Who are some of your favorite songwriters?
I love all kinds of music. I just talked about Marcus Hummon. James Slater’s another one I love, Victoria Shaw, Gary Burr, people that are just amazing. I love Chuck Cannon, I think he’s awesome, Dallas Davidson, there’s just so many. On the younger side of things, Sam Brooker and Audrey Spillman are two favorite up-and-comers from the younger generation of folks who are just doing amazing things. There’s a young girl named Madeleine Slate who is from Canada, and she’s been in town a year or so, she’s definitely one to watch. She is amazing. We’re in this town, with such amazing songwriters, but those are probably some of my favorites. - American Songwriter Magazine

I'm a big believer in being in the right place at the right time. While I certainly don't put all of my hope in destiny alone, I think that working hard and putting yourself out there get you so far, and at some point, a higher force steps in. I think many songwriters/artists can relate to this.
So, I was at a craft fair last week (I run a little semi-side business selling my crocheted goods) and started chatting to a nice family who was visiting from Toronto. Now, you know I love Canada and Canadians, so of course I jumped into a lengthy conversation with these lovely new friends. Turns out, the daughter, Madeleine, was in town to play the Bluebird and upon advice from Miss Janis Ian, was searching for a copy of Performing Songwriter Magazine. So when I told them where I worked, we were all pretty amazed by the various fates that joined us that day. Madeleine and her family stopped by the office a couple of days later to treat the staff to a mini-concert, and I was blown away by this young singer-songwriter. Now, I don't expect this chance encounter to be some big career-changing thing for Madeleine. But if my writing this makes a few more people check out her music, that's something in itself. As you musicians know, there are a lot of baby steps involved in getting somewhere, and each one helps. Miss Slate is already garnering plenty of attention back home, and building quite the reputation as a songwriter. I'm just another person who happened to hear her.

Bio
Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Madeleine Slate has been writing and performing since her first effort to play chords on a guitar at age 17. Her obsession-turned-trade led her to relocate to Nashville where she flourished. She continued to ardently pursue her craft, cultivating friendships and creative relationships, including one with her mentor and friend, noted songwriter Tony Arata (who penned Garth Brooks’ iconic mega-hit “The Dance”). Her efforts eventually resulted in signing a publishing deal and landing her the first major label cut, “That’s How I’ll Remember You,” which was included on UMG artist David Nail’s "Sound of a Million Dreams" Album. Her second major label cut "Sweet Love" can be found on Billy Currington's current album "Summer Forever".
Madeleine released her first EP "Fine Lines" in 2013 and music from that can be heard in ABC Family's "Switched at Birth". Her music has definitely found a friend in the film/tv world and can be heard in the background of numerous other television shows and movies such as Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas, "Hart of Dixie", "The Client List", among others.
The grand prize winner of the Belfast Nashville Songwriting competition, she has performed alongside Roseanne Cash, JD Souther, (American Idol Winner) Kris Allen, as well as many other Nashville and world renowned artists.
In the spirit of many great artists with the same philosophy preceding her, she is always careful to focus on the task at hand rather than the fruit that it may bear. As she humbly states, “I have this beautiful quote hanging near my front door so I see it every day on my way to go write or play shows. It says, ‘This above all, to thy own self be true.’ I do my best to stand by that everyday."
