"Alphabeat VS Kind of girl: But if you're after a Danish band that can bust some serious pop-ass, get yourself a ticket to a Kind Of Girl gig"

Every time iTunes asks me if I "wish to import the CD: ALPHABEAT into my library" there's some kind of voodoo spiritual force holding my hand back, stopping me from clicking "yes". I'm like Indiana Jones staring into the eyes of the Crystal Skull - paralyzed by doom.

So what are the commitment issues here? These Danes are fresh of face! Clean of tooth! Sixth sense of pop! Surely I can just... y'know, hang five with Alphabeat?

"They're like bunny rabbits with synthesizers - and it's too damn easy to forgive the bastards when they're boring. "

Here's the conundrum: should I like something because it's great, or because it reminds me of something that's great? It's a pretty big question, especially since every time I get a rush off this record, I get an weird flashback simultaneously.

Alot of people that'll dig Alphabeat will be too young to remember the first time. But even I'm too young for the ELO, and I can still see that 'What Is Happening' clones their hits with the precision of a cunning art-thief.

Regardless, only a Nazi would damn Alphabeat. Their innocent eyes practically twinkle at you through the 3D drums, punchy production and Jason Donavan vocals. They're like bunny rabbits with synthesizers - and it's too damn easy to forgive the bastards when they're boring.

And let's not forget there are some fine moments here: '10,000 Nights' digs out summer melodies like a sniffer dog, while 'Rubber Boots' feels like a glittery comedown from an all night festival.

Ultimately though, the sense of a band having fun in the studio is more enjoyable than the actual tunes, and hell- maybe that's a recommendation after all. But if you're after a Danish band that can bust some serious pop-ass, get yourself a ticket to a Kind Of Girl gig.

"UK album review: refreshingly acute cuteness about this dinky babe as it slickly wraps itself lovingly around your listening space whilst craftily unpicking the locks to your defences"

Kind of Girl - Lonely in a modern way there’s a refreshingly acute cuteness about this dinky babe as it slickly wraps itself lovingly around your listening space whilst craftily unpicking the locks to your defences. Slave to your charms is a prime sliced teaser cut culled from the Copenhagen based quartets debut full length Lonely in a modern way due to hit the racks any day now. This cutie sounds like its been birthed as a result of many a night wiled away exploring the pop perfection of yesteryears electro pop pioneers New Musik, subtly cast with a euro pop buzz and framed with an overtly effervescent honey tipped synth pop demeanour this lightly sprinkled love noted nugget is deliciously crafted with a irresistible sugar laced pop persona that’s as probably at home paying reverential nods to the likes of Salon Boris as they are to the Cardigans and Dollar. www.myspace.com/kindofgirldk

"9 out of 10 stars"

Our Rating: (9 out of 10 stars)

We only recently reviewed a copy of this band's stunning single Slave To Your Charms. Well the forthcoming album Lonely In A Modern Way seems to have caught this reviewer's ear as well...

As we raved previously, Slave To Your Charms is a fantastic album opener that somehow gets the blood pumping and chills you out at the same time.

While the album in general might not quite match the standard of the opener, you can be assured that when there is a slight lull, the band are right back on top of things come the next track. Someone You Replaced is a beautiful example of KOG's ability to flirt with the acoustic and the electronic; a very sad song in it's entirety that works amazingly well.

By the time that album closer Poetry Boy comes around, the rousing opening riff ploughs through to, again, a touching chorus. Kind of Girl prove on this album that they are masters of emotive pop.

"Review (USA) of Poetry Boy: Not only does the song linger forever in your mind, it also delves into the body itself; this song feels and plays like a radio hit"

Kind of Girl "Poetry Boy"

Contagious in pensive delivery and striking in character, is the beautiful voice of Kind of Girls vocalist and guitarist Sissel. Jokingly, she refers to herself as the Queen of Fairy Tale People, but in her wistful delivery of this unforgettable pop couplet "Poetry Boy," you are transported in spirit to another place. It might as well be a fairy tale land, though the nymphs and satyrs really have their amps cranked.

As the vocal floats on the border of fantasy and reality, just out of earthly grasp, an airy mind etching guitar hook compliments a muscular bass and drum combination that could pull a freight train. Not only does the song linger forever in your mind, it also delves into the body itself; this song feels and plays like a radio hit.

As if a potent force of nature, Kind of Girls "Poetry Boy" is like the eye of a storm, calm at the center but surrounded by a swirl of emotion.

"We've totally fallen for the band's love forlorn lyrics and Sissel's wonderful voice"

Our Kind Of Girl

Kind Of Girl are an interesting new Pop/Rock/Indie band from Denmark and the latest lifeiscarbon® favorites. The Copenhagen based band comprises of Sissel Olander (Vocals and Guitar), Rune Buhr (Bass), Joel Gjærsbøl (Guitar) and Emile Carlsen (Drums).

The band claims to draw inspiration from a wide range of artists such as the Cardigans, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Aimee Mann, and Garbage but during their heavier moments they remind us of our favorites, the much missed Cocteau Twins. We've totally fallen for the band's love forlorn lyrics and Sissel's wonderful voice.

The band are currently hugely popular on last.fm and have been in the top 40 of their Most Downloaded Music Chart for weeks, with more than 18,300 downloads. In fact, with no official website set up yet, the only places to find out more information about the band at the moment are last.fm and MySpace. The good news is that Kind of Girl plan to release their debut album during the coming Spring and rumors point to a date sometime in March.

In the meantime, take a listen to Slave To Your Charms and Poetry Boy by Kind Of Girl.

"UK album review: kind of girl deliver with their brightly catchy songs with typical Scandinavian drive and relish, infectious and vibrant electro-pop of the highest order"

Kind Of Girl

CD - Lonely In A Modern Way

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Makes It Hard To Love You' @ 'CD quality'

Kind Of Girl are a three-piece (plus 1?) from Copenhagen and bring with them infectious and vibrant electro-pop of the highest order. This aint over-synthed, multi-digitised or excessively computer driven pop, this is stylishly crafted singalongapop that uses a bit of programming mixed in with the more conventional guitars, bass and keys.

Vocalist Sissel uses her sharp but sexy intonations to transport the Kind Of Girl message from within the precise and well structured instrumental backdrop. The Kind of Girl music machine is one that specialises in the sweet and harmonious rather than full-on rock-block and angular; Kind Of Girl fuse and dilute rock with pop and deliver their brightly catchy songs with typical Scandinavian drive and relish. Precision seems to be a particular strong point within the whole Kind Of Girl pop ethos; Kind Of Girl have mixed and produced this album with massive attention to detail such that every subtle nuance can be clearly heard and felt.

'Lonely In A Modern Way' is primarily a sensitive and laid back album especially when played at respectfully low volume. But, the 'beast' takes on a whole new personality if you really up the ante and give it some db's. 'Lonely In A Modern Way' is a flexible and moody work that you can either chill out to or get down and manic with - nothing gets lost at either end of the volume spectrum - all is beautifully balanced and well proportioned. There are ten pretty cute tracks to get into here which run out at a succinct thirty-five minutes - ten typically curt pop jottings that get the job done quickly and don't hang around long enough to become irksome.

'Lonely In A Modern Way' by Kind Of Girl is hard to find fault with; the whole album has been lovingly set out and beautifully presented with an eye steadfastly on the commercial aspects. Definitely sitting at the softer end of pop-rock, this is inoffensive, maturely created, thoughtful pop music rather than a bucket load of blatant banality - Kind Of Girl have quite obviously put their hearts and souls into its creation and their nurturing and coddling have paid big dividends.

"Live review/London: (kind of girl) will make you feel more alive than a pair of crocodile clips on your ghoulies...Potent and genuinely moving, they'll shiver your timbers if you happen to catch them next time they return to England"

Working the door of an unsigned music venue is not for pussies. Nomatter how tough you are, after 6 months all the bands will bleed into one long, Norwich based, amateur metal group. You can be the biggest music geek on earth - it doesn't matter. Soon you'll be chattering like a monkey and gnawing at the windows with your teeth.

Luckily, once in a while you'll also see a band that blows your brains out - and tonight I'm out in Soho, hot on the trail of two such examples. These groups are The A-Team. The penetrators of apathy. The best of the best! The justifiers of all hype in the world ever! Including mine!

KIND OF GIRL are fronted by a small girl that looks like Velma from Scooby Doo - that's right, the brown haired one that wears glasses. Her name is Sissel, and her Copenhagen based group will make you feel more alive than a pair of crocodile clips on your ghoulies.

The band start off with a few enjoyable (if unnecessary) Europop songs, then evolve into a frankly stunning display of erotic synth-rock. 'The More I Love You' is a tragic love song that blossoms like a poison flower. 'I Meet You' is a vulnerable and confessional, while 'Poetry Boy' has a deathly cinematic outro to die for.

Potent and genuinely moving, they'll shiver your timbers if you happen to catch them next time they return to England (which, according to their myspace is... er... TBA. God damnitt!)

Bio

Copenhagen's Kind of Girl specialise in bass heavy synth-pop doused in the sweet addictive vocal melodies of lead singer Sissel. Lonely in A Modern Way marks the debut album from a band bursting with ideas on combining rock, electro and atmospheric elements to write addictive and inspiring pop songs.

The album's opener Slave To Your Charms is a great introduction to just this. The initially sparse vocals glide over a backdrop of shockwave-bass lines and moody synthesizers before erupting into the chorus's stirring lament of love. Equally Meet You sees the band dip their toes further into the electronic end of the spectrum and crosses Bloc Party riffing with a beautiful string lead chorus, chiming keys and clockwork beats.

On the EP 'Petit fours' 2009, they clearly demonstrate musical curage moving on to more organic means, from the James Bond like theme 'It's deadly' to the almost cabaret sounding 'Version of me'.

Towards the 2010 2nd full album release they seem to have moved into strong character and taken the electro towards the cutting edge of todays sound.

Having embraced the new world the manager is a working member of the band taking care of new directions and web strategy. And having set up their own record company trak2r records and managing their numerous sub publishers through trak2r publishing they are extremely flexible, and ready to move in new directions within hours. Keeping most doors open for the perfect deal to arrive.
