"On According to Red bandleader Evan Uhlmann lyrics weave a playful and somewhat ironic story, a strong signifier of the bandï storytelling style. Guitarist Will Vitale bursts of notes punctuate the tale and melt into Uhlmann's acoustic picking. The smooth vocal chorus and the desperate delivery of several verses, let alone the literal meaning of the lyrics, contribute to the songs roller coaster of love (no, not like the Ohio Players) feeling. Meek & the Marksmen are spending the rest of the fall recording a full-length album and playing colleges around the New York area." -Spin (Ian Kessler) 2009

Evan Uhlmann and his band make smart pop for these hard times. Catchy, classy, and addictively melodic, Uhlmann's rapidly maturing songwriting style sprinkles an unabiding love of the Beatles with the questions and yearnings of a wide-eyed, 21st-century hipster. Keep it tuned right here, kids." - Peter Aaron Music editor, Chronogram magazine Contributor, Roll magazine

At this big table is another New York band. Meek and The Marksmen are from Red Hook, but they tour all over the Northeast and have even ventured to Chicago a time or two. These guys have been around for a couple of years, but they didn’t finalize their lineup until last year. The current musicians come not only from New York, but also from Boston and San Francisco. Led by Meek (Evan Uhlmann) who handles vocals, rhythm guitar, and songwriting duties, the band is producing pop/rock that could cross over into Americana because of the strong storytelling style. They have a creative bassist, Dan Vernam, who keeps the band in the pocket but also can embellish around the melody line. Will Vitale’s lead electric guitar creates color and punches up the instrumentals. Zach Seman’s piano and Evan Garcia-Renart’s drums round out their sound. Meek and The Marksmen released its first EP in July of this year and have been in the studio working on a full-length album. - Skope

New York City’s Meek And The Marksmen banded together behind songwriter/leader Evan Uhlman while at Bard College in New York City. With a flair for quirky songwriting with a pop flair and a tight performance style, Meek And The Marksmen have made a name for themselves from their live gigs and opening spots for acts such as Gym Class Heroes. Meek And The Marksmen’s debut EP, According To Red, was released in 2009.
According To Red opens with "Juliet", a story-song about a girl who is unhappy with her life and runs away to the big city, only to find that she loves the boy she left behind. "Juliet" is an incredibly tuneful and catchy piece of folk/rock; a fantastic bit of songwriting. "According To Red" keeps the same folk/rock sheen but with a funk backbone; it's a highly entertaining song that may get a bit muddled in the story-telling but is nonetheless fun to listen to. "Jesus" keeps a blues/funk base underneath that drives the song in spite of a murky story line. Things pick up a bit with "Wading River"; a mellow-yet-rhythmic tune about someone who spent time institutionalized who is suddenly turned out to the streets. The song is a study in the struggle for identity and meaning and is very well written. According To Red closes with "Tough Broad", a catchy little love song that qualifies as non-traditional. The song is a lot of fun and is delivered in a low-key fashion that's almost humorous.
Meek And The Marksmen display a proclivity for Low-Fi folk/rock on According To Red [EP], an entertaining and accessible recording that should appeal to current acoustic rock fans as well as those of earlier generations looking for new bands with sounds rooted in yesteryear. The Garage/DIY sensibility of According To Red may not sit well with some, but Meek And The Marksmen write, play and sing quite well together. Make sure to check them out.

Evan Uhlmann has a knack for creating fun pop songs, complete with cheeky lyrics and a catchy melody. It's the type of songs you won't mind playing even if you aren't big on pop music at all.
Born in Chicago, Uhlmann now calls New York City his home. While studying in Wales, he was under the tutelage of Ray Davies, among the founding members of the British band, The Kinks.
Just last year in September, he released his first debut record and called it, Blue Lipstick. Combining pop with acoustic indie rock guitar work, the record contains songs that are playful and with good composition.
Uhlmann can easily go from cheeky pop to Bob Dylan-esque acoustic numbers in an instant. There's no denying that he has versatility which helps add to the album's obvious charm.
Blue Lipstick opens with a decidedly Beatles-sounding, Here I Come. The song is fast and rushes on through with an upbeat retro sound that allows it to pass as a vintage vinyl track from a long forgotten pop band. On the other hand, the title track chronicles someone who has to wear a sort of mask and a "blue lipstick" in order to please people. It's a bit serious underneath it all but the song is sung in a lighthearted vibe making you want to smile and laugh as you hum along.
Other tracks worth noting include Strawberry Wine, Melanie and Unfaithful Bird. Although really, it's easy to enjoy all of the tracks on this album. It's a feel-good compilation that serves as great company whether played on your iPod, car or home system.
Evan Uhlmann is a musician worth checking out if you come across his gigs in the NYC area. He's been making the rounds in local clubs such as "Mercury Lounge" and "The Bowery Poetry Club" to name a few. For the meantime, you can also grab this album download over at BandCamp. - Valerie From Frostclick.com
