Nothing like a good comeback story – and it doesn’t get much better than Detroit’s own Minister Kaine. The Michigan native found the deck stacked against him early on – selling drugs and living a life that was tough to escape – gangs, violence, nothing sunny or glamorous about it. Kaine recalls his difficult past – “In my neck of the woods drugs was the only way to get out. I mean some people sell drugs to be apart of the crowd, but in my situation I sold them as a way to provide for myself.” Honestly, success stories like Kaine are far too rare – this guy rose from the depths – and now today he can hear his songs on every other MTV show out there, from Cribs to Laguna Beach.
And the present and future is beyond promising for Kaine as he releases his fourth album, "The Dead Hood Scrolls". Listen to the man talk about it – “This album came about a concept I had; you know how they found the famous Dead Sea scrolls and it contained precise words and gems and jewels for Christianity? So in turn, the album gives you just a little of the gems. The second serious will pull it out. ‘The Dead Hood Scrolls’ gives you a happy, kind of serious side, but ‘The Dead Hood Scrolls Second Tablet’ will reveal, kind of like the bible, the Old Testament is concealed the New Testament is revealed.”
If you’re going to buy a record, you gotta check this one out – the material is damn good enough, but you can’t go wrong with a story like Kaine’s. He’ll continue to make music, and do what he can to make the world around him better and better. Read on for the answers to the XXQ’s.
XXQs: Minister Kaine
PensEyeView.com (PEV): Born outside of Detroit, Michigan, you found yourself at an early age using and selling drugs, and even involved in street gangs. What made you want to escape this life and pursue a musical career? As well, how hard was it to do this?
Minister Kaine (MK): Well in my neck of the woods drugs was the only way to get out. I mean some people sell drugs to be apart of the crowd, but in my situation I sold them as a way to provide for myself; and Ice T was making music about what I was doing. I always loved music and here was my way in. Plus I know drug dealing doesn’t have a retirement plan, it wasn’t easy. I started off just writing and then I gradually got serious.
PEV: Is there a certain kind of environment you have to be in to write music or does it just happen?
MK: All the things I’ve been through gave me my songs. Sometimes I get writers block, but I mean pain is the best motivation.
PEV: You’ve enjoyed several significant film and television placements, including the television shows MTV CRIBS, Laguna Beach and My Super Sweet Sixteen. Also, your song, "Motel Kali," was released on the "Painting Shadow's" soundtrack also featuring G-Unit's Young Buck and Atlanta's Pastor Troy. What is it like to see (and hear) your music being a played on such popular shows and other media outlets?
MK: Make’s me kind of wonder why I haven’t achieved the backing. But I say, in time its good. But my focus is touching lives. Real talk. It lets me know that if given the chance I could be just as successful.
PEV: With that, what can fans expect from a live Minister Kaine show?
MK: Up close and personal. I like to talk to my crowd and take them to my world. You are here with me until the lights go out. The smoke represents the hell and the lights represent the little sunshine that comes through, but in a nutshell, you get me up close and personal.
PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?
MK: They came to check you out, give them something to chew on. Make them want to research you and maybe do something so another soul doesn’t go through what I did.
PEV: Tell us about your fourth album, "The Dead Hood Scrolls". What can fans expect from this album?
MK: Well this album came about a concept I had; you know how they found the famous dead sea scrolls and it contained precise words and gems and jewels for Christianity? So in turn, the album gives you just a little of the gems. The second serious will pull it out. “The Dead Hood Scrolls” gives you a happy, kind of serious side, but “The Dead Hood Scrolls Second Tablet” will reveal, kind of like the bible, the old testament is concealed the new testament is revealed.
PEV: How is this album different than the previous albums you released?
MK: I gave them something they never heard from me. I’m always at the hammer. I hit topic after topic, subject after subject. I relaxed a little and used different beats.
PEV: You sing and write without using profanity in any of your rhymes. Do you feel that this is something all artists should be doing? What made you take this very admirable route?
MK: I feel like all artists have their own form of expression. You can’t put tape on their mouth. If they feel the need to curse, hey, I’m not against it. To me, you can reach more people by not using it; but hey, sometimes I want to just go at it… excuse me.
PEV: How would you describe the sound of Minister Kaine? And what do you think it is about your style that makes you stand out?
MK: My sound is very different. I like melodies and I have very strict standards for my vocals. It’s very important that my words come out exactly how I want them. That’s the sound. Believe me!!!
PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about Minister Kaine?
MK: I guess since you asked. . . . I listen to soft rock to go to sleep. Real talk!
PEV: Your bio reads that “A turning point in MK's life was when the manager of "Tribe Called Quest" advised him to further pursue a career in music…” which is a huge honor but was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you?
MK: Yes, when I was 5 yrs. old my dad brought a Mickey Mouse guitar home for me. He played a little; and my grandfather played piano. So I knew I had the bug. But I heard someone say ‘the more you suffer the more your musical talents will surface’. And also, Micheal Jackson got me!
PEV: What one word best describes Minister Kaine?
MK: Patience
PEV: How is life on the road for you now and how has it changed since you first started out in the business? Best and worst parts?
MK: Life on the road is just that. Hotels, studios, etc. I mean really nothing has changed much.
PEV: Is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?
MK: California and NYC
PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?
MK: Well really, all my life I’ve been doing this. So it’s like ‘oh you still at it huh?’ Man I haven’t played at home in about ten years or so. Sounds exciting, but home is deep. Period!
PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?
MK: Sitting back, smiling a little. You know little stuff like that. Love ya Tee!
PEV: Name one present and past artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?
MK: Kanye West because he isn’t afraid to go against the grain. Also, Donny Hathaway because he is a musical genius.
PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?
MK: Not to be a ham but, me! lol!
PEV: If you weren’t involved with music, what would you most likely be doing for a career?
MK: Something big in Washington D.C.
PEV: So, what is next for you?
MK: Music, music and more music. Politics and pastoring aren’t beneath me either! I want to leave this place a little better than I found it. I want to really get my voice in the wind so I can help.

EDMOND — Minister Kaine, a local rap artist, recently released his fourth album, “The Dead Hood Scrolls.”
“This one I did to get in touch with what’s going on right now,” Minister Kaine said. “It might set a couple people free in the mind.”
The album has eight tracks and a hidden track, and will be followed by a sequel, “The Dead Hood Scrolls: Chapter 2.”
The title of his album is based on the historical Dead Sea Scrolls. According to the Library of Congress Web site (www.loc.gov) the scrolls were found in 1947 and are dated from third century B.C.E. to 68 C.E. They are older than any other surviving manuscripts of the Hebrew Scriptures by almost 1,000 years.
Kaine said the scrolls, much like his album, were tiny jewels that showed people how to make it in this world.
“There are jewels for everyone in this album to get in and make it,” he said.
Kaine said the country’s current economic issues have boosted a greater need to make money any way possible. That is one of the issues he addresses in “Real Out Here,” a track he recorded with rapper “The Game.”
“It’s about not taking what’s going on right now lightly. People are cutthroat right now. I’ve been in the underworld, as some would say, and I know what’s going on. It’s real from the White House to your house,” Kaine said.
Kaine grew up in Flint, Michigan, which is a city three times the size of Edmond and at one time had the highest rates for drugs and murders. His nickname used to be Cocaine.
“When I changed my life and stopped using profanity, I dropped the ‘co’ and added ‘minister’ to show the good and the bad,” he said.
Kaine writes music based on his life experiences while staying true to his personal beliefs.
Brian Heard, a manager for MK Musik, said Minister Kaine’s music is unique because it has an upbeat message.
“A lot of rap has gone to the negative or uses foul language,” Heard said. “You don’t have to be negative to be successful. It’s kind of his life philosophy.”
“The Dead Sea Scrolls” is available at Oklahoma music retail stores or can be purchased at CD Baby or perspectivemusic.biz.
Minister Kaine, along with Bone Thugs n’ Harmony, will perform in Tulsa Sept. 26-27.

I Like Dat!
Profanity is the easy way out for this rapper- that’s why he prefers not to use it. This Flint Michigan Hip- Hop artist decided to turn to spirituality and add “Minister” next to his hustler name “Kaine”. Minister Kaine was using & selling drugs at an early age, he even participated in gang activities, but one day things changed. He was advised by the manager of “Tribe Called Quest” to pursue music- and he did just that.
This energetic performer has traveled through the East &West Coast with other artist such as The Ghetto Boys, Scarface, 8Ball & MJG, A Tribe Called Quest, McEhit, and the Late Great Tupac Shakur; he has also enjoyed television placements on MTV’s Laguna Beach, My Super Sweet 16, and MTV Cribs. MK has released his fourth album “The Dead Hood Scrolls” which include Real Out Here (featuring a verse from The Game) and my personal favorite Shawty Like That. This is an Official Club Banger! It’s one of those songs you can drop it low too and have fun with. The hook is very catchy, and this rapper has a wicked (meaning GREAT) lyrical flow- no wonder it’s rapidly getting air play around the country.
Now, if you see me riding around Florida & my car is vibrating, just know I have Shawy Like That on heavy rotation. I’m usually not a big fan of something like this- most rap artist use degrading and disgusting words towards women- this song has none of that. The song does contain adult content but don’t worry, there are no “F Bombs”, the horrid “B word”, or Sugar Honey Ice Tea’s here. So Enjoy!
Peace and Blessings

Bio
Born outside of Detroit, in Flint, Michigan, Minister Kaine (MK) found himself at an early age using, selling drugs, and involving himself in street gangs. He feared he would never escape the grim reality of his hood.
His deep desire to free himself of that environment led him to expressing his pains and struggles through his music and lyrics.
A turning point in MK's life was when the manager of "Tribe Called Quest" advised him to further pursue a career in music. But MK knew he would need more than himself to turn his life around, so he turned to spirituality. He added "Minister" in front of his street hustler name, "Kaine" to represent the dual nature of men.
MK delivers an intelligent and street savvy reflection on the often flawed world we live in, without using profanity in any of his lyrics. MK thinks profanity is the easy way out for a lyricist.
MK's music is Ghetto Street savvy, non profane, and socially aware with a commercially viable delivery.
