‘Sultry’ is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Hey Tiger. Lead vocalist Christina Alessi has a singing voice for which phone-sex companies would pay handsomely…or so we heard. There is brawn behind the beauty, though, as the band bench-presses a solid rhythm section with well-oiled twin-guitar biceps. This full-length debut flaunts an amazing talent in vocalist Christina Alessi. Emerging out of Springsteen's Jersey, this band delivers a hard-as-nails fistful of rock ‘n roll, made pliable by a sizzling vocal heat. Obvious comparisons to Etheridge and Nancy Wilson aside, Alessi emotes, with an agile prowess, the vocal strut of a soulful pop diva like Roison Murphy or Joss Stone. The melodies are predictable, but full of tried-and-true rock ballads and choruses that build with intensity to climax in a sweaty fervor. Taking a break from all that weird 'n' wacky stuff, what we have here is a more conventional, but still quite solid and melodic pop-rock album. Sure, it isn't remotely strange or off the wall - and that's not a bad thing at all. It's actually a very nice offering, real smart, catchy, absorbing and above all beautifully harmonic. Christina Alessi's lovely, husky, seductively smoky voice casts a strong and intoxicating sonic spell while the gorgeously fluid basslines, crunchy guitars, and sturdy drums keep the music itself on a highly satisfying and sonorous path throughout. Kudos as well to the touchingly thoughtful and reflective lyrics. All in all, this one sizes up as a definitely worthwhile and up-to-snuff album. - Joe Wawyrzniak

Maxwells in Hoboken has a great new band playing there this Saturday the 17th. They are called Hey Tiger and though I was at first not quite sold on their name, their CD turned me right around. Hey Tiger are fronted by singer Christina Alessi whose voice is smooth, soulful yet at times, very in your face. A great mix of vocal styles to say the least and while some of the band's songs are straightforward, softer rock, it's when they get more atmospheric and trippy on tunes like "Friend" and "Elizabeth" that they really shine. Being that Hey Tiger calls Hoboken, New Jersey home which is only a stone's throw away from the heart of Manhattan you may wonder given the title if this is an album about the tragedy some four years ago on September 11th. That tragedy may live somewhere deep inside the emotionally wrought lead singer Christina Alessi's soul but this is no political album. Her songs deal with heartbreak and aching romance told with a commanding voice this side of Natalie Merchant. Great songwriting and a tremendous ability to write one helluva addictive hook—“I Don't Mind” has hit single written all over it. - J-Sin - Smother Magazine
