artistic roots, cultivated his musical gifts and named his direction, growing quickly into a tremendous talent selling over 16 million records worldwide.
But Beck is not the only child of David’s who has benefited from their father’s musical genius. Campbell writes songs with and is the arranger/producer for Beck’s younger sister Alyssa Suede and her band, Rome Will Burn.
"It’s fascinating how inspiring one’s own children can be when they’re such great artists and so enjoyable to work with. Because really, Beck was always showing me new ideas from an early age. And once Alyssa got into music, she had her own take on things. So, learning from your children is a big satisfaction."
He went on to sing praises for Rome Will Burn and their electro-pop ingenuity.
"One of the reasons I enjoy working with Rome Will Burn is that they have a focus on strong melodies which I don’t hear enough of with EDM type groups. So I think they’ll go mainstream because of that. And I think their stage presence and theatricality will influence other groups to add other elements to their music."
When a man has helped sell nearly a billion albums, arranged over 142 hit singles that garnered 82 Grammy nominations, 42 Grammy awards and 2 Oscars, you can pretty much predict the next big thing is likely to be one of his projects.
Watch Campbell’s midas touch continue with Rome Will Burn’s debut EP, slated to be released October 20th on Blue Mask Records - sister label to Pocket Kid Records (home of rock band, Dead Sara).

The Future of Electronica: Internationally Renowned DJ/Electric Violinist Manifesto Takes EDM Mainstream with Rome Will Burn
LOS ANGELES - (EINPresswire via NewMediaWire) - October 18, 2015 - Underground sensation Manifesto has always gone against the grain, challenging the expectations of both his audiences and his genre – to great effect. As a solo act, he has played over 1,500 live shows throughout the US, Europe, Asia, Russia, Canada and South America, becoming a fan favorite and a critical darling. Now, with his first duo project Rome Will Burn, he’s stepping into the spotlight and bringing his innovative vision to the mainstream EDM world of electro-pop.
Manifesto began learning the violin at the age of 5 and through a fateful turn of events, got his first DJ gig at only 11. He continued to do it and hasn’t had another job since. In the artist’s words,“It’s more like DJing chose me than the other way around.”
Combining his virtuosic, hypnotic command of the violin and years of experience behind a turntable, it’s not only Manifesto who believes DJing was his calling – critics agree.
“Manifesto is the thinking person’s DJ, mixing classical with electronica -- so for those that thought electronica is dead, no — it has evolved.” THE EXAMINER
"You’ll never see a performance like this.” FAMEONE
Rome Will Burn’s early stages began in 2010 when singer/songwriter Alyssa Suede attended one of Manifesto’s shows in Washington DC. Though this was the beginning of Manifesto’s first duo, he was no stranger to sharing the stage. After delivering some of the hottest mashups as well as original music -- his single “Shaken, Not Stirred” took the airways by storm in 2006. The multifaceted musical enthusiast went on to perform with the likes of Benny Benassi, Nick Terranova, DJ FEEL, Bobina, Johnathon Peters, Heavygrinder, Victor Calderone, Paul Van Dyk and Nadia Ali.
Manifesto discovered that he and Suede shared a love for electro-pop and wanted to push the boundaries of it while still keeping musical integrity. Furthermore, since both artists were trained in classical music, it was only natural that they would bring those elements into expertly crafted electronica. At that point he realized the duo’s potential to shape the future of mainstream music and he became dedicated to the project. And it didn’t take long for Rome Will Burn to catch fire... and attention.
First to come on board was Alyssa’s dad,composer/arranger David Campbell. Although his plate was already full working with major artists like his son Beck, St. Vincent, and Taylor Swift, Campbell was intrigued by the chemistry of the duo. “I knew it would be creatively stimulating to work with RWB’s modern beats and textures combined with more traditional melodic elements. I don’t hear enough of that with EDM type groups.”
Next they perfected their live performance style with the help of choreographer Tony Michaels, who has choreographed for Beyonce, NSYNC, and J. Lo, and began playing shows and getting rave reviews at L.A. venues including The Echo, The Viper Room, Dragonfly, and House of Blues.
Manifesto’s musicianship and performance experience helped speed the group towards their star high goals. The duo soon attracted the interest of iconic music producer Randy Jackson who was intrigued by the idea of electric violin and melodic songwriting mixed with the elements of electronica. Jackson proceeded to guide the rewrites and recording of the RWB songs. The product brought them a five album deal with Blue Mask Records -- sister label to Pocket Kid Records (the home of rock act, Dead Sara). Rome Will Burn’s self titled debut EP is slated for worldwide release on October 20th, 2015.
The chemistry Manifesto shares with Suede is captured both on recordings and live. His famed magnetism is showcased in RWB’s debut music video CHAMELEON produced, directed & edited by Gavin Michael Booth, the man behind music videos for such acts as Third Eye Blind and The Afters and director of The Scarehouse film (Universal).
As for what’s next, Manifesto put it best in his own words: “It’s time to bring music back to music.”

Rome Will Burn

Los Angeles, July 7, 2015 (Associated News)
When two artists converge from completely different musical backgrounds and styles, they alwaysPic1run the risk that their vision of “opposites-attract” musical matrimony will not play out as intended. Talent regardless, (because if talent were the only thing requisite for a successful collaboration, the world would still be talking about Metallica’s and Lou Reed’s Lulu) the success of any artistic partnership apparently depends upon finding and maintaining an optimum symmetry, regardless of different backgrounds, and building off one another to produce a common creation.
Based on the merits of speculation alone, I wouldn’t normally be eager to endorse a collaboration between a folksy singer/songwriter and a DJ known for his high-voltage electric violin performances. But it just so happens, in the case of Rome Will Burn, that prior genres defining their solo careers are completely irrelevant; pop is what both of them were destined to do, and they were destined to do it together.
I had the honor of getting a pre-release copy of Rome Will Burn’s soon to be released EP, and, without being overly familiar with the origins of this duo, I can’t imagine it took longer than a few seconds of playing with each other to realize they were a match made in heaven. Frontwoman/guitarist Alyssa Suede, who also happens to be Beck’s sister, carries whatever her counterpart Carlton Moody (AKA DJ Manifesto) throws at her, resulting in a number of essays into the sub-genres of electro-pop that, impressively, hit almost all the time.
Their first single off this EP, “Chameleon”, finds both of them in their most radio-friendly form (though it’s frankly a close competition) and sets the bar for Alyssa’s vocal diversity quite high. Throughout the song she transitions seamlessly from a honey-coated ire-fueled timbre to an almost spoken-word rhythmic pulse, adding dynamite and dynamics to the appropriate parts. Not to mention some nice word painting which further keeps things interesting (don’t think we didn’t notice you sped up the rhythm on the word “fast”, Ms. Suede). And sticking true to the intrinsic quality of pop music, the song picks an emotion and does it well: “I know it’s just human nature/But you had to go and f*** up again/I should just get up and leave ya/But I know you’re gonna pull me back in.” It’s a piece destined for both heavy airplay and for repeated listenings: a win/win.
Similar to “Chameleon”, we have “Live by the Beat” and “Waging Romance” presenting additional compelling arguments for RWB occupying the ionosphere. In “Beat”, Manifesto’s penchant for finding the “exact right sound” becomes very evident, as the variety he injects into this club-friendly thumper defines its accessibility beyond its shiny fist-pumping exterior and gives Alyssa a vehicle to carry this visceral tune. And though it’s always refreshing, Manifesto’s violin-playing on “Waging Romance” is downright brilliant. The intro plays out like The Piano Guys discovering a computer for the first time and eventually escalates into a virtuosic solo which should really be mandatory in every pop song ever from here on out.
Slowing it down a bit, we enter the realm of CHVRCHES-esque dream-pop with “These Three Words”. Alyssa, once again, doesn’t overreach lyrically but instead decides where she wants to go and arrives there strongly. In a way she’s like that perfect girl who can anomalously meet and surpass all the different descriptions for delineating a girl’s attractiveness: she’s proven to us she can be sugar-sweet adorable, smoking hot, and now all of the sudden she wants to be breathtakingly beautiful? Well she bites off a lot but it’s not more than she can chew. She handles the plodding, melodic ambience warranted by Manifesto’s adept arrangement of piano, strings, and sustained synths, expertly, giving us the impression that this is what she’s been doing her whole life.
There will always be room for pop on the charts, and in only their first release, Rome Will Burn seems to bring enough to the table to fit perfectly into the current electro-pop mould while still doing enough to shape it themselves. They still need to find their identity a bit, but that’s usually what the first EP is for–to see what works and what doesn’t. If their ambition, rapport and versatility persists at this rate, they will definitely be a band to watch out for in the very near future.

If you love David Guetta, Rihanna or Sia then you will love the music of guitarist/vocalist, Alyssa Suede, and Electric violinist/DJ, Carlton Moody (aka DJ Manifesto) of Rome Will Burn. And if you’ve never heard of them, well, you will very soon, because the electric energy of this duo is destined to light up the charts.phot02
I was privy to a preview of their soon-to-be-released EP, Rome Will Burn, and I can only say that if I heard one of these songs come on the radio, I wouldn’t be changing the channel.
Alyssa’s quirky pop vocals and catchy melodies combined with DJ Manifesto’s eclectic mixes, aggressive strings and driving beats won me over on the first cut, “Chameleon.” Biting off the lyrics with just the right amount of antagonism and angst, Alyssa pulled me right in: “Guess I like playing with danger ‘Til you go and change your colors again. Chameleon.”
Their ballad, “These Three Words”, is rich in lyrical poetry and universal appeal. Who hasn’t dreamed of being loved unconditionally?
“You picked me up
With a gentle hand
Like you knew I was made of glass
the meaning of true love they say
You only know it when it’s made to last”
On this one, the beauty of Alyssa’s innocent vocals are cradled in the warm colors of Carlton’s haunting violin lines.
It’s no wonder, Alyssa Suede has won five International Film Festival Awards in the Music Video Category, including awards for Best Song (Hollywood Film Festival) and Rising Star (Canada Film Festival). Her roots were planted young. From the time she was a child Alyssa had the advantage of singing with her mom, pop/rocker & vocal coach Raven Kane, and working on music with her arranger/producer dad, David Campbell, whose influences can be heard on over 600 gold and platinum records, including many of her brother Beck’s albums. (Yes, rock star Beck is her brother.)
Carlton, also started young. He discovered his love for the violin at age five. Years later he left the world of classical violin and found himself drawn to the world of electric violin and electronica music. Establishing himself as a DJ to be reckoned with, “DJ Manifesto” has toured the world adding his electric violin virtuosity to his DJ platform.
Lucky for us that these two musicians crossed paths and decided to combine their talents and came up with what is now Rome Will Burn. They live up to the title of their song: “We live by the Beat.”

Why on earth would an aggressive rollerblade competitor, together with a figure skater, who trained with an Olympic coach, make a trendy and meticulously creative, electro-pop duo? Well, he the rollerblader, is Carlton Moody aka Manifesto, international DJ, producer and violin virtuoso. She, the figure skater, is singer-songwriter, Alyssa Suede. Together they are known as “Rome Will Burn”, and they boldly state that, “Their experiences made extreme discipline and performing for large audiences the norm.” That and the fact that they broke a lot of bones, admits Suede.
Rome Will Burn has recently released their self-titled 6- track EP. This was the year of electro-pop disappointments. Many well-known bands failed miserably with their latest releases. I’m starting to notice a pattern wherein bands driven by electronic and synthesized sounds tend to hit the sophomore slump a lot harder than most bands. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that this synth and string (violin) gem, Rome Will Burn, is a debut.
The hidden gem here is obviously the lead single, “Chameleon”, which has 2 versions on the EP – ‘Clean’ and ‘Dirty’. Manifesto’s restrained synth bass and violin drives the song patiently along until about after the first chorus, and then it lashes out and surprises you in the same way that a roller-coaster does, but then it retreats gently back into its shell only to emerge with a heartbeat breakdown-build-up that requires you to dance. All the while Suede’s vocals shine, shimmer and soar through the verses and choruses. In fact, in thinking about it, that’s what they do so well. Rome Will Burn can take a good song and figure out exactly what delicate bridge of finesse they need to add to make it addictive – you go back and listen again for that bridge, even if you don’t realize that’s why you’re doing it.
Rome Will Burn is doing their best to stand out in a sea of electro-pop. And on their debut, they do in fact stand out in the best of ways. Accessible and fun yet with an underlying aggression and angst paired with strong beats, the uncannily appropriate violin sounds, and a full bodied vocal, Rome Will Burn has created a recording that many established pop stars don’t seem to be capable of making.
Lead vocalist Suede deserves much of the credit for the success of this EP. A lot of similar bands have girl vocals that are thin and whimsical, but Suede has a fuller sound, better range and an uncanny skill at building layers of drama and emotion through tiny tone changes. She can casually get away with quite dark lyrics at times and still have the music sound very danceable and light given her sweet clear tone.
Rome Will Burn’s lyrics have an intelligence and layer of complexity that is unusual, considering their candid clarity, “These Three Words” and “Waging Romance” are particularly engaging in this respect, besides being my favorite songs on the EP. Musically, this EP breaks new ground, with the superb introduction of the violin and when playing the EP through; the songs do stand out from each other which I find is the most common problem with synth based music. The music is also refreshingly straightforward and yet, with Alyssa Suede’s vocals, it has the ability to stomp out major anthems for intense highs. “Live By The Beat” is mind numbingly catchy with a chorus that’s going to wreak havoc with your subconscious. “Body Language” has an almost movie score quality to it while being suitably shiny and bright.
Rome Will Burn explodes natural high energy with an infectious enthusiasm. They are musically brilliant, while this EP just entices and draws you in. You just can’t help yourself but to follow. And listen or dance! - Review Indie
In this review, I’m delving into a rather compelling outfit, Rome Will Burn. The dynamic duo’s self-titled EP dropped last month in an effort to redefine electronic pop with intriguing new musical notions and themes. Do the eclectic performers do an apt job flipping a genre around? Well, surprisingly, yes, they do. Let’s dig into ‘Rome Will Burn.’
‘Chameleon,’ the opening of the EP, also acts as the definitive ‘single’ highlight of the collection. This dance-infused piece is remarkably well produced. It’s worth noting that when I review a piece, I actually go to the studio and queue the material up on monitors; I’m not sipping a coffee at Starbucks with Apple earbuds in. I mention that because Rome Will Burn is an absolute treat on a quality sound system. The incredible production of ‘Chameleon’ takes danceable pop to an entirely new level, utilizing immensely fascinating vocal layering, harmonies, string sections, and tight, superb beats.
Alyssa Suede and Manifesto, the moniker of Carlton Moody, make up Rome Will Burn with a partnership that was, as Suede says, ‘written in the stars.’ Suede’s vocal presence on the EP is authoritatively beautiful. She commands listener attention, accented wonderfully by an experimental soundscape. The ballad ‘These Three Words’ exhibits the duo as masterful interpreters of familiar content. There isn’t anything new about the subject matter of the song; it’s even a bit stereotypical. The way the two tackle it, however, breathes fresh energy into what would otherwise be a forgettable ballad.
As I briefly touched on, Rome Will Burn does a pretty solid job of effectively redesigning the pop electronic dance landscape. The classical influence is definitely a huge part of that – there are some string sections in this pieces that stand out because they aren’t synthesized. Some modern acts feel too comfortable to take on string sections from behind a Korg keyboard. The authenticity of the strings on Rome Will Burn is noticeably agreeable with their persona. ‘Waging Romance’ has nuances of that throughout, a song that actually takes those romantic tropes and revitalizes them further.
In addition to some classical vibes and heavy electronic pop influence, there are tinges of house and dub throughout ‘Rome Will Burn,’ though not to a significant extent. The duo’s wall of sound seems to explode, or rather, ‘drop’ at certain times. ‘Live By The Beat,’ a wholehearted dance tune if there ever was one, definitely embraces that on the latter half of the track. For what it endeavors to do, ‘Live By The Beat’ succeeds through every avenue.
The EP technically ends with ‘Body Language,’ one of the more complex pieces of the collection. The instrumentation is some of the best, utilizing some innovative production techniques and musical styles akin to funk. Actually, I’d argue it’s the epitome of a modern funk track since it incorporates so many contemporary pop and electronic styles so effectively. The final piece of the effort is ‘Chameleon,’ a clean version of the already-stellar track.
Check out ‘Rome Will Burn.’ They’re great and are actually reworking their niche in a way that feels effective and consistently compelling. It’s fun music with a surprising amount of depth, especially instrumentally. It’s some of the best indie pop music of 2015. - ASSOCIATEDNEWS.US

Bio
Rome Will Burn is the brainchild of Alyssa Suede and Manifesto. The duo came together to form a band in 2013 combining Alyssa’s singer/songwriter background with Manifesto’s DJing and Gypsy violin playing. Rome Will Burn live performances delight audiences with theatricality, giving fans a fresh take on electronica. With the guidance of Randy Jackson, RWB recorded their debut EP with producer/arranger David Campbell. David is father to both Alyssa Suede and Beck, and does arrangements for both of their albums. Beck’s last album “Morning Phase” won Grammy Album of the year in 2015.
Alyssa Suede and Manifesto bring multiple talents and diversity to the group. As a child Alyssa trained in ballet and figure skating winning trophies and titles with Olympic coach, John Nicks. Manifesto spent his youth studying classical violin and gaining an international presence performing for audiences around the world.
Later, Alyssa studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London but ultimately decided to pursue music. She learned guitar and kicked off her career with a series of impressive musical accomplishments as a singer-songwriter, performing at SXSW and Sundance.“She may be the sister of Beck, but Alyssa more sounds like a mix of Jewel and Alanis Morrissette.”- Rock-is-Life.
