EP OF THE WEEK
SONPSILO CIRCUS
Sonpsilo Circus
MGM
On Sonpsilo Circus' debut EP, the local lads have shaken off the identical similarities of Hendrix and Zeppelin that were placed on their early shows. Weaving their tunes into a more original sound with all the hooks and gusto they began with, Gower's sustained guitar and McDonald's thumping bass have been combined in unison for one of Perth's best musical partnerships. Start-stop riffage, extending harmonies and the underlying feeling of shroom-tripping flashbacks and a jam room of solid vintage psych. An EP like this will hopefully see them work their way up to the big tent of festivals very soon

If it's true that there's nothing new left to do in music, then new bands better make sure they re-do old styles really damn well. These guys do.

First band up, Sonpsilo Circus with their authentic sounding psychedelic rock provided a treat that had you wondering wether perhaps someone had slipped you some acid on your way in. The three-piece band engaged the already semi-full room with their 60’s inspired style of rock with signs of Indian influences and mantric melodies. Their music took us back in time and space and you’d be forgiven for looking around expecting to see Jimi Hendrix, staring intensely at the lights and carpet, somewhere near to you. The band gave 110% with sweat dripping from all of them by the end. Vocalist/guitarist Peter Gower (Young Revelry) is a mini-Hendrix in many ways – but these guys hold their own unique style with confidence.

However the best performance of the night was definitely Sonpsilo Circus; they rocked so hard they blew a fuse that turned off all the electricity running into Mojo’s Bar. With guitarist Peter Leveson-Gower, curling into his guitar like a protective mother, bassist Ben McDonald played riffs so sexy, they weren’t wearing any clothes. Rocking out like outback heroes, the band played that classic progressive rock that the 60’s are so famous for, and the audience loved it. They gathered from all corners of the bar to experience the best rollercoaster you could ride on solid ground. The only downside? Guitarist, Leveson-Gower, should have taken a much more prominent position on stage to flaunt his heavenly guitar skills.

“The seeds of sublime psychedelic wonders lie within…”

Roll up, roll up, Sonpsilo Circus (that’s sun-sigh-low) formed late on the calendar of 2009, by friends Ben McDonald (bass), Pete Leveson-Gower (guitar/vocals) and Jamie Turner (drums) the three piece musical trapeze act soon set about sending jaws dropping and minds spinning with their effortlessly astounding psych rock. In mid 2011 Mitch McDonald usually seen up front for The Love Junkies took over drum duties and the line-up was solidified.
Channelling sounds from when rock was young and electrifying, the ‘Circus offer “meandering wah-flickers and Stratocaster screeches […] twirling bass licks and relentless but ever morphing drum lines.” (Cool Perth Nights). Tempered with mantric Eastern flavours and unstoppable pop hooks, their live shows are at once buzzing dance parties, song-driven wig outs and flurries of kaleidoscopic improvisation.
Leveson-Gower (previously of Young Revelry and garage/powerpop band the Upton Pilots) has been called a “mini-Hendrix” (X-Press Magazine) and Ben McDonald (Hunting Huxley/Sugarpuss) “plays bass lines so sexy, they don’t wear any clothes.” (Spaceship News). Sonpsilo Circus have forged a distinctive sound that’s earned them an avid local following, and plenty of accolades – including 1st place in the 2010’s Jack Daniels ‘Mojo Rising’ Competition and Runner-up in the prestigious Next Big Thing Competition the same year.
The band’s first release ‘Your Mother Built The Sky’ (launched on the 30th of April this year) was received extremely well locally receiving “Single Of The Week” in Drum Media Magazine, spins and very positive reviews from national radio station Triple J, including “Spotlight Artist of the week” on the Triple J unearthed website, and also a spot at the main stage of the WAMi (Western Australian Music Industry) Saturday Spectacular Festival alongside bands such as The Panda Band, Emperors, Wolves and The Novocaines.
In August and September 2011 Sonpsilo Circus launched their debut self-titled EP (available through MGM Distribution) to a packed show at Mojo’s in Fremantle and a sold out show at The Bird in Northbridge. The EP received “EP Of The Week” in Drum Media and was local feature on RTRFM. The tracks “Silverspoon”, “Your Mother Built The Sky” and “See Her Run” have all received airplay on JJJ, with Silverspoon played on Triple J’s Super Request with Rosie Beaton, spun by Richard Kingsmill, and also put on rotation. In December the band headed off on their debut Eastern States tour and have just kicked off 2012 with Festival appearances at Southbound and The Big Day Out in Perth as well as 3 nominations in the WAMi awards in which they won the "Most Promising New Act" category. They are currently working on their debut album.
