"It Ain't Black Box Theater But 22Leroy Will Do Just Fine For This Week's Review"

Although we should be doing Black Box Theater NYC today, we caught 22Leroy in the East Village Monday night at Fontana’s Bar with Wes Shippee on keyboard/lead vocals and we just had to share the experience with you. 22Leroy self-describes their genre as Rock-Pop-Alternative and we agree, adding only very cool and rocking the clean cut.

While our assessment of "clean cut" could be the death of many bands playing bars in the Village, their high energy and high-spirited style was surprisingly refreshing. You could actually feel safe letting your seventeen-year-old daughter see the show; I know this for a fact since my kid came along with me to check them out.

Not to be misleading; I must say the women over 21 did all they could to deflower the group’s innocence with alcohol-induced shouts of "I love you" and "take your shirt off," but they held their composure and simply let the music answer the fans' request.

I could write volumes about this really cool band, but I won’t waste the copy and let you see for yourselves. Click here to download the performance. Click here to view at our movie channel.

BTW, you are going to see a lot more of Wes Shippee here at RetroVision Media in the coming months, as he is part of a documentary we are doing on RadioTheatre.

Bio

Presenting: From the Dirty South to the damp cobble stones of the West Village after dark, 22Leroy: A Nice Bunch of Guys.

22Leroy slings a brand of sloppy pop that drips vocal harmony and dishes out tasty riffs. They’re like Modest Mouse without the drinking problem—or Counting Crows with a drinking problem, depending on how you look at it.

Fronted by keyboardist/vocalist Wes Shippee, 22Leroy features Matt Everett on rhythm guitar and Johnny Green on lead guitar, with bassist Chris Cona and Tim Kuhl on drums rounding out the rhythm section. While Wes serves as the primary musical composer, the whole band contributes to the lyric-writing process, and each member brings their own unique signature to recordings and performances. Live, well, they melt faces. You probably wouldn’t have expected that from the dulcet sounds that come out of your speakers, but it’s true. Women love them, men want to be them, dorks comment, “Hey, these guys get great tone.”
