"Jimmy & the sounds"

Four-piece Middlebrough band Jimmy and the Sounds release their stunning new single ‘Heart for Rent’. The band describes their sound as music to fall in love to yet for me it’s more music to fall in love with.

Once the vocals kick in on the title track, it soon comes to me that these are a slightly more mature version of OK GO although even if they are more grown-up, the aim of creating a lively and fun pop-rock track which you can cheesily bop along to is not abandoned in any way. James’ vocals bring the track to life as they boast real power and depth unlike some bands where the vocals can become lost in a fuzzy clash of guitar.

The equally as catchy b-side is ‘Capital’ which is clearly reminiscent of the likes of Cage the Elephant and somehow holds a more serious note than the previous track which could be due to the heavy bass rhythm that keeps the song consistent and provides a good backbone to the track.

"Heart for Rent"

There are a plethora of guitar-driven bands in the market place right now, but what keeps this Middlesbrough 4-piece's head above the musical parapet is confidence. This is personified 2 minutes 9 seconds into their new single 'Heart for Rent' when they have the balls to insert 2 seconds of silence which helps to give the last third of the track an enhanced driving finale.

That's not to say what comes before doesn't hold a great deal to savour; swaggering vocals and punchy playing (I particularly liked the disciplined and thoughtful drumming) combine to remind me of a latter day Big Country. B Side 'Capital' proves that this isn't a one off

"heart for rent"

Indie pop has never felt as alive as it does with 'Heart For Rent', the new single from Middlesborough four piece Jimmy and the Sounds.

There are passionate vocals by James and Anthony, who also provide the single's guitar hooks. Alistair joins these two musicians on drums and Marc on bass. The band creates upbeat indie pop to bop to, written with plenty of emotion and projected vocally in much the same way - heartfelt, emotive and honest. It sounds like heart and soul has definitely been placed into every aspect each of the tracks on this release, the single 'Heart For Rent' and the accompanying tune 'Capital'.

Jimmy and the Sounds have been performing together since 2009 and have made some bonds that come through in their music, an understanding of what each track requires. These guys have a hit on their hands with their new single.

"live @ fiddlers elbow, camden"

Camden is one of those areas in London, where no matter where you turn, there is a venue for live music. It is becoming increasingly trendy and attracts some of the biggest names in music. The Fiddler’s Elbow would, from their advertising, have you believe that it too, is one of the prestigious spots but it is a little off the beaten track and has the distinct feel of a spit and sawdust back street pub. Saying that, I won’t deny that they do, by foul means or fair, draw in some really talented, breakthrough artists.

Jimmy & The Sounds are one such act. A four-piece band from Middlesborough. Their set at the Fiddler’s was the last date on their European tour. They kicked off their set with ‘Adventure’, an ultra-catchy, toe-tapping song which was a good way to whet the audience’s appetite. From the outset, it was obvious that these guys love what they do. There is camaraderie in their performance, which continued on through ’10,000 Times’, ‘Capital’ and ‘Speak’.

Continuing with ‘The Light’ and ‘Pleasure in Colour’, both further demonstrating just how intense the band are when performing. The next song was my favourite from the night – ‘Little Victories’ – a sound that, to me, defines Indie Rock and I could imagine thousands of people adoring at a festival.

‘Carried Away’ and ‘Sounds’ took them neatly to the final song of the night, which also happened to be their brand new single, ‘Heart For Rent’. Ending their set in the same way it started – catchy, energetic and fresh.

Jimmy & The Sounds have a certain je ne sais quoi. They look the part without being manufactured, they sound the part without being pretentious and they could carry the standard for Indie Rock with pride. Yet in a world where any artist that doesn’t truly fit a genre is unceremoniously labelled Indie, they have, quite unfairly, got to fight their way through the crowd. I would like to think they have the drive and belief to do just that and hope that in the coming months, I will be hearing a lot more of Jimmy & The Sounds - wohomusic

"heart for rent"

Our Rating:
‘Heart For Rent’; the latest release from indie-pop foursome Jimmy And The Sounds’, is another typically punchy and hook laden affair. Sounding a little like The Gaslight Anthe meets Jimmy Eat World, (and very much like The Futureheads ); it’s radio-friendly number, with its passionate vocals and catchy sing back chorus. The band describe their material as “music to fall in love to” and whilst ‘Heart For Rent’ won’t permeate my stony heart – their statement still retains some validity. Brimming with a vibrant youthfulness – you could imagine the older kids dancing (and snogging) to this track at a school disco – this generation’s possible equivalent to a ‘Wheatus’ or ‘Alien Ant Farm’ single. Whether Jimmy And The Sounds can make a similar impact on today’s adolescence, as the aforementioned bands did on mine, is debatable though and the fault does not lie with their music. Both ‘Heart For Rent’ and the B-Side ‘Capital’ are tight, catchy and performed with impressive composure – unfortunately in a world full of indie-pop guitar bands – these Middlesbrough natives may never receive the exposure their efforts deserve.

Jimmy and the Sounds - 'Heart for Rent'

There are two check shirts in the promo photo and there's a grit to this North East band's alt. rock that suggests The Gaslight Anthem but the harmonies are pure Futureheads - themusicfix.co.uk

"Jimmy and the Sounds"

I love this kind of punchy indie-rock with its heartfelt vocals and driving beat. The guitars are what their sound is all about with no pretension or BS and they have the same kind of swing as Gaslight Anthem and harmonies courtesy of James & Anthony and belting drums from Alistair.
The ‘B’ side ‘Capital’ is a real piece of Jam homage and they really do it very well mixing the Weller style wide-boy vocals with ringing Indie guitars.

They have been working hard, supporting a whole slew of major names, and they sound as though they could be a big pull in their own right in the next little while.

"Jimmy and the Sounds.................Single: Heart For Rent"

“Heart for Rent”, with it’s passionate vocals and epic choruses, is the new single from Middlesbrough band Jimmy and the Sounds.

They play heartfelt, hook laden songs to dance to, sing along to and they describe their tracks as

“Music to fall in love to”.

Their sound is that of a radio airplay dream with razor sharp indie-pop sounds that live, catch their audiences in a euphoric state with their hook laden and catchy sing back choruses all performed with a strong belief and a spring in their step!

Together with their matter of factness North East attitude, they have an enviable ability of writing indie pop hits that provoke emotion and the band believe solely in living in that musical moment.

Consisting of James and Anthony on vocals and guitar, Alistair on drums and Marc on bass, the 4 piece have been performing together since 2009, travelling across the UK playing at respected venues such as 02 Academy, Newcastle, supporting Frankie and The Heartstrings, Reverend and the Makers and also playing at numerous UK festivals including supporting Maximo Park at Spear Live and British Sea Power and Mercury Rev at Stockton Riverside Festival 2010.

Having already garnered support and airplay from BBC6 Music Introducing Tom Robinson, Huw Stephens “Sounds cute! Reminds me of Scouting For Girls…however they aren’t half as cheesy”, Zane Lowe “This sounds sweet, I like his voice and there is a place for this music” and a BBC Tees Introducing live session with their radio friendly and mainstream sounds.

“If you’re into the kind of wistful, defiant rock n roll anthems written by the likes of The Gaslight Anthem only with a distinctively North Eastern twist then you should check (them) out.”

The Generator Magazine

“This Middlesbrough quartet are on the up and up and it’s easy to see why their radio-friendly indie/pop appeals. They have a fervour which reminds me of early James and the kind of sing-a-long chorus which is meaty, big and bouncy. Smashing stuff”

The Crack Magazine

“Jimmy and the Sounds mix both the styling of Gaslight’s Tom driven sparse verses with passionate vocals breaking into epic catchy choruses giving me immediate nostalgia of when I got Jimmy Eat World’s first album. It’s a great energetic track”

"Jimmy and The sounds 'heart for rent'"

Jimmy and the Sounds are a four piece from Tesside, England, consisting of Alistair Henderson, James Renwick, Anthony Sawdon and Marc Straughan. Their single Heart for Rent is an incredible pop song. The singers voice soars over the verses and gets a chance to shine in the middle when you hear only bass. This single will have everybody up dancing and singing along.

Although Jimmy and the Sounds is a new band 'Heart for Rent' shows that they have a staying power in this industry. The band has many other songs up on their Facebook page, which I suggest people check out as well.

Another band that I have been meaning to see for a while. And now that I have seen them I wished I had done it a lot sooner as I’ve obviously missed a lot of great gigs. I discovered afterwards that they used to be called The Cutters. Now I own a demo by this band and really liked it. Often wondered what happened to them. Well now I know. Jimmy and the Sounds aim for their audience to have a good time and they certainly made this happen. Short, sharp tunes got a hefty crowd into the real festival spirit. They also set about getting everyone on their side by giving out free t-shirts. Now the lead singer may be able to sing and play guitar. At the same time. But he cannot throw for toffee. His application to join any netball team in the near future is sure to meet with refusal. They are starting to gain some notice of the bigwigs down in the smoke. Catch their sing-a-long anthems while you still can. - the northern line

Introducing: Jimmy & The Sounds

Jimmy & The Sounds are playing on Saturday 31 July
In the run-up to the Stockton Fringe Festival we will be previewing some of the local talent due to play.
BBC Tees' favourites Jimmy & The Sounds will be plying their poppy trade on the Saturday, taking to the stage at 1500 GMT.
The band see themselves playing Glastonbury in the future, and are looking forward to The Fringe.
We've given them eight chances to convince you to check them out...
How would you describe your band sound in three words?
'Smile, Don't Worry'
Fill in the gaps: If you like………………….. then you will like us.
Staying out late in the Summer.
What is the band setup and what equipment do you use?
We are a four piece with bass, drums, two guitars and three vocals.
We use Fender and Schecter guitars, Orange amps and Shine drums.
What does playing the Fringe festival mean to you?
It means a lot to all of us, as well as the fact that it's a massive privilege to be given the opportunity, it's also one of the best local festivals around.
Every year the atmosphere has been excellent and this year the line-up is arguably one of the best yet.
It kind of encapsulates summer for us, spending time with friends, hanging out and laughing.
Who else do you want to see at the festival?
As well as all the local acts, bands like British Sea Power and Mercury Rev are definitely going to be good.
I know this year there is another stage at the Georgian Theatre as well which will be worth a visit - it's the first year for this stage so I'm sure they'll put on something impressive!
As well as the music I can't wait to see Reginald D. Hunter, last years comedy stage was good but this year is going to be something else.
What's the best gig you have played together?
It's hard to tell!
We played the O2 Academy in Newcastle a while back and that was awesome, but since then we've supported some great acts and in a couple of weeks we are off to play a festival in Germany.
Ask us again in a few months.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
Each other!
All our songs come from hanging out together, sometimes at practice, sometimes not.
The best influences come from things that happen on the road.
We've been on tour recently and nothing influences you more than a six hour journey to the capital and back. Jimmy & The Sounds are a gang, not a band!
Where do you see yourselves in five years time?
Hopefully making more and more music!
Maybe with an album under our belts and a pet flamingo or two but still playing with the same fulfilment we do now.
Oh and headlining Glastonbury obviously!

I like the fact that in the photo Jimmy and the Sounds look like they mean business, but not Apprentice-style, back-stabbing, cash-is-king, kind of business. There’s a hint of a smile dancing around their chops and the business they mean is the type that likes to give something back to the community:<!--[endif]-->
in this case, melodic indie rock which has been liberally sprinkled with hundreds and thousands shaved from a slab of pure passion. And they’ve got a singer who can really sing. Not in a showy, Mariah Carey warble-fest kind of way; but he can certainly hold a tune. And the tunes he holds are hook laden and contain enough going on in them to pique the most jaded of interests. They’ve already supported Super Furry Animals and have featured on Tom Robinson’s Fresh On The Net BBC Radio 6 and the future looks pretty bright for Jimmy (and his Sounds). DP

"sounds"

Jimmy & The Sounds are a Middlesbrough based 4-piece band, their music a radio airplay dream of razor sharp indie pop. Sounds, released on April 26th 2010, is a perfect introduction to the band, beat & hook laden with a catchy sing back chorus. The chorus can only be sang back by the audience in a loud euphoric state, thus catching you in a musical moment where nothing else matters and you don't care who's looking or listening- (Cue chorus : "This is not a disco, its only music, only music that we move to"!).

Only a year ago the lads met by chance in a (not so very rock n roll location) Boro café and bonded over a mutual love of life, art, music (and tea & cakes!) Their music marries the matter of factness of North-East band counterparts such as Maximo Park & Field Music, but this band stand out as having an enviable knack of writing chart friendly indie pop hits!

Live wise J&TS provoke emotion with their music and believe solely in living in that musical moment. B-side: The Light is a moving, vocal soaring, melody laden track and if you're not stirred by this you may as well be dead. They have a headline Spring tour in place, including a single launch in store at RPM and are set to play some key North-East summer festivals, all of this along with support slots with Frankie & The Heartstrings and Reverend & The Makers in their home town. This band has certainly got a very noticeable spring in their step.

Jimmy & The Sounds have already been introduced by Tom Robinson on 6 music for their quirky indie pop sounds and have played a radio session/interview for BBC introducing at BBC Radio Tees, Click Teeside and NE1 FM. Press support comes from Narc, The Crack, Gen, The Link, Toonwaves & Musos Guide, Alter The Press, Gig Junkie, Shout 4 Music and this is only the beginning……

"Jimmy & The Sounds throught to next stage - Calling all remixers!"

Jimmy & The Sounds new single ‘Sounds’ was selected to receive the remix treatment and have a video made by visitors to Generator’s website.

Sound & Vision is a project to team emerging artists, remixers and film makers to collaborate and produce a track with a remix and video.

Around 93 emerging North East acts submitted tracks for Sound & Vision and the entries were whittled down to just six including Mammal Club, Viva City, Hellfire Club, France & the Habsburgs and Nadine Shah.

Visitors to the site chose ‘Sounds’ as the track to be remixed after an internet campaign led by the band secured more than 50% of the vote. ‘Sounds’ by Teesside band Jimmy & The Sounds will be released as a single on April 28 on New Blood records.

Jimmy & The Sounds - Sounds
Released on April 26th on New Blood
Words by Sean Reid

Middlesbrough's Jimmy and The Sounds show off a radio-friendly indie sound with its catchy chorus albeit a simple one; "This is not a disco, its only music, only music we move to". Nevertheless its basic tempo and overall approach is somehow favourable.

Whilst b-side 'The Light' shows the band have more depth, with strings adding an extra element the final impression you're left is one that sounds like a cross between Snow Patrol, Scouting For Girls and Editors.

The Gen – April online Issue
Jimmy and the Sounds announce new single and tour
Teesside based four piece Jimmy and the Sounds recently announced the release of a new single and UK tour.
The band, who featured as part of Generator’s SPEAR:LIVE shows in 2009, subsequently gaining airplay on Tom Robinson’s ‘Introducing’ show on 6Music, will release ‘Sounds’ on April 27th. The tour is already in full swing, including several shows around the North East.
If you’re into the kind of wistful, defiant rock n roll anthems written by the likes of The Gaslight Anthem only with a distinctly North Eastern twist then you should check out their new single

"Sounds- single reviews"

The Crack – April issue
Jimmy & The Sounds
Sounds (New Blood)
This Middlesbrough quartet are on the up and up and it’s easy to see why their radio-friendly indie/pop appeals. They have a fervour which reminds me of early James and the kind of sing-a-long chorus which is meaty, big and bouncy. Smashing stuff. JL
